About the Book
In Lobsticks and Stone Cairns , over one hundred Arctic stories are told about adventurers, military officers, authors, guides, cultural heroes, police, traders, and even the occasional charlatan. While some of the biographies in the book are of people still active in the North, others tell stories from as far back as the sixteenth century. The subjects of the sketches are Inuit, European, American, Indian, and Canadian men and women. The exploits discussed in this generously illustrated book bring northern history and geography to life. Each profile is accompanied by a short bibliography.
Lobsticks are trees that are used as markers. Above the tree-line, stone cairns are used in their place. It is hoped that these biographies of "human" landmarks will help you find your way around in the North and bring the Arctic just a little closer to home. About the Author Richard C. Davis

A WOMAN'S WAY THROUGH UNKNOWN LABRADOR
An Account of the Exploration of the Nascaupee and George Rivers
By Mrs. Leonidas Hubbard, Junior Published October 1908 TO ELLEN VAN DER VOORT HUBBARD HIS MOTHER, WHOM HE LOVED AND LEONIDAS HUBBARD HIS FATHER, WHO WAS ONE OF HIS HEROES PREFACE This book is the result of a determination on my part to complete Mr. Hubbard's unfinished work, and having done this to set before the public a plain statement, not only of my own journey, but of his as well. For this reason I have included the greater part of Mr. Hubbard's diary, which he kept during the trip, and which it will be seen is published exactly as he wrote it, and also George Elson's account of the last few days together, and his own subsequent efforts. I hope that this may go some way towards correcting misleading accounts of Mr. Hubbard's expedition, which have appeared elsewhere. It is due also to the memory of my husband that I should here put on record the fact that my journey with its results - geographical and otherwise - is the only one over this region recognised by the geographical authorities of America and Europe.

Emily Pauline Johnson (Tehakionwake): Ontario to British Columbia, 1861-1913 The daughter of a Mohawk chief and an English gentlewoman, Pauline was raised on the banks of the Grand River in Brantford, Ontario, which first inspired her naturalistic verse. Tehakionwake visited England in 1894 to become the toast of London, reciting her "redskin poems" in deerskins and returning in a ball gown to recite Longfellow and Shakespeare. After touring across Europe for several years, she settled in Vancouver. Pauline died of breast cancer at age fifty-two. She is buried at Siwash Rock in Vancouver's Stanley Park. This is at least the third known setting of her most famous poem. West wind, blow from your prairie nest
