Many libraries have Sky and Telescope magazine back to volume 1 and photocopy services. So, please try to find the articles at your end. Thanks for your consideration! How many times have you leafed through dozens of issues of because you are certain that there was an article about some astronomer in it? This index should save you some time, but it is not intended to be an all-encompassing document. I first began working on it from my own issues (Sep. 1965 onward) in order to fill out the name index for a book. I was primarily interested in references to articles that listed birth and death dates. When I went back to complete the index back to Vol. 1, No. 1, I decided to include information of a more general nature. Of course it is not possible (or necessary) to include all the references to astronomers such as Galileo, Kepler, or even Henry Norris Russell, but how else are you going to find a reference to Dr. G. Waltemath or to the astronomical pirate, Basil Ringrose? As a great deal of biographical information is contained in the column "Astronomical Scrapbook," I give in the

    95. State Capitol
The grandfather clock in the governor s office dates from about 1750 and oncewas owned by the prominent Iowa author Emerson Hough of Newton (18571923).
    http://publications.iowa.gov/archive/00000135/01/profile/8-3.html
IOWA PROFILE photo courtesty of Iowa Division of Tourism STATE CAPITOL Location of the Capitol on its commanding site resulted from a series of decisions that began almost with statehood. The new state quickly recognized that the Capitol should be farther west than Iowa City, and the 1st General Assembly, in 1846, authorized a commission to select a location. Amidst rivalries, a Jasper County selection was made, and then rejected. In 1854, the 5th General Assembly decreed a location "within two miles of the Raccoon fork of the Des Moines River." The exact spot was chosen when Wilson Alexander Scott gave the state 9 ½ acres where the Capitol now stands. A group of Des Moines citizens built a temporary Capitol (which was later bought by the state) near where the Soldiers and Sailors monument now stands. In 1857, Governor James W. Grimes proclaimed Des Moines to be the capitol city, and state papers and functions were transported there. The temporary Capitol was in use for 30 years, until destroyed by fires; but in the meantime, the permanent Capitol was being planned and built. In 1870, the General Assembly established a Capitol commission to employ an architect, choose a plan for a building (not to cost more than $1,500,000), and to proceed with the work, but only by using funds available without increasing the tax rate.

    Halcyone
In Greek myth, the daughter of Aeolus (god the winds), and wife of Ceyx. Halcyone threw herself into the sea when her husband drowned. Out of pity, the gods changed the pair into kingfishers. Zeus forbade the winds to blow seven days before and after the winter solstice, the period believed to be the birds' breeding season. The expression "halcyon days", a time of peace and calm, comes from this myth.

In Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt , Peer finds his way into the cavernous hall of the Mountain King (a troll), and narrowly escapes with his life. Edvard Grieg's musical suite for the play, in particular the music for this scene, is arguably better known than the play itself.
