In the Strand Street in London town Something quite nice for half a crown Butin the dark what comes amiss? Except bad breath and syphilis. Catherine J. Hamilton, Women Writers: Their Works and Ways First Series (1892), Second Series (1893). The women writers in the First Series were: Frances Burney (1752-1840); Mrs Inchbald (1753-1821); Madame de Stael (1766-1817); Mrs Barbauld (1743-1825); Hannah More (1745-1833); Lady Anne Barbard (1750-1825); Joanna Baillie (1762-1851); Lady Nairn (1766-1845); Mrs Radcliffe (1764-1823); Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849); Amelie Opie (1769-1853); Jane Austen (1775-1817); Lady Morgan (Sydney Owenson (1783-1859); Susan Edmonstone Ferrier (1782-1854); Mary Russell Mitford (1787-1855); the Countess of Blessington (1790-1849). In the Second Series, the writers were: Mrs [Felicia] Hemans (1793-1835); Mrs [Anna] Jameson (1794-1860); Frederika Bremer (1801-1865); Harriet Martineau (1802-1876); Letitia Elizabeth Landon (Mrs MacLean) (1802-1838); Honourable Mrs. Norton (Lady Stirling-Maxwell) (1808-1877); Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1809-1861); Mrs [Elizabeth] Gaskell (1810-1865); Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855); George Eliot (Mary Ann Cross) (!819-1880); Adelaide Ann Proctor (1825-1864); Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888). As we advance farther into the nineteenth century, we do not find that gaiety, that intense joy of living which are so characteristic of Fanny Burney and Lady Morgan. Our women writers have become less amusing; they are terribly in earnest, much impressed with the seriousness of life, and with difficult social problems. (Preface to Second Series)

Elizabeth Inchbald
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Mrs. Elizabeth Inchbald (Simpson) ( ) was a novelist and dramatist, daughter of a Suffolk farmer. In a romantic fit she left her home at the age of 16, and went to London, where she became acquainted with Inchbald the actor, who married her in . Seven years later her husband died, and for the next ten years she was on the stage, chiefly in Scotland and Ireland. She produced many plays, including Mogul Tale I'll Tell you What Appearance is against Them Such Things Are ... The Wedding Day , and two novels, A Simple Story (1791), and Nature and Art (1796), which have been frequently reprinted. She also made a collection of plays, The Modern Theatre , in 10 volumes. Her life was remarkable for its simplicity and frugality, and a large part of her earnings was applied in the maintenance of a delicate sister. Though of a somewhat sentimental and romantic nature, she preserved an unblemished reputation. This article incorporates text from: Cousin, John William (1910). http://www.earlyrepublic.net/BIOG-I.htm
Brief Biographies from the Jackson/Van Buren Era (I):
Ibrahima, Abd al-Rahman ("Prince")
An educated Islamic negro prince of the Fulbe people. He was captured in battle, sold into slavery, shipped to America, and sold to Thomas Foster in 1789. Foster owned a moderate sized plantation near Natchez, Mississippi. A remarkable coincidence brought him in contact with an Irish-American doctor who knew him from Africa. This led eventually to African Colonizationists (Henry Clay was even involved) purchasing his freedom, under the condition that he should emigrate to Africa. After a fundraising tour of the East, he finally was put aboard a ship to Africa - one of the few Africans who had a home there to go to. He died shortly after landing in Liberia, of a fever, as did many of the "colonizers". Thomas Foster was an early settler in the Mississippi Valley. Though the future state of Mississippi was actually Spanish Territory in 1789, there were a number of emmigrants from the American South to this promising cotton-growing area. Ibrahima ran away during the first years of his enslavement, but returned, and eventually was made an overseer on the plantation.

100. Romances Ingleses Em Circulação No Brasil Durante O Séc. XIX. Sandra Guardini

http://www.unicamp.br/iel/memoria/Ensaios/Sandra/sandralev.htm
Romances ingleses em circulação no Brasil durante o séc. XIX Profa. Dra.
