Hume traveled to France, where he was accepted by the court and literary society, and returned to England with his new friend, Rousseau, who later provoked a bitter fight with him. Hume finally returned to Scotland in 1768, where he died eight years later. Hume's death was mourned by intellectuals across Europe and America, and has been hailed the dominant influence in empiricist philosophers of the twentieth century.

HUME: AN OVERVIEW Hume was a Scottish empiricistwell known for his skepticism and sharpness of thought. Being a freethinker, he was easily critical of thinking which rested on no other basis than traditional argument. He also was sharply critical of thinking which did not arise from the observation of actual behavior (empiricism) but which was merely speculative in nature (rationalism). Yet at the same time he was a quietly confident and serene individual who was deeply comfortable with the worldand rather conservative in his social and political views. Even his own skepticism was tempered by his understanding of the human need for some kind of underpinning of custom or tradition in life. His major philosophical thrust was against the rationalists who were prone to build great intellectual edifices on the foundations of some "self-evident" truths. He considered such intellectualism as being highly dangerouslikely to lead to polemical excesses (as the highly intellectually charged revolutions of France in 1789 and Russia in 1917 were certainly to prove in the years after Hume). To Hume, customwhich was the sum of actual human experiencewas the only healthy foundation on which to build human life. Being an empiricist, he was impressed with the patterns by which people actually lived out their lives. Hume felt that we should pay close attention to the human record of our actual or "natural" (as he put it) behavior in order to draw conclusions about life. Hume on the other hand was most unimpressed by the great intellectual "spins" that philosophers wove around hypothetical behavior in building their great systems of thought. For Hume reality was in the doing, not in the hypothesizing about life.

    Administrative/Biographical History
The philosopher, historian and diplomat David Hume was born in Edinburgh on 26 April 1711. He was the second son of Joseph Hume of Ninewells, near Chirnside, Berwickshire. He studied law at Edinburgh University (matriculation records showing 27 February 1723) but spent more time on reading Virgil, Cicero and other Latin literature than on his intended studies. He abandoned law and followed a brief business career in Bristol but still gave much of his time to intellectual study. In 1734, Hume went to France - to Paris, Rheims, then Anjou - returning to Britain in 1737. While in France he had written much of his Treatise of human nature (1739) but when it was published it failed to engender the interest, understanding and debate that he had anticipated. Settling at the Ninewell estate again, he wrote two volumes of

    On Miracles
The Scottish philosopher David Hume (1711-1776) launched an effective critique of miraculous claims. This sceptical rationalism was a major challenge to religious belief throughout the later 18th and 19th centuries.
From David Hume. An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding
The plain consequence is (and it is a general maxim worthy of our attention), 'That no testimony is sufficient to establish a miracle, unless the testimony be of such a kind, that its falsehood would be more miraculous, than the fact, which it endeavours to establish....' When anyone tells me, that he saw a dead man restored to life, I immediately consider with myself, whether it be more probable, that this person should either deceive or be deceived, or that the fact, which he relates, should really have happened. I weigh the one miracle against the other; and according to the superiority, which I discover, I pronounce my decision, and always reject the greater miracle. If the falsehood of his testimony would be more miraculous, than the event which he relates; then, and not till then, can he pretend to command my belief or opinion. In the foregoing reasoning we have supposed, that the testimony, upon which a miracle is founded, may possibly amount to an entire proof, and that the falsehood of that testimony would be a real prodigy: But it is easy to shew, that we have been a great deal too liberal in our concession, and that there never was a miraculous event established on so full an evidence.

    - David Hume (1711-1776)
Born in Edinburgh into a Calvinist family in 1711, Hume entered Edinburgh University at the age of 12 to study law, leaving less than three years later, having concentrated more on his own interests than his course work. After a brief business career in Bristol, he moved to France and took up writing. His development of philosophical ideas had been influenced by the concepts of science and observation. His first major book "A Treatise of Human Nature" in 1739 was not an immediate success and he returned to Scotland as a companion to the Marquis of Annandale in the Borders. His next book "Essays, Moral and Political" in 1741 was more successful. Hume proclaimed the dominance of human reason over religious faith and, at a time when religious dogma was followed by most people without question, he was a self-proclaimed atheist. He was thus not able to become professor of philosophy at Edinburgh University because of his "anti-religious" views. Mixing a diplomatic career in France with further writing, his "An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding" had an influence on Adam Smith. While in Paris (as Secretary to the British Embassy from 1763-66) he became popular with French society and helped the writer Rousseau. Hume returned to Edinburgh in 1769 and mixed with the intellectuals of the capital during the phase described as "The Scottish Enlightenment". His associates included the economist

    • This collection includes both early editions of works by the Scottish philosopher David Hume (1711-1776), and extensive holdings of scholarship about his life and thought. The items below have been chosen to indicate the range of older material in the Oliver Collection, but represent only a small portion of its total holdings. Individual titles are cataloged in the library's on-line catalogue USCAN. The collection was formed by Prof. James Willard Oliver (1912-2001). Prof. Oliver (Ph.D. Harvard 1949) taught at the University of Florida and at the University of Southern California before moving to the University of South Carolina in 1964, as Professor and first Head of the new Department of Philosophy. Through Professor Oliver's generosity, his Hume collection was transferred to the University in 1997. In the following years, Prof. Oliver also transferred his substantial collections of works by and about Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) and of modern American logic, notably the logic of of W. V. Quine (1908-2000), with whom Prof. Oliver had worked at Harvard.
