By 1980, power and formal leadership had gradually shifted to Deng Xiaoping and his supporters. Hua remains a member of the Central Committee (as at December 2003). Hume, David (1711-1776) Scottish philosopher (scepticism), psychologist and historian; held that task of knowledge is not to comprehend being, but to provide a guide to practical life (utilitarianism); the only objects of authentic knowledge could be mathematics since no other relations can be deduced by logic, but only from experience, which was after all only a "stream of impressions" whose causes are essentially unknowable. He held that the repeated occurrence of one event prior to another can form the basis for the formation of conceptual knowledge, but cannot constitute proof of cause-and-effect - "how do we know that the Sun will rise in the East tomorrow?" - but nevertheless knowledge can provide sufficient certainty to constitute the basis of practical life. Thus Hume attempted to rescue the positive content of Locke's philosophy from the subjectivist critique of Berkeley . See Hegel on Hume's contribution David Hume lived in the constitutional monarchy of George II under the Prime Ministers Walpole, Pelham and Pitt, a Britain which had thoroughly established a stable bourgeois system of government and was interested in building its Empire. Hume died in the year of the American War of Independence.

David Hume
Generally regarded as the most important philosopher ever to write in English, David Hume (1711-1776) the last of the great triumvirate of "British empiricists" was also noted as an historian and essayist. A master stylist in any genre, Hume's major philosophical works A Treatise of Human Nature (1739-1740), the Enquiries concerning Human Understanding (1748) and concerning the Principles of Morals (1751), as well as the posthumously published Dialogues concerning Natural Religion (1779) remain widely and deeply influential, despite their being denounced by many of his contemporaries as works of scepticism and atheism. While Hume's influence is evident in the moral philosophy and economic writings of his close friend Adam Smith, he also awakened Immanuel Kant from his "dogmatic slumbers" and "caused the scales to fall" from Jeremy Bentham's eyes. Charles Darwin counted Hume as a central influence, as did "Darwin's bulldog," Thomas Henry Huxley. The diverse directions in which these writers took what they gleaned from reading Hume reflect not only the richness of their sources but also the wide range of Hume's empiricism. Comtemporary philosophers recognize Hume as one of the most thoroughgoing exponents of philosophical naturalism.

- An Introduction -
"Indulge your passion for science, says [Nature], but let your science be human, and such as may have a direct reference to action and society. Abstruse thought and profound researches I prohibit, and will severely punish, by the pensive melancholy which they introduce, by the endless uncertainty in which they involve you, and by the cold reception which your pretended discoveries shall meet with, when communicated. Be a philosopher; but amidst all your philosophy, be still a man." (David Hume Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding , 1748: p.5) Go to David Hume Page
Go to Bibliography of David Hume David Hume was one of the greatest thinkers in Western history and certainly among the most delightful men to have ever graced a page with his pen. The eternally skeptical but always profound David Hume shook the edifice of Western thought to its very foundations - rousing the otherwise staid Immanuel Kant out of his "dogmatic slumber" to frantically attempt to rebuild it again. Over two centuries later, the rubble of the Humean earthquake - and its modern aftershocks - still lies awkwardly gazing at us from all corners of science and philosophy. A Short Biography Hume was more than a philosopher: he was also an accomplished historian, economist and sociologist - and, by all accounts, he was a really nice fellow too. David Hume presided over the "

David Hume (1711-76)
Though better known for his treatments of philosophy, history, and politics, the Scottish philosopher David Hume also made several essential contributions to economic thought. His empirical argument against British mercantilism formed a building block for classical economics. His essays on money and international trade published in Political Discourses strongly influenced his friend and fellow countryman Adam Smith. British mercantilists believed that economic prosperity could be realized by limiting imports and encouraging exports in order to maximize the amount of gold in the home country. The American colonies facilitated this policy by providing raw materials that Britain manufactured into finished goods and reexported back to the colonial consumers in America. Needless to say, the arrangement was short-lived. But even before the American Revolution intervened in mercantilistic pursuits, David Hume showed why net exporting in exchange for gold currency, hoarded by Britain, could not enhance wealth. Hume's argument was essentially the monetarist quantity theory of money: prices in a country change directly with changes in the money supply. Hume explained that as net exports increased and more gold flowed into a country to pay for them, the prices of goods in that country would rise. Thus, an increased flow of gold into England would not necessarily increase England's wealth substantially.

David Hume David Hume April 26 August 25 ) (N.B. The birthdate is May 7 by the Gregorian reckoning of his time; this date being used by the International Humanist and Ethical Union when celebrating his birthday) was a Scottish philosopher and historian and, with Adam Smith and Thomas Reid among others, one of the most important figures in the Scottish Enlightenment . Many regard Hume as the third and most radical of the so-called British Empiricists , after the English John Locke and the Anglo-Irish George Berkeley , both major influences on Hume's thought. He was also influenced by various Francophone writers such as Pierre Bayle , as well as various other figures on the Anglophone intellectual landscape such as Isaac Newton Samuel Clarke Francis Hutcheson , and Joseph Butler Historians most famously see Humean philosophy as a thoroughgoing form of Scepticism , but many commentators have argued that the element of naturalism has no less importance. Hume scholarship has tended to oscillate over time between those who emphasize the sceptical side of Hume (such as Reid, Greene, and the

A DISCUSSION OF THE REAL NATURE OF ‘SELF’ Part 1 A DISCUSSION OF THE REAL NATURE OF ‘SELF’ Part 1 derived primarily from COGNITION AND COMMITMENT IN HUME’S PHILOSOPHY by Don Garrett, Oxford, 1997, chapter 8 “Personal Identity”, pages163-186
Intro
163/164: Hume accounts for our tendency to think of ourselves as having a continuous identity through time by utilizing essentially the same mental-mechanism of identity-ascription that gives rise to the belief in “continu’d and distinct existences” (THN 202-204, i. e., A TREATISE OF HUMAN NATURE, edited Selby-Bigge, revised Nidditch, Oxford, 1978), thereby confirming the existence of this mechanism while avoiding the need to introduce another one.
164: Hume answers the question of whether memory “produces” personal identity (as Locke held) or only “discovers’ it (as Locke’s critics claimed) with a diplomatic compromise , by noting that while memory discovers resemblances and causal relations (“always”) already existing among perceptions, in doing so it also serves to produce additional resemblances (THN 260-262).
Hume is able to dismiss all “nice and subtle questions” concerning particular instances of personal identity as “grammatical” rather than substantive (THN 262). This dismissal calls into question the determinacy of many of the eschatological questions concerning the justice of divine rewards and punishment that originally motivated philosophical interest in the question of personal identity.

ELIXIRS AND THE QUINTA ESSENTIA. January 18, 2004 KANG: In light of what is said below about "absolute" knowledge, I would ask a Q of some importance, what is knowledge? GCM: 'Knowledge' is what you are forced to imagine accounting and connecting your sensual impressions to make so-called 'sense' out of them. I have never thought of that connection before. "You have to make sense out of sense." Somehow, this is not a redundancy or tautology NOR is it symbolic or merely representative. I would say "pain" is the over-riding, most important sense impelling us to 'think' things through. "Pain" supposedly communicates - a 'natural language' as Bishop George Berkeley would have it? I am slowly becoming fascinated by Berkeley KANG: Perhaps a conversation can take the place of the abandoned commentary on a work apparently devoted to this very Q.
