The Japanese pufferfish Fugu rubripes has the shortest known genome of any vertebrate species. As vertebrates, fish and humans share not only the defining characteristic of a backbone, but also many basic anatomical and physiological similarities. The compact Fugu genome contains the same basic vertebrate blueprint as the human genome in a sequence seven times shorter. This difference is primarily due to the scarcity in Fugu of the large repeat-filled tracts that litter the human genome. The relative compactness of the Fugu genome simplifies the detection and analysis of both gene sequences and gene regulatory elements. ATTENTION!

With the impending completion of the Human Genome Project the value of the Fugu genome for comparative purposes was noted and in November 2000 the International Fugu Genome Consortium was formed, headed by the Joint Genome Institute, IMCB Singapore, and the HGMP Cambridge. Unit 14 The Human Genome Project. In 1988 the Human Genome Project (HGP) was initiated by founding the Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) in the USA. The aim of this international organisation is to decipher the whole human genome. The results of this project are supposed to further the understanding of genetic diseases and shall render possible new ways of their diagnosis and therapy. Opponents of this project, however, fear that it will have negative consequences for future human biological and social life. Because of the importance of the results of this project for future generations we want to inform today's students about different aspects of the HGP. Working with our material, developed for secondary school students, they will be confronted with the biological aspects and the non-biological aspects of the HGP, i.e., they will consider its descriptive as well as its normative characteristics. By using this EIBE Unit the students should: acquire basic knowledge about the analysis of the human genome (history of the HGP, actual state of the project), get to know the methods of mapping and sequencing a genome (physical maps, genetic linkage maps, the polymerase chain reaction) realise problems and advantages that can result from the HGP (gene diagnosis possibilities, insurance problems) be guided to find a personal substantiated point of view regarding the HGP.

The Human Genome Project: What It Means for You
James R. Lupski, M.D., Ph.D.

Genetics is becoming a factor in the diagnosis and treatment of all kinds of disorders. While aware of medical genetics' growing importance, many people, both doctors and patients, feel it is difficult to keep pace with this rapidly advancing area. Famed geneticist, Dr. Jim Lupski, outlines the basic terrain of the genome project and introduces some of its issues and vocabulary.

Birth defects are the leading cause of death among infants (0-364 days old). By age 25, eight percent of liveborns will be diagnosed with a disorder that has a major genetic component. The goals of the human genome project are to identify all genes in the human genome, determine their structure and function and determine their involvement in human disease. Let's see if we can walk through some of the basic concepts and terminology.

Since Darwin's publication of On the Origin of Species the world of biology has made many advances. These advances in biology, specifically in genetic research, would not have been possible without the use of the microscope. Improvements in the microscope lead to the ability to actually view reproductive processes, which eventually lead to genetic research. Upon the discovery of the structure of DNA the birth of the Human Genome Project occurred. Although the intentions of this project were to better society, capitalism and prejudice have twisted this project into something that our society is not prepared to deal with. This paper traces the evolutionary steps of genetic research from Darwin to Watson and Crick. Advancements made by the Human Genome Project will also be discussed in addition to problems that society faces as a result of genetic research.
Introduction
For the past few decades molecular scientists have been arduously working on a project that has the potential to revolutionize the world. The goal of this project is to determine the precise location and molecular details of all of the genes and interconnecting segments that make up the human chromosomes. This quest for the location of human genes is referred to as the Human Genome Project (HGP). The HGP is the most promising yet controversial undertaking ever attempted by the biological sciences.
