Introduction
John Forster (1812-1876) was a noted biographer, critic, essayist and historian, probably best remembered for his biography of his close friend, the novelist Charles Dickens (1812- 1870). In the course of his life Forster collected a vast library, mainly, but not exclusively, of books and pamphlets. He bequeathed this collection to his wife until her death; whereupon it would pass to what was then the South Kensington Museum, so that it could be used by the nation. She generously waived her rights in order to fulfill his wishes more quickly. The Forster Collection is one of two very large and distinct collections within the National Art Library, the other being the Dyce Collection. With justice the two collections are often referred to collectively as the Dyce and Forster Collections. The respective donors were close friends and the transfer of the Dyce Collection to the Museum was overseen by Forster, who was Alexander Dyce's executor. The Forster Collection is the larger of the two, containing over eighteen thousand books, and took nearly a year and a half to be delivered to the Museum in its entirety. The following is only a brief summary of its contents.

  • Many scholars of early women’s writing will recognise the temptation which Jeffrey Cox has pointed out – and one which it is indeed difficult to resist - the temptation not simply to research neglected women writers, but to represent them, if at all possible, “as somehow contributing to a feminist tradition." He illustrates his caveat with reference to Hannah More and Felicia Hemans, women who demonstrate a “strongly conservative cultural presence” but who have “somehow” been “recouped as oppositional writers” in accounts by some revisionist readers (Cox, 2000: 24). Other recent researchers have also argued for a widening of political possibilities, demonstrating that by no means all women who took up issues relating to the cultural position of their own sex in the early modern period were necessarily speaking from a radical position It would seem that, for writers of either sex, the environment of the patent theatres of Georgian London, subject as they were to censorship after the Licensing Act of 1737, was especially unlikely to support the expression of radical views.

From Eighteenth-Century Women Playwrights [Volume 6 of Eighteenth-Century Women Playwrights contains the following plays: The Widow's Vow Such Things Are The Child of Nature Next Door Neighbours Wives as they Were and Maids as they Are Elizabeth Inchbald (1753-1821) was an actress before she became a playwright and her plays belong to the thriving theatrical culture of late eighteenth-century London. From her years as an actress in her twenties and thirties she drew detailed knowledge of how theatre performances worked. She gained extensive early experience of much of the standard repertoire by playing sometimes major roles on provincial stages in Bristol, Liverpool, Birmingham, Dublin and Scotland, and on Tate Wilkinson's Yorkshire circuit. ) From 1780, when she became a member of the Covent Garden company, she played supporting roles at Covent Garden and the Haymarket alongside the performers who, increasingly, were to form the casts of her own plays.

BRIEF HISTORY DURING THE SNOW ERA (1813-58) A speculative builder, Louis Changeur, built Edwardes Square in 1811-19 on 11 acres leased from the 2nd Lord Kensington. The square was named after Lord's Kensington's father, William Edwardes. In 1816, Mrs. Elizabeth Inchbald (1753-1821), the novelist and dramatist, lived at No. 4 Earls Terrace (the short unlabeled street on the map above "Edwards," south of Kensington Road). Her romances, A simple Story (1791) and the Nature and Art (1796), written well before the birth of John Snow, were early examples of passion novels. A central garden was laid out in 1820 and the gardener's lodge was built in Greek revival style. LOCATION IN 1859 REYNOLDS MAP (Quarter Mile Section - P 2) Source : Weinreb B, Hibbert C (eds). Editorial Notes to Mary Robinson's Letter to the Women of England El. Rose: Elizabeth Rose (1747-1815) was the 19th Clan Chief of the powerful Clan Rose. The Clan Rose inhabited Kilravock Castle in Nairnshire, Scotland, from the fifteenth century when it was built to the present day (when once again, and for only the second time, the Clan Chief is a woman). Rose married her cousin Hugh Rose (1746-1780) in June 1779 but retained her status as Clan Chief until she died. A son, also named Hugh Rose, was born February 8, 1780, and became the 20th Clan Chief. In her personal copy of Robinson's Letter , Elizabeth Rose made significant additions to Robinson's List of British Female Literary Characters at the end of this Letter, indicated in coral-colored text in this hypertext edition. Our thanks to George Rose for information on Elizabeth Rose's genealogy.
