Excerpt
It seemed this morning as if something unusual must happen. It was as if we were coming into a hidden country.
"My Explorations in Unknown Labrador" 822 These words were written in 1906, and they record the thoughts of Mina Benson Hubbard as she went down the George River towards the camps of the "Barren Ground People" during the penultimate stage of her 1905 expedition across Northern Labrador. Mina was referring to the ancestral lands of the Nascaupi Indians, but her words suggest that there is more at stake in her narrative than her visit to the remote, "hidden country" of the Nascaupi in the interior of one of the Canadian North's most unforgiving and inaccessible areas. In this search through the hidden country of Mina's life and life writing, I want to explore her diary from the 1905 expedition, two articles she published in 1906 about that expedition, and her 1908 book A Woman's Way Through Unknown Labrador.

cover of A Woman's Way Through Unknown Labrador 2004, McGill-Queen's University Press A Woman's Way Through Unknown Labrador has just been released. This reissue, edited and fully annotated by Sherrill Grace, makes the complete work available for the first time since the original 1908 publication and features an introduction that situates Hubbard's writing in the context of her life and times, making clear how unusual - and unexpected - it was for a woman to undertake such an expedition, let alone going on to write and lecture about it. The book contains 51 illustrations and a major map of the interior of Labrador, of her 1905 expedition across the wilderness that claimed her husband's life in 1903. Summaries
... Links This book chronicles the doomed efforts of a small expedition which set out, in 1903, to cross and map an area of central Labrador previously unknown to anyone but the local native people.
Dillon Wallace, Leonidas Hubbard, and George Elson encountered many hardships before cold and starvation sent them fleeing back towards their starting point. However, one of them did not survive the return trip.
The Thematic Literature 3201 class at Jane Collins Academy in 2000-2001, in the course of studying this book, realized that no useful resources existed on the web to help them. This site is an attempt to solve that problem.

The Rumpled Bed of Autobiography: Extravagant Lives, Extravagant Questions,
Two recent works, Tracey Emin’s installation "My Bed" and Dave Eggers’s memoir A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, exemplify the provocative self-presentations in diverse media that are "rumpling" the procrustean bed of autobiography and raising intriguing theoretical questions about autobiographical acts. Are these presentations of "life" embodied materiality, "authentic" citation, or exploitation? Are these violations of norms of gender and class "sincere" self-disclosure or transgressive excess? How do such performances both maintain and breach the autobiographical pact? And how do the performances of "bad girls" and macho "boys" call upon critics to remake theory? Mary Jean Corbett

Wallace as a Boy
Dillon Wallace was born June 24th, 1863, in Craigsville, New York. His parents, Dillon Wallace Sr. and Rachel Ann Ferguson, had five children in total. Their eldest daughter, Annie, was born in 1862, one year before Dillon Jr. In 1869, they gave birth to another daughter, Ruth, but she died at the age of ten. Another girl, Jessie, was born in 1871, and their last child, a boy, died as a baby. Dillon Wallace Sr. started his career as a teacher, and later worked as a journalist on the staff of the New York Tribune. He eventually settled into a career as a lawyer and insurance broker. When Dillon was four years old, his family moved to Ridgebury, a farming village east of the Hudson River where they lived in a farmhouse at the base of a hill. It was here that Dillon started his studies - attending the local one-room school when he was not needed on the farm. Dillon developed a fondness for the great outdoors during his time in Ridgebury. At the age of nine, Dillon would explore the fields and woodlands near his home and, armed with an old shotgun, he loved to accompany his grandfather on hunting excursions. He loved finding his own way along unfamiliar trails, and dreamt of exploration and adventure.

In June 2005, a number of scholars, graduate students, and aboriginal adventurers will gather in North West River to discuss the theme of Labrador exploration as seen in literature, history, anthropology and folklore, while marking the 100th anniversary of the journey of Mina Benson Hubbard. The symposium is the inspiration of the Mina Hubbard Celebration committee, which has asked the Labrador Institute of Memorial University to bring together people who have studied forms of exploration in Labrador. The Institute would like to invite those with an interest in Labrador to attend the three-day symposium. document.write(document.URL)
