Victor Hugo (1802-1885) To mark the centenary of Victor Hugo’s death in 1985, The UNESCO Courier , then published in 32 languages, devoted an entire issue to the French writer, a salute to the man who was both a part of his century and of the future, who denounced the death penalty and fought for the rights of man and the oppressed. A medal was also struck at the Paris Mint. Designed by the French artist Louisette-Jeanne Courroy, the obverse carries a portrait of Victor Hugo at the age of 50. The reverse shows a storm-swept tree and the inscription, C’est par la fraternité qu’on sauve la liberté (Fraternity is the saviour of liberty), a declaration made by Hugo when he returned to Paris from exile in 1870. Il est le troisième fils de Leopold et Sophie Hugo. Son père qui deviendra général de Napoléon en 1809 entraîne toute la famille sur les routes de France et d'Europe. Sophie Hugo vient rejoindre son mari à Madrid avec ses trois enfants. Elle y reste un an. Cette année-là, Victor Hugo est pensionnaire dans une institution religieuse de Madrid, le collège des Nobles. His father was a Bonapartist General, his mother a strong monarchist. Hugo was something of a child prodigy as a poet, turning out translations of Latin and Greek when he was thirteen, winning prizes when he was in his teens, and by the time he was twenty, a poet with not merely a reputation, but regarded as pretty much France's greatest living poet. At fourteen he said, "I want to be Chateaubriand or nothing." Three years later Chateaubriand himself was calling Hugo that "enfant sublime". By 1823 he had received Royal pensions for his writings. He came to Paris, and fell under the influence of Charles Nodier (himself an early romantic) and the first Cenacle. He saw the English players and like many of the Romantics, was influenced for the rest of his life by the experience. With Dumas he became the leader of the Romantic movement in the theatre. In 1827, he published his play Cromwell , and the yet more influential, Preface to Cromwell In that Preface he developed his theatrical ideas which he derived from Shakespeare of mixing the grotesque with the sublime. Victor Hugo est né à Besançon en 1802, d’une mère nantaise et d’un père lorrain, alors commandant, qui deviendra général et comte d’Empire. Il est leur troisième fils, cadet d’Abel et d’Eugène. Madame Hugo vit à Paris avec ses enfants de 1804 à 1807, puis à Naples, et revient à Paris en 1809. Le temps heureux passé aux Feuillantines laissera au poète de chers souvenirs:"J’eus dans ma blonde enfance, hélas ! Trop éphémère, Trois maîtres: un jardin, un vieux prêtre et ma mère"; séjour prolongé jusqu’en 1814, mais interrompu par un voyage d’un an en Espagne (1811-1812), dont l’enfant précoce rapporte des impressions ineffaçables. Cependant il commence à souffrir de la mésentente croissante qui règne entre ses parents et aboutit bientôt à une séparation de fait. Il devient alors interne à la pension Cordier et suit les cours du lycée Louis-le-Grand (1815-1818), obtient des succès scolaires et compose ses premiers poèmes. Dès ce moment son ambition est immense: "Je veux être Chateaubriand ou rien", écrit-il en 1816. Des récompenses que lui décernent l’Académie française (1817) puis l’Académie des Jeux floraux de Toulouse (1819) l’aident à convaincre son père qui aurait voulu le voir préparer l’École Polytechnique; pour se consacrer à sa vocation littéraire, il renoncera même bientôt à des études de droit entreprises sans enthousiasme. En 1819 Victor Hugo fonde avec ses frères le Conservateur littéraire; la rédaction de cette revue va l’initier à des tâches littéraires très variées. Il est alors catholique et monarchiste et cherche à obtenir l’appui de Chateaubriand. Une Ode sur la Mort du duc de Berry attire l’attention sur son jeune talent (1820).
