Some famous Oriel names
There is a College tradition that Sir Thomas More was a student at Oriel, but this cannot be substantiated. A tradition in his family placed him at Canterbury College (where the Canterbury Quad of Christ Church now stands). Another tradition suggests that he may have lodged in St Mary Hall , but there are no records to prove or disprove this. However, it is certain that all the following were at Oriel: Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)
Fellow 1845-1852
Poet and Critic Thomas Arnold (1795-1842)
Fellow 1815-1821
Headmaster of Rugby School and Regius Professor of Modern History Thomas Arundel (1353-1414)
Student 1373
Chancellor of England and Archbishop of Canterbury. Opposed Richard II and crowned Henry of Bolingbroke as Henry IV. George Bryan 'Beau' Brummell (1778-1840)
Undergraduate 1794
Dandy and arbiter of fashion Joseph Butler (1692-1752)
Student 1715-1721
Philosopher. Bishop of Bristol and Dean of St Paul's 1740. Bishop of Durham 1750. Thomas Hughes (1822-1896) Undergraduate 1841-1845 Author of Tom Brown's Schooldays and founder member of the Christian Socialists.

Who Was Who?
Here you will find brief biographies of prominent people involved in the formation of the Co-operative Movement. The text is taken from Arnold Bonner's "British Co-operation" (Co-operative Union 1970), Stan Newens' revised version of W.H. Brown's "Pathfinders" (1997) and other sources. A compressed account of so large and complex a movement as the Co-operative Movement forces out of consideration the individuals, even the leading personalities, who constituted and made it. Yet the Movement's ideals, principles, systems of organisation and administration originated in the minds of individuals. It was individuals also who thought, decided, formed, established, developed, discussed and debated. These brief biographical sketches are intended to give some idea of the manner of men and women who played important parts in the Co-operative Movement. It is impossible to deal with all, those selected are those whom students most frequently desire to know something about. In some cases, eg, Robert Owen or the Webbs, it is easy to get a good deal of information, but in most of those dealt with here it is difficult, which also accounts for the inclusion of some. Acland, Sir Arthur, 1847-1926

In 1831 an Act of Parliament was passed enabling the formation of the railway company. The first trials were not made until 4th October 1834 when the 2-2-2 steam engine " Vauxhall " with a small train of carriages "filled with ladies and gentlemen" traveled from Dublin to the Martello Tower, Williamstown, a distance of two and a half miles. The trip was made four times in either direction, at a speed of thirty-one miles an hour. The passengers were delighted with the comfort, and some said they could read and write with ease while moving at "this great speed."

WORLD OF THE CHILD
Stories: After 1850
The second half of the nineteenth century was the golden age of children's literature in England and the United States. Great writers teamed with great illustrators to produce the books we still consider classics. The industrial revolution led to advances in printing which made books colorful, affordable, and plentiful. The growing middle class, with its increased interest in education, expanded the audience for children's books. Pictures and Stories from Uncle Tom's Cabin Uncle Tom's Cabin , one of the most influencial books of nineteenth-century America, was first published in book form in 1852. Within a year, simplified editions for children appeared in both the United States and England. In this retelling, portions of the story are in verse. An introduction states: "this little work is designed to adapt Mrs. Stowe's touching narrative to the understandings of the youngest readers and to foster in their hearts a generous sympathy for the wronged Negro race of America." Thomas Hughes, 1822-1896.

"You know, Brown, what I would do in your shoes? Pack him off to a good public school. It's where he belongs.[and] there is only one - Rugby. " - Gerald Flood as Sir Richard Flashman Tom Brown's Schooldays Quick Take DVD Review Just Like Our Regular Reviews. Only Smurf-sized. By A.J. Carson Masterpiece Theatre in 1973, Tom Brown's Schooldays is by no means lavish. While the costumes are fine, many of the sets and filming techniques (see below) are a bit threadbare. Morant shines as the oily Flashman, but many of the other performances are merely adequate. The five episodes - collected on two discs in full-sized keepcases which slide into a cardboard outer sleeve - also suffer from lackadaisical pacing. Early scenes at the Brown household practically ooze pastoral charm, but once Tom ventures to Rugby, things slow considerably.
Video and Audio
The producers of Tom Brown's Schooldays were so thrifty that they shot the series in a rather disconcerting mix of film and videotape. The outdoor scenes and other location work (shots inside the Brown household, for example) are on film. This footage is soft, pale, and often appears grainy. Other minor nicks and flaws are also evident on occasion. Scenes shot in the studio (Rugby's interiors) are on videotape. The video footage is mostly crisp and clean. The mix of the two mediums is sure to seem odd to American audiences. Thanks to the source material, the audio is also a mixed bag. Although acceptable, some scenes do sound as if the dialogue was recorded with a single microphone placed across the room from the actors.

Introduction The aim of this essay is to provide an understanding of the historical and theological development of Muscular Christianity in Victorian Britain and how this has contributed to the relationship that exists between Christianity and Sport today. Discussion will focus on the historical and theological roots of the movement and its manifestation in the late twentieth and twenty-first century.
Historical and Theological Roots of Muscular Christianity
The origins of Muscular Christianity can be traced back to the New Testament where St. Paul and others used athletic metaphors to help describe the challenges of the Christian life (1 Corinthians 6:19; 9:24-25; and 2 Timothy. 4: 7). Two Years Ago (1857) for the Saturday Review (1857), called Tom Brown at Oxford Emile Yeast Westward Ho! (1855), and Alton Locke The Christian Socialists, a small but very influential group of academics and Protestant clergy, disseminated their ideas primarily through two journals, Politics of the People (1848-1849) and The Christian Socialist The Kingdom of God (1838) and in a later controversial publication Theological Essays Politics for the People thumos Carlyle had been influenced by the German Romanticist thought of Herder and Goethe. In trying to synthesize what Kant had described as the

The only incident worth recording here, however, was his first run at Hare-and-hounds. On the last Tuesday but one of the half-year, he was passing through the hall after dinner, when he was hailed with shouts from Tadpole and several other fags seated at one of the long tables, the chorus of which was, "Come and help us tear up scent." Tom approached the table in obedience to the mysterious summons, always ready to help, and found the party engaged in tearing up old newspapers, copybooks, and magazines into small pieces, with which they were filling four large canvas bags.
