The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Author Info: Washington Irving
Here's another one of those stories that I always thought I knew fairly well, but only because I remember the Classic Cartoon version that WWOR-TV in New York used to show after school. So I'd mistakenly recalled it as simply a scary story with Ichabod Crane facing the evil Headless Horsemanan amusing enough tale and quite scary, but little more than a ghost story. What a sheer delight then to return to the story in my dotage and find that it is much more densely textured, richly nuanced and truly funny than I'd ever realized. In fact, you can make a pretty good case for the idea that our understanding of the story is completely backwardsthat Ichabod Crane is the villain of the piece, the Headless Horseman the hero. The story is, of course, set in Irving's favorite milieu in Knickerbocker New York among the old Dutch settlers: From the listless repose of the place, and the peculiar character of its inhabitants, who are
descendants from the original Dutch settlers, this sequestered glen has long been known by the name

Early America: A Search for Freedom Washington Irving (1783-1859) John D. Anderson
Washington Irving was among the first generation born in the newly created United States of America. The year of his birth1783was also the year England officially recognized our new nation, ending the American Revolution. Irving was heir to the legacy of freedom won by the heroes of the war for American independence, a legacy that marked Irving's contemporaries as the first "lost" generation. With George Washington as their larger-than-life Founding Father, Irving's generation was unsure how to live up to his standard of achievement. Irving eventually earned the title of the "Father of American Literature," but his journey to that goal was fraught with anxiety. His was a search for freedom from not political oppression, but from the uncertainty of what to do with the freedom won by the founding fathers; his was a search for identity. This search consisted of three distinct phases. In the first phase, lasting until he was 33 years old, Irving's wealthy and indulgent family allowed him to drift casually through life. Irving, the youngest of eight children, was clearly the pet of the family. His father, William Irving, was a well-to-do merchant in New York City, a self-made Scotsman who had emigrated to America in 1763. An imaginative but sickly child, Irving was eventually groomed as a lawyer, but his real education took place on a grand tour of Europe in 1804-1806, in lieu of attending Columbia College as had his two older brothers, William and Peter. His adventures abroad included being attacked by pirates while en route to Sicily.

American writer, the first American author to achieve international renown, who created the fictional characters Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane. The critical acceptance and enduring popularity of Irving's tales involving these characters proved the effectiveness of the short story as an American literary form.
From 1826 until 1829 Irving was a member of the staff of the United States legation in Madrid. During this period and after his return to England, he wrote several historical works, the most popular of which was the History of Christopher Columbus (1828). Another well-known work of this period was The Alhambra (1832), a series of sketches and stories based on Irving's residence in 1829 in an ancient Moorish palace at Granada, Spain. In 1832, after an absence that lasted 17 years, he returned to the United States, where he was welcomed as a figure of international importance. Over the next few years Irving traveled to the American West and wrote several books using the West as their setting. These works include A Tour on the Prairies (1835), Astoria (1836), and The Adventures of Captain Bonneville, U.S.A. (1837).
Irving's other works include Bracebridge Hall (1822), Tales of a Traveller (1824), A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada (1829), Oliver Goldsmith (1849), and Life of Washington (5 volumes, 1855-1859).

Washington Irving's English Christmas An American essayist penned one of the best descriptions of the 19th-century British Christmas traditions, and in so doing helped restore many of these then-dying customs on both sides of the Atlantic. By James Munson Among the customs Englishmen took with them as they founded colonies throughout the world, the celebration of Christmas was one of the most important. It is ironic that one of the best descriptions we have of a traditional English Christmas comes from the pen of the American writer, Washington Irving (1783-1859). In his Sketch Book, which began serial publication in 1819, the young author included five essays on the English and their Christmas: There is nothing in England that exercises a more delightful spell over my imagination than the lingering of the holiday customs and rural games of former times…. Of all the old festivals, that of Christmas awakens the strongest and most heartfelt associations.

Rip Van Winkle, a Posthumous Writing of Diedrich Knickerbocker
by Irving Washington Summary In this classic American tale, a hen-pecked Rip Van Winkle wanders off with his dog Wolf into the Catskill mountains for some peace and quiet only to discover a group of strange characters playing nine-pins and drinking a even stranger brew. Despite warnings not to imbibe the drink, Rip sneaks a taste and falls into a deep sleep. Upon waking Rip discovers Wolf has wandered off and thinks someone has played a prank on him when he finds a rusted out weapon at his side instead of his own rifle. Wandering back into the village Rip Van Winkle is shocked to realize he no longer recognizes anyone and that things seem unfamiliar. Suspicions are arosed that Rip may be a Tory spy loyal to the crown since his knowledge of current affairs and politics is sadly lacking. He manages to establish his identity after being recognized by both his daughter and Peter Vanderdonk , the most ancient inhabitant of the village. Still incredulous of Rip's explanation for his twenty-year absence, the villagers allow Rip to return home with his daughter and live in peace. Analysis The term "Rip Van Winkle" has come to mean someone who is oblivious to social change. That is to say someone who is stuck in his or her own time and have not kept up with the times, intentionally or not. Washington's
