Martins Ferry, Ohio. Both in his own novels and in his critical writing, Howells was a champion of realism in American literature. His education was gained by voracious reading as he worked for his father, a town printer in various small towns in Ohio. Howells early turned to writing and to editorial work on the Ohio State Journal (1856–61). He wrote a campaign biography of Lincoln in 1860 and was given an appointment as consul in Venice in 1861. About W.D. Howells
William Dean Howells (1837-1920), author, editor, and critic, was born on 1 March 1837 in Martinsville, now Martin's Ferry, Ohio, the second son of eight children born to Mary Dean Howells and William Cooper Howells, a printer and publisher. As the family moved from town to town, including a year-long residence at a utopian commune in Eureka Mills, later described in his New Leaf Mills (1913), Howells worked as a typesetter and a printer's apprentice, educating himself through intensive reading and the study of Spanish, French, Latin, and German. After a term as city editor of the Ohio State Journal in 1858, Howells published poems, stories, and reviews in the Atlantic Monthly and other magazines. A longer work, his campaign biography for Abraham Lincoln, earned him enough money to travel to New England and meet the great literary figures of the day-Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, James Russell Lowell, and Walt Whitman among them. Awarded the post of U. S. Consul to Venice in 1861 for his service to the Lincoln campaign, Howells lived in Italy for nearly four years. During his residence there, he married Elinor Mead Howells in 1862, and by 1872 the couple had three children: Winifred (b. 1863), John Mead (b. 1868), and Mildred (b. 1872). After leaving Venice, Howells became first the assistant editor (1866-71) and then the editor (1871-1881) of the

Born in the midwest, he nonethless became one of the most popular among the literary spokespeople of the Northeast. Very soon I'll be adding other photos, a biographical sketch and a clickable list of materials so that you can read his work to your heart's delight. For example, he wrote a sketch about walking through New York's east side , an image which you can compare with Abraham Cahan's image of New York.
In one of his early works, Their Wedding Journey , he vividly sketches the streets of New York from the eyes of two adventuring newly-weds from Boston: ...continue reading an illustrated version of

I know, indeed, of nothing more subtle satisfying and cheering than a knowledge of the real good will and appreciation of others. Such happiness does not come with money, nor does it flow from a fine physical state. It cannot be bought. But it is the keenest joy, after all; and the toiler's truest and best reward.

William Dean Howells - (1837-1920) Martin's Ferry By Jeff Postow I. Personal and Professional Life William Dean Howells, an American novelist, critic, editor, and realist writer, was born on March 1, 1837, at Martin's Ferry, Belmont County, Ohio. He was one of eight children of a struggling printer and publisher, William Cooper Howells and Mary Dean Howells (Carter 13). As the Howells family traveled around Ohio with their father, from one ailing enterprise to another, Howells received little formal education (Carter 14). Although Howells received little formal education, his father supported his interest in literature and supplied Howells with works from his extensive private collection of famous authors. From reading these works, Howells taught himself Spanish and German in order to read works by Spanish and German authors (Carter 14). Howells continued his self-education as his family moved throughout Ohio. From Hamilton, Ohio, where his father edited the Intelligencer , Howells's family moved to Dayton where his father tried unsuccessfully to revitalize the ailing
