Victor-Marie Hugo was one of France's most distinguished writers: a poet, dramatist and novelist of the romantic school of the 19th century. His most famous works in English are his two epic novels, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1831) and (1862), both of which have been adapted many times for stage and screen. He was exiled in 1851 by Napoleon III, but returned to France in 1870 in triumph, and his final years marked by public veneration. Hugo's character Quasimodo the Hunchback of Notre Dame has been played on-screen by Anthony Quinn Anthony Hopkins (1982), Charles Laughton (1939), and most famously by Lon Chaney (1923). Victor Hugo
Victor Hugo was born as a son of a General; because his father was permanently away he was bred chiefly by his mother. At the age of 13 he already wrote first poems and at the age of 17 he founded a critical literary magazine for which he contributed the most articles. Victor Hugo lost an important parent person when his mother died in 1821. Though Victor Hugo grew up in royal surroundings, his next poem "Les Orientales" revealed a byroneske sympathy for the Greek patriots and for the republic. In 1827 he performed "Marion de Lorme", but the play fall victim to the censorship. Hugo reacted to this failure with "Hernani" - came out in 1830; in which verses he praised a young outlaw - and produced with it a romantic movement and Hugo became a symbol for the romantic young generation. Just only 29 years old Victor Hugo wrote his most popular novel "Notre Dame de Paris - The Hunckback of Notre Dame", which once more moved a social outsider into the hub of the happening. Victor Hugo achieved with this novel to success and glory. His later life was influenced by difficult political circumstances and family bad blows (his married daughter drowned in 1843).

During his lifetime, Hugo himself was the author of most of the legend that has grown up around him, from his pastoral conception on a mountainside to his heroic republican opposition to Napoleon. Robb turns these myths inside out as he searches for the underlying compulsions that led Hugo to obsessively recreate his own history. Robb thoroughly and compassionately presents the tangled, sometimes sordid, often ridiculous events of Hugo's life, at the same time commenting knowledgeably on his work. Victor Hugo is a terrific biography of a fascinating man, a great motivator for readers to start agitating for more translations of Hugo's work. by Graham Robb Paperback - 720 pages

Victor Hugo
Victor Hugo, caricature by Daumier Hugo is truly an exceptional writer, dominating the 19 th century thanks to the depth and breath of his published works. He is a poet ( Les contemplations ), a novelist ( Notre-Dame de Paris, Les misérables ), a playwright ( Hernani ), and a strong opponent of Napoleon III. Victor Hugo, Notre-Dame de Paris Hugo situates the melodramatic plot of this novel in a solidly documented mediaeval frame. The action takes place in Paris, during the reign of Louis XI in the late 15 th century, in and around the great cathedral which gives its name to the novel. Alchemy and witchcraft blend with a complex love story where three men are in love with the same woman who loves yet another. Quasimodo, the hunchback who haunts the cathedral and who does everything to protect his beloved Esmeralda, is one of the great creations of Hugo.
The Spider King The conflict between the spider and the fly is a recurring image and a complex metaphor in Notre-Dame de Paris. Interestingly, there is a biography of Louis XI by Lawrence Schoonover whose title is The Spider King.

To mark the centenary of Victor Hugo’s death in 1985, The UNESCO Courier , then published in 32 languages, devoted an entire issue to the French writer, a salute to the man who was both a part of his century and of the future, who denounced the death penalty and fought for the rights of man and the oppressed. A medal was also struck at the Paris Mint. Designed by the French artist Louisette-Jeanne Courroy, the obverse carries a portrait of Victor Hugo at the age of 50. The reverse shows a storm-swept tree and the inscription, C’est par la fraternité qu’on sauve la liberté (Fraternity is the saviour of liberty), a declaration made by Hugo when he returned to Paris from exile in 1870.
