Apologia
This literary trifle, A Message To Garcia, was written one evening after supper, in a single hour. It was on the Twenty-second of February, Eighteen Hundred Ninety-nine, Washington's Birthday: we were just going to press with the March Philistine. The thing leaped hot from my heart, written after a trying day, when I had been endeavoring to train some rather delinquent villagers to abjure the comatose state and get radioactive. The immediate suggestion, though, came from a little argument over the teacups, when my boy Bert suggested that Rowan was the real hero of the Cuban War. Rowan had gone alone and done the thing - carried the message to Garcia. It came to me like a flash! Yes, the boy is right, the hero is the man who does his work - who carries the message to Garcia. I got up from the table, and wrote A Message To Garcia. I thought so little of it that we ran it in the Magazine without a heading. The edition went out, and soon orders began to come for extra copies of the March Philistine, a dozen, fifty; a hundred, and when the American News Company ordered a thousand, I asked one of my helpers which article it was that stirred up the cosmic dust. "It's the stuff about Garcia," he said. The next day a telegram came from George H. Daniels, of the New York Central Railroad thus, "Give price on one hundred thousand Rowan article in pamphlet form - Empire State Express advertisement on back - also how soon can ship."

Elbert Hubbard's Roycoft community ONE OF THE great commercial and artistic successes of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was the arts and crafts community established in 1895 by Elbert Green Hubbard (1856-1915) in East Aurora, New York. It was founded as a small printing establishment but quickly expanded to include cabinetmaking, metalworking, and leathercrafting. A traveling exhibition entitled Head, Heart and Hand: Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters is the first thorough study of this remarkable man and his creative community. It was organized by the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester and the American Federation of Arts and will be on view at the Memorial Art Gallery until January 8, 1995. The exhibition includes nearly two hundred examples of furniture, books, leatherwork, and metalwork, as well as period photographs of the buildings and craftsmen.

Biographical Notes
Everett C. Johnson
Everett C. Johnson was born on September 8, 1877, in Blackwater, Delaware, to Isaac (d. 1917) and Belinda (Williams) Johnson. He grew up in Selbyville, Delaware, where he attended school and became lifelong friends with John G. Townsend (1871-1964), a friendship that would later bear fruit in Johnson's political career. In 1895 Johnson entered Delaware College, where he graduated in 1899 with a Latin Scientific major. In 1898 he was the editor of the college's first yearbook, and frequently wrote articles for the college paper, the Review , as well as for the Delta Phi Literary Society Newsletter. These activities helped prepare him for his future publishing and editing career. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement, he also developed an interest in painting and the book arts.

The Winterthur Library The Joseph Downs Collection of Manuscripts and Printed Ephemera OVERVIEW OF THE COLLECTION Creator: Roycroft Shops Title: Collection Dates: ca.1900-1938 Call No.: Col. Acc. No.: Quantity: 11 boxes Location: 34 E 2 BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT Founded by Elbert Hubbard in 1895, the Roycroft Shops combined the ideals of William Morris with the techniques of capitalism. The business developed out of the growth of the craftsman movement in America that was in part promoted by Hubbard through his Roycroft Press. Those who worked for Hubbard were known as the Roycrofters. By 1900, the Roycroft Shops were successfully marketing handcrafted items, including carpets, sculpture, and mission style furniture, in addition to publishing two periodicals, The Fra and The Philistine Despite the popularity of their style, these products were eventually eclipsed by Gustav Stickley's highly promoted products and by mass produced goods in Grand Rapids Michigan By 1910, Hubbard found himself promoting smaller, more portable items, producing a full line of hand-wrought copper and leather goods. A 1914 Roycroft catalog listed merchandise in stylized Art Nouveau with everything from lamps to textiles and table decorations.

Omaggio a Elbert Hubbard, scrittore americano (1856-1915). Un amico e' uno che sa tutto di te e nonostante questo gli piaci. Non prendere la vita troppo sul serio: tanto, per quanto tu possa faticare, alla fine non ne uscirai vivo.  (Don't take life too seriously: You're not getting out alive, anyway). (Attribuita anche a Kin Hubbard e a J.Robert Hoppenheimer) Il genio puo' avere le sue limitazioni, ma la stupidita' non ha tale limitazione. (Genius may have its limitations, but stupidity is not thus handicapped...)
