This from my latest Anecdotage.com newsletter: Anecdotage.com Presents... Harry Houdini "On one of his European tours, the master magician and locksmith Harry Houdini found himself locked in by his own thinking. After he had been searched and manacled in a Scottish town jail, the old turnkey shut him in a cell and walked away. Houdini quickly freed himself from his shackles and then tackled the cell lock. But despite all his efforts, the lock wouldn?t open. "Finally, ever more desperate but completely exhausted, he leaned against the door - and it swung open so unexpectedly that he nearly fell headlong into the corridor. The turnkey had not locked it." Houdini, Harry Ehrich Weiss (1874-1926), American escape artist and magician [noted for his daring feats and penchant for showmanship] Source: Harold Kellock, Houdini I know there's a lesson in there for me somewhere. I just have to figure out how to apply it. Posted by jenv at February 10, 2003 12:47 PM

A book given by the legendary magician Harry Houdini (1874-1926) to a bookshop owner and his wife as thanks for aiding him in his hour of need is to be sold by Bonhams Auctioneers in Bath on Tuesday 31 May. Born Erich Weiss in Budapest, Hungary, in 1874, Houdini’s parents took him to America with them when he was four. He grew up in Wisconsin, America and began performing magic as a teenager first calling himself Eric the Great. After reading "The Memoirs of Robert-Houdin," the autobiography of one of the greatest magicians of the day, he adopted the name Houdini as a mark of his admiration. Houdini was probably most famous for his Challenge Act, which saw him escape from any pair of handcuffs produced by a member of the public. Increasingly, his escapes become more daring and he successfully freed himself not just from handcuffs, but from almost any location, from jail cells to padlocked mailbags. Houdini also asked police officers in the cities where he performed to design their own challenges which further enhanced his reputation as an escape artist.

Budapest, Hungary Inducted 2004 - (top vote getter of all time) Ehrich Weiss (Harry Houdini) born to Rabbi Mayer Samuel Weiss and his wife Cecelia on March 24, 1874 in Budapest, Hungary.. In addition to staging his miraculous escapes, Houdini worked to expose fake spirit mediums; wrote, directed and starred in films; amassed a tremendous rare book collection; and flew some of the earliest airplanes (in 1910 he used a Voisin biplane to visit Australia, thereby making the first controlled powered flight in that country; he even documented his adventure on film). top To this day, Harry Houdini is the escape artist by which all others are measured. Every Halloween (National Magic Day), magicians across the country commemorate his life and achievements by giving free performances at local charities. (Roger Dreyer, CEO of Fantasma Toys, is considered one of the world's leading experts on the Great Houdini; some of the the photographs shown here come from his personal collection.) Few performers have ever captured the public imagination like Harry Houdini. From his breakthrough in 1899 to his death in 1926, Houdini was one of the world's most popular entertainers, a true star of stage and screen. Time and again, his escapes from seemingly impossible predicaments thrilled audiences, who found in him a metaphor for their own lives, an affirmation of the human capacity to overcome adversity. Escapism in both senses of the word. But while nearly everyone is familiar with Houdini's stage persona, his little-known personal life is equally revealing. Taken as a whole, the public and private views make "The Elusive American" a uniquely powerful window on his times.

A long campaign by a small group of dedicated magicians sulminated in the issuance of this amazing postage stamp by the United States Postal Service. top After almost three decades of public performances, Houdini eventually found a new and powerful way to reach people: the motion picture. He made his first film, a serial called "The Master Mystery," in 1918, just as the movie business was about to take off. Although his acting was wooden and screen magic held none of the mystery of live magic, Houdini became one of Hollywood's first action heroes, and his movies delighted audiences around the world. Now in his mid-forties and physically worn-out, he was thrilled to be able to perform an escape once and have it preserved forever. And in typical fashion, Houdini jumped into the new medium with both feet: not content just being a star, he started his own production company and several other movie-related ventures, all of which lost money. (At left: Houdini and his beloved mother) Another great passion of Houdini's emerged in the early '20s, when he became a leading critic of the Spiritualist movement sweeping Europe and America in the wake of World War I. Perhaps embarrassed by his lack of formal education, Houdini had always worked hard to educate himself; his great passion was the history of magic, and he amassed one of the greatest collections of such material in the world. Thus when Spiritualist mediums gained considerable attention by claiming to be in touch with the spirit world, the world's most famous illusionist felt compelled to reveal them for what they were: highly skilled performers.
