Huxley, Thomas Henry (18251895) From 1846 to 1850 Huxley was the assistantship s surgeon on HMS Rattlesnake on its voyage around the South Seas.
http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/H/HuxleyT/1.html
Huxley, Thomas Henry English scientist and humanist. Following the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species 1859, he became known as 'Darwin's bulldog', and for many years was a prominent champion of evolution. In 1869, he coined the word 'agnostic' to express his own religious attitude, and is considered the founder of scientific humanism.
From 1846 to 1850 Huxley was the assistant ship's surgeon on HMS Rattlesnake on its voyage around the South Seas. The observations he made on the voyage, especially of invertebrates, were published and made his name in the UK.
Huxley was born in London and studied medicine there at Charing Cross Hospital. In 1854 he became professor of natural history at the Royal School of Mines. His grandsons include Aldous, Andrew, and Julian Huxley.
Huxley found the system of classification introduced by French anatomist Georges Cuvier to be inadequate for the sea creatures he studied on his voyage. He reclassified the animal kingdom into Annuloida, Annulosa, Infusoria, Coelenterata, Mollusca, Molluscoida, Protozoa, and Vertebrata, and started a fundamental revision of the Mollusca. He also produced a new system of classification of birds, based mainly on the palate and other bony structures, which is the foundation of the modern system.
His scientific works include Man's Place in Nature 1863; later books, such as Lay Sermons 1870, Science and Culture 1881, and Evolution and Ethics 1893, were expositions of scientific humanism.

Thomas Henry HUXLEY (1825-1895)
Scientist, philosopher, skilled orator and great campaigner for the ideas of his contemporary, Charles Darwin. It was T. H. Huxley who coined the terms "Agnostic" and "Agnosticism" (the capitals are his) to describe the skeptical attitude which, in his opinion, should be adopted towards preconceived notions. "...it is wrong for a man to say that he is certain of the objective truth of any proposition unless he can produce evidence which logically justifies that certainty. This is what Agnosticism asserts; and, in my opinion, it is all that is essential to Agnosticism. That which Agnostics deny, and repudiate as immoral, is the contrary doctrine, that there are propositions which men ought to believe, without logically satisfactory evidence; and that reprobation ought to attach to the profession of disbelief in such inadequately supported propositions." Agnosticism and Christianity "...it is asserted that I have no business calling myself an Agnostic; that, if I am not a Christian, I am an infidel; and that I ought to call myself by that name of 'unpleasant significance.' Well, I do not care much what I am called by other people, and if I had at my side all those who, since the Christian era, have been called infidels by other folks, I could not desire better company."

44. Thomas Henry Huxley Quotes And Quotations - Yuni Words Of Wisdom
Thomas Henry Huxley. (18251895) English Scientist If a little knowledge isdangerous, where is there a man who has so much as to be out of danger?
http://www.yuni.com/quotes/huxley_th.html
Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) English Scientist
If a little knowledge is dangerous, where is there a man who has so much as to be out of danger?
A man's worst difficulties begin when he is able to do as he likes.
In matters of intellect, follow your reason as far as it will take you, without regard for any other consideration.
In scientific work, those who refuse to go beyond fact rarely get as far as fact.
It is the customary fate of new truths to begin as heresies and to end as superstitions.
Logical consequences are the scarecrows of fools and the beacons of wise men.
Patience and tenacity of purpose are worth more than twice their weight of cleverness.
Science is simply common sense at its best, that is, rigidly accurate in observation, and merciless to fallacy in logic.
Sit down before fact as a little child, be prepared to give up every preconceived notion, follow humbly wherever or whatever abysses nature leads, or you will learn nothing.
The foundation of all morality is to have done, once and for all, with lying; to give up pretending to believe that for which there is no evidence, and repeating unintelligible propositions about things beyond the possibilities of knowledge. The great tragedy of Science - the slaying of a beautiful hypothesis by an ugly fact.

Quote from Thomas Henry Huxley
"What are the moral convictions most fondly held
by barbarous and semi-barbarous people?
They are the convictions that authority
is the soundest basis of belief;
that merit attaches to readiness to believe;
that the doubting disposition is a bad one,
and skepticism is a sin."

Thomas Henry Huxley
Thomas Henry Huxley, the distinguished zoologist and advocate of Darwinism, madeseveral incursions into philosophy. From his youth he had studied its problems unsystematically; he had a way of going straight to the point in any discussion; and, judged by a literary standard, he was a great master of expository and argumentative prose. Apart from his special work in science, he had an important influence upon English thought through his numerous addresses and essays on the topics of science, philosophy, religion, and politics. Among the most important of his papers are those entitled 'The Physical Basis of Life' (1868), and 'On the Hypothesis that Animals are Automata' (1874), along with a monograph on Hume (1879) and the Romanes lecture Ethics and Evolution (1893). Huxley is credited with the invention of the term agnosticism to describe his philosophical position: it expresses his attitude towards certain traditional questions without giving any clear delimitation of the frontiers of the knowable. He regards consciousness as a collateral effect of certain physical causes, and only an effect -never also a cause. But, on the other hand, he holds that matter is only a symbol, and that all physical phenomena can be analyzed into states of consciousness. This leaves mental facts in the peculiar position of being collateral effects of something that, after all, is only a symbol for a mental fact; and the contradiction is left without remark.

    Thomas Henry Huxley defined science as "nothing but trained and organized common sense." Scientific method might be similarly summarized as simply "telling the truth." Science makes rigorous efforts to prevent self-interest, conscious or unconscious, from distorting the truth. In studies testing new medications, neither the physician giving the drug nor the recipient of the drug know whether the medicament being evaluated or a placebo is being given. (Washington Times)
