http://www.chirk.com/ceiriog.html
The Ceiriog Valley 'A little bit of heaven on Earth' was how Lloyd George described the Ceiriog Valley. Surprisingly, this beautiful valley has remained relatively undiscovered, - a secret place. Only a few miles from the English border and the A5, one of the main tourist routes into North Wales, it has remarkably retained its cultural heritage and unspoilt countryside. The Ceiriog Valley lies immediately south of and parallel to the picturesque Vale of Llangollen. Yet it is the Ceiriog Valley that has been called 'little Switzerland' and given rise to three notable poets, undoubtedly inspired by their love for their homeland. It is all the more surprising, therefore, that had Lloyd George not spoken so passionately in its defence, we may never have known of its beauty. In 1923, Parliament was asked to grant statutory powers to impound the upper waters of the River Ceiriog and to evict the local population living within an area of 13,600 acres. Thankfully, commonsense prevailed and the proposal was defeated. Pistyll Rhaeader waterfall in the Tanat Valley (lower photo) is the highest waterfall in England and Wales (240ft). It can be reached by following the B4500 up the Ceiriog Valley and continuing onto Llanrhaedr, from where it is signposted.

Ceiriog Country Holidays Custom made Holidays designed around your own choice of accommodation and country pursuits. Ceiriog Country Holidays are set in the beautiful Ceiriog Valley, located just over the Welsh border, a valley which retains its own traditions, culture and lifestyle. Described as 'a piece of heaven that's fallen to earth' by Lloyd George, the area has remained relatively undiscovered - a secret hideaway - yet it is easily reached from the motorway network and A5, one of the main tourist routes into North Wales. Here is a valley just waiting to be explored with unrivalled countryside, excellent range of accommodation, great variety of pursuits and attractions, and a warm and friendly welcome. The variety of scenery encountered along the eighteen mile length of the valley is amazing. Rising in the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains, the River Ceiriog wends its way through heath and moorland, wooded hills and rocky outcrops, lush pastures and gentle slopes, with brooks and streams adding to its flow. Situated on its banks as it journeys downstream are the picturesque villages and hamlets of Llanarmon, Tregeiriog, Pandy, Glyn Ceiriog, Dolywern, Pontfadog and finally Chirk. This is the gateway to the valley, where the river passes beneath Thomas Telford's impressive aqueduct (and viaduct alongside) before meeting the River Dee. Nearby, the imposing Marcher fortress of Chirk Castle overlooks the mouth of the valley and the ancient boundary of Offa's Dyke.

Kate Roberts Welsh literature The term Welsh literature may be used to refer to any literature originating from Wales or by Welsh writers. However, it more often refers to literature written in the Welsh language. Literature by Welsh writers in the English language is usually called Anglo-Welsh literature. The fortunes of Welsh literature have fluctuated over the centuries, in line with those of the Welsh language. A Celtic language spoken in the western parts of Britain since pre-Roman times, and the language of the early Middle Ages is immediately recognisable to modern-day Welsh speakers. Overview of Welsh literature The Middle Ages One of the earliest known works of Welsh literature is the Gododdin, a narrative poem attributed to Aneirin (or Aneurin), a poet of the 7th century. The poem celebrates the battle between the native Britons and the Saxons at Catterick ("Catraeth" in Welsh) in about the year 600. Since Catterick is in the north of England, this work demonstrates the existence of a uniformity of culture among the peoples of England, Wales and southern Scotland in the immediate post-Roman period. The poet Taliesin, a near-contemporary of Aneirin, composed shorter poems in honour of Urien Rheged, a ruler of the kingdom of Rheged, located around the Solway Firth. Taliesin himself may have lived in that region. Taliesin's elegy on the death of Urien's son, Owain, is one of the poems preserved in the 14th century manuscript known as the

Cite / link Email Feedback Hughes, Richard, The Sisters' Tragedy (1922). Hughes was best known for his first novel, A High Wind in Jamaica (American ed., The Innocent Voyage, 1929), a bizarre tale about a group of children captured by pirates; the chilling unease of the story derives from the evil apparent, not in the pirates, but in the children. In Hazard (1938), Hughes's next novel, was a sea story reminiscent of Conrad. The novels The Fox in the Attic (1961) and The Wooden Shepherdess (1972) remain tantalizing fragments of an uncompleted study of the inter-war years entitled The Human Predicament.
