It was a serene landscape that Hubbard used to his advantage in creating a pastoralcampus environ suited to open-air meeting areas and outdoor activities. Shortly after the turn of the century, this walkway called "The Appian Way," named after the ancient Roman highway, was established through the middle of the Campus Green. Its purpose was to provide direct access from the Roycroft Inn to the rest of the Campus, much in the same manner that the original Appian Way connected Rome to the rest of the Italian peninsula. The Appian Way was originally flanked on the right side by a stone well, a water pump, a well sweep, a bronze stature of Michelangelo sculpted by Paul Bartlett in 1909, and a bronze statue of Elbert Hubbard created by Roycroft sculptor

n 19th century England, the Arts and Crafts movement was an outraged response to the Industrial Revolution, which was threatening time-honored manual crafts with extinction. The movement was also one of social and political reform. John Ruskin (1819-1900) w as an artist, scientist, poet, environmentalist, philosopher, and the preeminent art critic of his time. In terms of art, he provided the impetus that gained respectability for the Pre-Raphaelites. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Elbert Hubbard (1859-1915), author, publicist, and merchandiser, was born in Bloomington, Illinois, the son of Dr. Silas and Juliana Frances (Read) Hubbard. In his twenties he was involved in merchandising in Chicago, and developed some promotional schemes like offering premiums to encourage sales. Hubbard came under the Arts and Crafts influence of William Morris, and developed the Roycroft Shop at East Aurora, New York, which employed as many as five hundred workers. One product was deluxe editions of classic books, printed in a distinctive style. Hubbard was also a profific writer. He was not afraid to be frankly inspirational. He wrote most of the material in his monthly, The Philistine, including in each issue "A Little Journey to the Home of" some well-known person. His best-known story was "A Message to Garcia," set in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, about a man who was given a job to do and got it done under extreme difficulty without asking questions or complaining. (It was written at the suggestion of a dissatisfied employer.)

Malcolm A. Love Library San Diego State University San Diego, California January 2003 Introduction Although initially developed in England in the late nineteenth century, the Arts and Crafts Movement and its ideals supporting fine craftsmanship and design quickly manifested itself in the United States between 1890-1920 in pottery, furnishings, architecture and printing. Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) founded his Roycroft Printing Shop in 1895 and created books treasured today for their craftsman style, fine bindings, handmade paper, and elaborately designed and decorated pages.

Quotes on Education
The educational process has been the subject of much comment by academics and writers. Their observations range from praise to cynicism, mostly the latter. Education is an easy target for criticism because its stated aims are often so nobly ambitious that they have little chance of being realized. It should give us pause that so many people who have made their mark in the world of ideas, who have been acknowledged leaders and innovators, have held formal education and educational institutions in low regard. We have collected here a variety of thought-provoking observations on education. First, some definitions of education.

East Aurora’s Mystical Community It’s always surprising how famous someone can be in life and how forgotten two generations after. Elbert Green Hubbard (1856-1915) - an early feminist and a pre-Woodstock longhair - was one of the most influential men of his day, but his name is hardly a household word now. A rich soap salesman by thirty, Hubbard retired to become a speaker, an author, a journalist, a publisher, a country philosopher, and the founder of East Aurora’s Roycroft community. He was an advertising pioneer who did not shy away from political debates, and this is probably what doomed his posthumous notoriety. Hubbard - the philosopher of entrepreneurship - trod on the toes of a few too many of those who would go on to become the arbiters of posterity’s taste. It could also be that he

The Arts and Crafts Movement in the American Midwest
The Book Arts
Back to the Midwest On to Architecture The Book Arts The American Arts and Crafts interest in book design was inspired by the creativity and innovation of the British artist William Morris. At a time when cheap machine production dominated, Morris wanted to show people the beauty of handcrafted items. He began a revival in fine printing at his Kelmscott Press in 1891, located at Hammersmith, a community of artisans outside London. Morris also experimented in at least twenty other crafts ranging from designing wallpaper and household items to illuminating handwritten volumes. Morris influenced many American printers. In the east, such famous presses as Thomas Bird Mosher in Maine, Will H. Bradley's Wayside Press in Massachusetts and D.B. Updike's Merrymount Press in Boston began printing fine press volumes based upon the Morris ideals and set standards for others to emulate. Like Morris, they sought to make the book a thing of beauty worthy of the thoughts contained within it. They wanted to produce the book as an object of art. One of Morris's central objectives in fine book printing was the desire to achieve the "whole" book. He and the American Arts and Crafts book artists who followed him were attentive to every aspect of the printing, from type design to cover art to bindings. Susan Otis Thompson in

Leonard Roy Frank What we found in examining diaries, letters, autobiographies, pediatric and pedagogical literature back to antiquity was that good parenting appears to be something only historically achieved, and that the further one goes back into the past the more likely one would be to find children killed, abandoned, beaten, terrorized and sexually abused by adults. Indeed, it soon appeared likely that a good mother, one who was reasonably devoted to her child and more or less able to empathize with and fulfill its needs, was nowhere to be found prior to modern times. It seemed to me that childhood was one long nightmare from which we have only gradually and only recently begun to awaken. LLOYD deMAUSE
"Psychohistory and Psychotherapy,"
Foundations of Psychohistory
When you arrange parenting modes on a scale of decreasing health, from empathic down to the most destructive child-battering parents, you have also listed historical modes of child care reaching back into the past. It is as though today's child abuser were a sort of "evolutionary arrest," a psychological fossil, stuck in a personality mode from a previous historical epoch when everyone used to batter children.
