Introduction

Chronological Index
INTRODUCTION This guide describes collections documenting the history of education in the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections (LLMVC) at LSU. It includes the papers of education officials; college deans; university presidents; professors; principals; teachers; and students. It also contains some records of defunct universities, colleges, and schools. There are a number of collections containing records of teachers' associations and student clubs and organizations. Records of Louisiana State University, which are part of the LSU University Archives, and the papers of LSU faculty, students, and alumni, are not described in this guide unless they also relate to education apart from LSU. A separate guide to the papers of LSU faculty, students, and alumni is forthcoming. Many University Archives records are described in the University Archives section of the Special Collections web site. The guide contains school notebooks of elementary and university students; term papers and theses; diplomas; and materials on medical and legal education. There is also information about public, private, and parochial schools; higher education; and school integration. Most of the collections are from Louisiana, but there are also materials from other parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley.

Brooksburg Cemetery
Section 36 Township 4 North, Range 11 East
Milton Township, Jefferson County, Indiana by Robert W. Scott
This cemetery is located on the Manville-Brooksburg road, just north of the main section of Brooksburg. This cemetery belongs to the Brooksburg Methodist Church, which was founded in 1891. It was probably a Bondurant family cemetery originally because there were 15 marked graves of Bondurants, all preceding the church’s founding. There are no other burials for other families before the church’s founding. The DAR shows Josephine Keel as dying in 1871, but I have not found this stone and the date may be an error. The same applies to Anna Gale, also listed by the DAR as dying in 1871. Before 1891, many Brooksburg area residents were buried at the Joyce Cemetery, just over two miles up-stream on the Indian Kentuck, or in the cemetery of the Morris Chapel M.E. Church, just upstream near the Ohio River. This transcription includes all transcriptions done by the John Paul Chapter DAR. The most recent death date in the DAR record is 1931. I have combined the many military inscriptions, which often were on separate stones, with the tombstone of the respective soldier. Any corrections are welcome as I had rain which caused difficult in reading some notes later. Completed September 15, 2002

A Brand New Reading
This is an updated reading of the Poland Cemetery located on NY Rt. 28 (Main Street) in the Village of Poland adjacent to and behind the Poland Community Baptist Church. The previous reading, usually ascribed to George Hildebrandt, appears to have been done in the late 1920's as the most recent burial recorded therein is that of Emily S. McVoy in 1928. The oldest burial that can be ascertained from reading the gravestones is that of Lydia Newman in 1810. The cemetery continues to be active with burials taking place up to and throughout this summer. This reading should not be construed as a replacement for the earlier one but as an accompaniment. Some of the stones read by Mr. Hildebrandt are not longer decipherable and his reading is the only information available. In other cases we disagree on the interpretation of spellings and dates on hard to read stones. Whenever I noticed a discrepancy I've tried to go back to the cemetery to check my reading. Probably the most notable difference is the surname RIZON (Mr. Hildebrandt's reading) vs. RIXON (my reading). After rechecking my notes and returning to the actual gravesite I can verify that the spelling on the stones is RIXON. Also, in many cases Mr. Hildebrandt recorded just the year of birth and death even though the day and month are noted on the gravestone. I've added this bit of information to my reading. I've also included additional information recorded on the stones as noted; i.e. spouse, veteran information, etc.
