Seven years later, discouraged with the reception given to his work and out of sympathy with the social and intellectual ideals of his country, he left Norway, not to return for a period of nearly thirty years. He established himself first at Rome, later in Munich. Late in life he returned to Christiania, where he died May 23, 1906. IBSEN'S PLAYS The productive life of Ibsen is conveniently divided into three periods: the first ending in 1877 with the successful appearance of The Pillars of Society ; the second covering the years in which he wrote most of the dramas of protest against social conditions, such as Ghosts;

Ibsen, Henrik (1828-1906)
Norvég drámaíró, költõ 1828. március 20-án született Skienben. Lecsúszott városi patrícius fia. Nyomasztó kisvárosi légkörben, a család rossz anyagi helyzete miatt patikussegédnek állt, közben orvosi és festõmûvészi pálya terveit szõtte. Lelkes versben üdvözölte a magyar szabadságharcot: Til Ungarn , 1849. A fõvárosban cikkeivel bekapcsolódott a kezdeti norvég munkásmozgalomba, s némi drámaírói hírnevet is szerzett Catilina , 1850 címû, Schiller és a forradalmi romantika hatását tükrözõ elsõ darabjával. Mindvégig szimpatizált a szocialista mozgalmakkal, üdvözölte a párizsi kommünt. 1891-ben Magyarországon is megfordult.

Henrik Ibsen, Norwegian playwright, 1828-1906, Part 1 “The strongest man in the world is he who stands most alone.” “You should never wear your best trousers when you go out to fight for freedom and truth.” “The majority is never right. Never, I tell you!” “The spectacles of experience; through them you will see clearly a second time.” “A thousand words will not leave so deep an impression as one deed.” “Castles in the air - they are so easy to take refuge in. Henrik Ibsen
Ibsen, 1870
Universitetsbiblioteket, Oslo born March 20, 1828, Skien, Nor.
died May 23, 1906, Kristiania
Norwegian playwright. Brand (1866) and the buoyant Peer Gynt (1867). After the satire Pillars of Society (1877) he found his voice and an international audience with powerful studies of middle-class morality in A Doll's House Ghosts An Enemy of the People The Wild Duck (1884), and Rosmersholm (1886). His more symbolic plays, most of them written after his return to Norway in 1891, include Hedda Gabler The Master Builder Little Eyolf (1894), and When We Dead Awaken (1899). Emphasizing character over plot, Ibsen addressed social problems such as political corruption and the changing role of women as well as psychological conflicts stemming from frustrated love and destructive family relationships. He greatly influenced European theatre and is regarded as the founder of modern prose drama.
