BG JAMES WHITE FRIERSON HUGHES
Kansas' 22nd Adjutant General
April 1, 1905 - April 1, 1909
Mayor of Potwin
Mayor of Topeka
Chief of Police - Topeka
Topeka is a poorer city today because Colonel J.W.F. Hughes no longer walks its streets. He was born in Tennessee, but lived in Topeka from 1881 till his death in 1945, a period of 64 years. He was a college graduate, very intelligent, friendly, kindly, very original, vigorous in his defense of the right and of the underprivileged, extremely courageous, the essence of politeness and courtesy, a gracious host and a man of many accomplishments and talents. Colonel Hughes had a deep-seated love of city, county, state and nation. His patriotism was of the highest degree as is shown by his membership in the armed forces for most of his adult life.
It was a consequence of his refusal, as commander of the Kansas National Guard, to obey an illegal order to eject members of the Kansas Legislature from their hall ( please see related link: Colonel Hughes and the Legislative War ), issued to him by Governor Lorenzo D. Lewelling in February of 1893, that Hughes became a national figure over night. He was court-martialed and dishonorably discharged, but the next Governor called him back to service and made him a Brigadier General.
Colonel Hughes was born at Columbia, Tennessee, January 12, 1860. He was the son of Judge and Mrs. A.M. Hughes. He had three brothers and two sisters. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1881 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He belonged to an honorary fraternity and also to an engineering fraternity, both Greek letter societies. He was married on October 6, 1885, to Miss Mary Adaline Clark, the daughter of Judge and Mrs. J. T. Clark of Topeka. To them three children were born: James C. Hughes, a retired U.S. Regular Army Colonel of Artillery of Long Beach, California; Mrs. Cecial W. Meredith, of Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Juliet Newcomb, Los Angeles, California.

Early Life and the Afghan Uprising
Flashman
In this, the first packet of the Flashman papers, young Harry Flashman is expelled from Rugby School for "beastly drunkenness." He enlists in the Army, serves under Lord Cardigan until he fights a duel with a foreign soldier, Bernier. A short period of service in Scotland during the Chartist riots follows, which introduces him to his wife-to-be, Elspeth. Flashman is then assigned to service in Afghanistan, where he is caught up in the Afghan rebellion of 1842. He is hailed as a hero upon return to England.

Project Gutenberg has assembled a mammoth and eclectic set of documents, ranging from Shakespeare and Darwin to Sax Rohmer and Edgar Rice Burroughs. As of October 1998, thanks to the efforts of Gil Jaysmith, the 1905 Thomas Nelson edition is available for any and all to read.

Ramblings with Clare Balding
Programme 5: Rugby - a town trail
First broadcast Friday 4 May 2001, 3.00-3.30 p.m. Companion: Margaret Healey, local resident and Tourist Information Officer Rugby is one of the few towns in the world to give its name to an internationally known game. Since the Rugby World Cup in 1999, the town has become a Mecca for rugby fans, and Clare starts her walk with Margaret Healey on the hallowed turf of the playing fields of Rugby School where William Webb Ellis first picked up the ball and ran. Margaret, not a great fan of the game, is able to walk Clare through the town centre pointing out other attractions of Rugby. These include the house where the poet Rupert Brooke was brought up, a shop featured in Tom Brown's School Days , and Jubilee Gardens, which used to be the site of the swimming baths. Rugby has a thriving industrial area, which had to be crossed during the walk to reach the more tranquil setting of Brownsover Hall (now a hotel) where Sir Frank Whittle developed the jet engine in the 1930s.

73. Definition Of Rugby
In 1857 a former Rugby student, Thomas Hughes (18221896) published the famousnovel Tom Brown s School Days. Thomas Robson Hay.
http://wesclark.com/rrr/define.html
Definition of Rugby
(From Collier's Encyclopedia , Edition 1997) RUGBY , a type of football game, taking its name from the English public preparatory school. Derived from soccer or association football, Rugby in turn was the forerunner of American football. Kicking and dribbling with the foot are a part of Rugby; however, continuous passing of the ball is its most characteristic feature. The game enjoys its greatest popularity in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and France. The amateur game, the main concern of this article, is played with 15 men on each team and is called "Rugby Union." The professional game is called "Rugby League," and although it resembles the amateur game in many respects, there are differences in the laws, or rules, and only 13 players on a team. The object of the game is for each side to attempt to ground the ball beyond their opponent's goal line and score the greater number of points within two 40-minute periods of play.
Playing Conditions and Scoring.
Rugby is played with an oval-shaped, leather-covered, inflated ball, 11 to 12 inches (28-30 cm) long, 23 to 24½ inches (58-62 cm) in circumference, and weighing 14½ to 15½ ounces (400-440 gm). A Rugby ball is fatter, that is, more rounded and less pointed, than an American football. Although body contact is an important feature of Rugby, no protective equipment or padding is worn. The players wear jerseys, shorts, and boots with leather studs on the bottom.

A Virtual Stroll Around the Walls of Chester
Chester's Visitors through the Ages: 6 The Rev. John Wesley , tireless preacher and traveller and the father of Methodism was a frequent visitor to Chester- indeed, one of the earliest nonconformist places of worship, the 'Octagon Chapel' was built here in 1764. Previous to its erection, Wesley was happy to preach in the open air, as he recorded here in June 1752:
Mon. 22nd.- We walked round the walls of the city, which are something more than a mile and three quarters in circumference. But there are many vacant spaces within the walls, many gardens, and a good deal of pasture ground; I believe Newcastle-upon-Tyne, within the walls, contains at least a third more houses than Chester.
I preached at six in the evening in the square to a vast multitude, rich and poor. The far greater part, the gentry in particular, were seriously and deeply attentive; though a few of the rabble, most of them drunk, labored much to make a disturbance.
