Her first book The Magic Bed Knob; or, How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons (1943) and the sequel Bonfires and Broomsticks (1947) were later reworked into Bed-Knob and Broomstick (1957), the basis for the 1971 Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks , starring Angela Lansbury. In 1952 the first of the books in the Borrowers series, The Borrowers was published to great critical acclaim. It won the Carnegie Medal, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award Book, and was named an ALA Distinguished Book. This was followed by The Borrowers Afield The Borrowers Afloat The Borrowers Aloft Poor Stainless: A New Story About the Borrowers (1971), and The Borrowers Avenged (1982), which includes Poor Stainless . Biographical Sketch
Dorothy Eugenie Brett, born in 1883, was the eldest daughter of the 2nd Viscount Esher, Reginald Baliol Brett, and his wife Eleanor. Besides Dorothy, called "Doll" by her family, there were two older brothers, Oliver and Maurice, and a younger sister, Sylvia. The children were raised in a restrictive manner similar to other children of the Victorian era. They saw little of their parents, being largely left in the charge of a nanny and other servants. Once the boys were sent to school, a governess was retained for the girls. However, she was dismissed after a short time and the girls' education was left to their mother. The girls lived a fairly secluded life into their early twenties. Aside from dancing classes with the royal children at nearby Windsor Castle, under the supervision of no less than Queen Victoria, their contact with young people their own age was practically nonexistent. One friendship that they did make was with Margaret Brook, Ranee of Sarawak, a friendship disapproved of by the Brett parents. Over ten years Dorothy formed an emotional attachment to the Ranee, and Sylvia attracted the attention of the Ranee's son, whom she later married against the wishes of her parents. The parents put an end to Dorothy's visits to the Ranee when she was 23, sending her off to their summer home in Scotland. There, an old friend of the family saw some of Dorothy's drawings and persuaded her parents that she should attend the Slade School of Art.

From the Spirit of Gardening Website
I have a strong antipathy to everything connected with gardens, gardening and
gardeners. ... Gardening seems to me a kind of admission of defeat. ... Man
was made for better things than pruning his rose trees. The state of mind of
the confirmed gardener seems to me as reprehensible as that of the confirmed
alcoholic. Both have capitulated to the world.
Both have become lotus eaters and drifters.
    - Colin Wilson, A Book of Gardens, 1963 When confronted with two evils, a man will always choose the most attractive.
    - Anonymous The garden is like a spoiled beauty. There is no limit to its demands for admiration. It is new not only each spring, but each month, almost each day of the year. You may be required to find something fresh to say about it at least twenty-five times in one season, something which usually turns out to be grossly ignorant and unsatisfactory. - Scribner's Magazine (July 1915) The older one grows, the more one likes indecency.

It's wonderful to leave 'tree-lined Queensgate', as our holiday brochure describes this canyon of a thoroughfare, and enter a parkland landscape with just the odd building half visible through the trees in the distance. You could be in the grounds of some stately home in deepest England. The parks in Paris are impressive with their grand avenues of trees focused on some grand palace, or on the Eifel Tower, but I prefer the more relaxed, natural look of Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park A jogger runs by, pushing a baby buggy, the fashionable variety with three large wheels, as if in training for a new Olympic event. The baby is either enjoying it immensely or desperate to get out; he waves his little arms in excitement as he's propelled along.
