Janis Ian And Strange Angels To Entertain At "Mini-NARM"
Thirty years after she emerged as a child prodigy in a hippie world, Janis Ian is writing and singing songs as powerfully as ever. Her debut album for Windham Hill Records, Hunger, is a showcase for this talented composer-performer. She has found a way to translate her extraordinary gifts into every era of modern American popular song.
Strange Angels, Tribe Records, will be showcased on Saturday evening, September 13 Strange Angels features Kevin Fisher on lead vocals and guitar, with David James providing rich harmonies on vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin, and violin. Peter Tornell on drums and Jeff Alan on bass round out the band. Altogether, Strange Angels offers a melodic experience with a powerhouse delivery. Next Page

Folk legend Ian touring again 30 years after first hit By TIMOTHY FLYNN
Knight-Ridder Thirty years after her first hit - a song about interracial romance - landed on the charts, folk legend Janis Ian is touring again, in advance of a new record due soon, "Hunger on High Street." During a year when Ellen DeGeneres proclaimed her sexual orientation on her TV sitcom; when k.d. lang released an album called "Drag" (yeah, it's about smoking but, on another level, it's not); when Melissa Etheridge and her lesbian lover became parents of a baby girl; and when avowed bisexual Ani DiFranco (who performs on Ian's new record) became the exemplar of the savvy, powerful and independent recording artist, it seems appropriate to consider the career of Janis Ian, who long ago wrote about the pain of burying one's sexual identity. Ian, born Janis Eddy Fink in 1951, published her first song, "Hair Spun of Gold," in 1963. She was 12 years old. As a regular live performer in various New York folk clubs, Ian gained a reputation as a promising vocalist and a budding but still unpolished songwriter. By then she'd adopted her brother's first name as her surname.

He was recently voted the most powerful man in comedy with four Baftas and a international Emmy under his belt. He’s been on screen recently with his weekly show from New York but he’s better known to British audiences for his ‘So Graham Norton’, as well as the annoying Father Noel in the series ‘Father Ted’. After six years with Channel 4 he’s been poached by the BBC to front a Saturday night light entertainment show. He’s compared the two channels to the difference between a night out with your friends or a family Christmas lunch and media critics have pondered how his camp brand of adult humour will translate to mainstream TV. Originally born Graham Walker in Dublin in 1963, he was brought up in the small town of Bandon in West Cork. As a child he loved television describing it as a ‘window to life’ and a world he wanted to be part of. He began an English and French degree at University College Cork but dropped out after his first year and went to America where he lived in a hippy commune in San Francisco.

Singer/songwriter Janis Ian comes to Chico for the first time By Alan Sheckter SHE LEARNED THE TRUTH AT 17 The first musical artist ever to perform on Saturday Night Live (for its first on-air episode), singer/songwriter and activist Janis Ian comes to Chico for an intimate solo performance at the Chico Women's Club.
Preview: Janis Ian, Chico Women's Club, Friday, Aug. 23, 8 p.m., Tickets: $16-$18 J anis Ian burst onto the music scene as a 16 year-old prodigy in 1967 with "Society's Child," and the Associated Press dubbed her "a white teenager indicting America for its racism and hypocrisy." In the 35 years since, she has been a singer, songwriter, activist and magazine columnist. Next Friday, courtesy of North Valley Productions, she'll visit Chico for the first time. Born Janis Eddy Fink, the singer/songwriter, who can arguably be grouped with a handful of old-wave singer/songwriting women that includes Phoebe Snow, Carole King and Laura Nyro, infuses different subtleties into her songs that set many moods. After the accolades and fame from her earliest work died down, Ian re-surfaced in the mid-'70s with three critically acclaimed records. The first one

Janis Ian (a songwriter and performer) lets rip about the record industry: http://www.janisian.com/article-internet_debacle.html One other major point: in the hysteria of the moment, everyone is forgetting the main way an artist becomes successful - exposure. Without exposure, no one comes to shows, no one buys CDs, no one enables you to earn a living doing what you love. Again, from personal experience: in 37 years as a recording artist, I've created 25+ albums for major labels, and I've never once received a royalty check that didn't show I owed them money. So I make the bulk of my living from live touring, playing for 80-1500 people a night, doing my own show. I spend hours each week doing press, writing articles

Dave Winer sequel to her excellent " Internet Debacle " article. She's again making easily understood arguements, including real numbers from her own site, for allowing free and/or inexpensive downloading of music files. Ms. Ian writes: Do I still believe downloading is not harming the music industry? Yes, absolutely. Do I think consumers, once the industry starts making product they want to buy, will still buy even though they can download? Yes. Water is free, but a lot of us drink bottled water because it tastes better. You can get coffee at the office, but you're likely to go to Starbucks or the local espresso place, because it tastes better. When record companies start making CD's that offer consumers a reason to buy them, as illustrated by Kevin's email at the end of this article, we will buy them. The songs may be free on line, but the CD's will taste better. It's a thoughtful, well written piece by someone who's a performer and a consumer. Go

Parker Scott: Company of Strangers At: Don't Tell Mama
Reviewer: David Roberts for Theatre Reviews Limited [The comments from Parker Scott are from an interview that David Roberts had with the performer recently.]
At one point in his current show "Company of Strangers" at Don't Tell Mama, Parker Scott introduces his band in the following way: "Pretty boy on my left Carl Allocco, Pretty boy on my right Gerry Dieffenbach." It was at that moment that pretty boy Parker Scott redefined "boy band" for all time. Even more significantly, Parker staked a powerful claim on not only the lingua franca but on the human community's right to use the spoken and written word in the most opportune ways.
Claiming power and using power appropriately might be the real themes of Parker Scott's show. Each of the songs in the program focuses on some aspect of the human condition which makes us both somehow connected to one another and yet somehow estranged from one another, a "company of strangers." The resolution of this dichotomous state (if there is one) or, at least, the recognition of the bifurcation is most likely found somewhere on the non-conscious and/or spiritual level. This is the level Parker Scott and his band guide their audiences to in "Company of Strangers" and it is the level that has piqued Parker's interest of late. "I have recently gotten very interested in yoga and have begun taking classes. I find it an incredibly spiritual experience and it is really great just to get inside of yourself to learn and experience who you are and challenge your body, mind, and spirit."
