Synopsis
NATURAL HISTORY is the name familiarly applied to the study of the properties of such natural bodies as minerals, plants, and animals; the sciences which embody the knowledge man has acquired upon these subjects are commonly termed Natural Sciences, in contradistinction to other so-called "physical" sciences; and those who devote themselves especially to the pursuit of such sciences have been and are commonly termed "Naturalists."

[Letter] 1849 March 11 / [T.H. ?] Huxley. Huxley, Thomas Henry, 1825-1895. 1849 March 11. [1] leaf. The letter is written on paper bearing a raised seal; there is a strip of tape affixed lengthwise to the recto. Huxley asks after the recipient's experiences in London and mentions that there must be a "restorative in the air" as J. Evans has put his [text?] out already. A biologist and a science educationalist, Huxley supported Darwin's theory of evolution, and published hundreds of essays, reviews, and books in his lifetime. Apes and Angels, or the Voyage of the Beagle: an Encounter with Charles Darwin
On November 7th, 2001, at the Airport Campus of Midlands Technical College, British actor/educator Howard Burnham presented a characterization of Charles R. Darwin. This subject guide contains additional information about the people Burnham mentioned in his monologue. The guide also has links to web sites that provide detailed information about the theory of evolution, other scientists who worked on a theory of evolution such as Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Alfred Russel Wallace, and sites related to creationism (the belief that God created life) and intelligent design (the belief that life was created by an intelligent designer but not necessarily God). Proponents of the intelligent design theory claim that life is too complex to have evolved randomly, as neo-Darwinists claim. The bibliography and web page links included in this guide are only a sample of the many resources available on those topics. This guide is designed to serve as a starting point for further research. Enjoy!

This made it possible to trace the course of fibers through the nervous system and demonstrated the importance of the nucleus in the regeneration of nerve fibers. This process was subsequently termed "Wallerian degeneration".
