Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 2 items Houdini, Harry , professional name of Ehrich Weiss (1874-1926), American magician, born in Budapest, Hungary. His parents brought him to the United States in his infancy, and they settled in Appleton, Wisconsin. He took his professional surname from that of the French magician Jean Eug¨ne Robert-Houdin. Houdini began his career in 1882 as a trapeze performer. Subsequently he became world famous for his performances of feats of magic. He showed astounding ability in extricating himself from handcuffs, ropes, locked trunks, and bonds of any sort. At one time he had himself tied and then locked in a packing case, which was bound with steel tape and dropped into the harbor off the Battery in New York City. Houdini appeared on the surface of the water in 59 seconds. Houdini attributed all his feats of magic to natural, physical effects and explained how many of his tricks were performed. He exposed the tricks of fraudulent spiritualistic mediums, often producing “spiritualistic” phenomena himself that he explained in nonmystical, physical terms. Before he died, Houdini arranged a definitive test of spiritualism. He devised a ten-word code that he would communicate to his wife, if possible, within ten years after his death. After he died, various mediums maintained that they were able to establish contact with him, but none was able to transmit to his wife the prearranged code. He left his library of magic, one of the most valuable in the world, to the Library of Congress. Among his writings are

He was able to free himself from handcuffs, ropes, locked trunks, and many types of bonds. Houdini attributed his magic to natural, physical effects and explained how many of his tricks were performed. His writings include Miracle Mongers and Their Methods (1920) and A Magician Among the Spirits (1924). Theater and Film, "The Great Houdini" gains wide publicity by executing an escape from London's Scotland Yard, becomes a main attraction at London's Alhambra Theatre, and begins a 4-year tour of the Continent. U.S. escape artist Ehrich Weiss, 26, has adopted the name Houdini from the French magician Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin; having studied Robert-Houdin's work, his book The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin in 1908 will show that the Frenchman's dexterity was much exaggerated, and he will far surpass Robert-Houdin's reputation with feats such as having himself shackled in irons, locked into a roped and weighted box, dropped overboard from a boat, and emerging with a smile before baffled audiences.

Scarce Typed Letter Signed, Houdini, one page, 5½” x 7”, April 4, 1922, on personal stationery. Houdini cordially invites a New York Daily News cartoonist to be his guest at Houdini’s birthday performance —and perhaps does a bit of marketing for his show . In full: “I have a birthday Thursday, April 6, and would like to celebrate it by inviting my friends among the cartoonists to the Times Square Theatre and if you can be present Thursday evening I would be ever so much obliged to you. / Please give me a ring Bryant 5519 or use the enclosed envelope for as many seats as you would like. Don’t be afraid to ask. I will consider it a compliment for the favors you have shown me in the past.” This letter highlights an intriguing issue about Houdini’s birthday. Houdini claimed that he was born April 6, 1874, in Appleton, Wisconsin. Instead, he was born Ehrich Weiss on March 24, 1874, in Budapest, Hungary. His parents, a Jewish rabbi and his wife, moved to Appleton with their family when Houdini was a toddler. In Houdini: The Man Who Walked Through Walls (1959), author William Lindsay Gresham recounts that Hungarian synagogue records described the birth of a boy, Ehrich, to Mayer Samuel Weiss on March 24, 1874. The book reprints a letter dated November 22, 1913, in which Houdini wrote to his younger brother, Theo, saying that because his mother always wrote him on April 6, that would be his adopted birthday. The letter was part of the collection of Theo

His family emigrated to the United States while he was an infant, and his father became the first rabbi in Appleton, Wisconsin. They later moved to Milwaukee, and eventually settled in New York. Young Ehrich's life was transformed after he learned his first trick (the vanishing quarter). At the age of 17, he changed his name to Harry Houdini and began performing in medicine shows, circuses, theaters, etc. When 100,000 people watched "The King of Handcuffs" wriggle free while hanging from a building in 1916, a newspaper reported that this was "the biggest crowd ever assembled in Washington at one place except for the inauguration of the President." One of Houdini's most spectacular illusions was the "Vanishing Elephant," in which the pachyderm lumbered on to the stage and walked straight into a large cabinet. Almost simultaneously the cabinet's walls would be pulled back and the elephant had disappeared. Houdini said "Even the elephant does not know how it is done."

Masons and Magicians
In the world of professional stage magic, few names resonate with such acclaim as Harry Keller, Howard Thurston, Harry Houdini, Charles Carter, and Harry Blackstone, Sr. In addition to being brothers in the fraternity of American magicians, each was also an active Freemason. Nearly amazing as the magic acts these great illusionists are famous for is the fact that all of the great magicians made time in their busy lives for Freemasonry: Despite the extensive travel entailed in their careers and all the allurements to the vices of the world, each recognized the value of the Masonic brotherhood. An amusing anecdote related to Bro. Keller's Masonic membership was when he was shipwrecked in the Bay of Biscay and his Blue Lodge diploma went to the bottom of the sea. It was later recovered by divers who brought up baggage from the sunken steamer. Bro. Keller later remarked it had been viewed by Grand Master Neptune and returned. Bro. Howard Thurston (1869-1936) was initiated in Manitou Lodge No. 106, New York City, on July 22, 1907. He received the 32° in New York City on July 10, 1910, and later became a Noble of New York's Mecca Shrine Temple (Mecca is the first and oldest Shrine Temple, having been established in 1871 by actor Bro. William J. "Billy" Florence, Bro. Dr. Walter M. Fleming, and others). During Thurston's stage show, he was known to say, "pronounce the magic word ‘Hiram Abif’ and the rooster and the duck will change places." Through this patter, he prepared his audience to be amazed and, also let his Masonic Brothers know that a fellow Freemason was on the stage.

March 24 ~  Key That Sets Me Free Houdini: Master of Illusion
M y mind is the k e y that s e t s me free ~ Harry Houdini A man who dedicated his life to inspiring freedom of the mind, Harry Houdini (1874-1926), the world's most famous escape artist and illusionist, was born Ehrich Weiss on this day in Budapest, Hungary. Searching for a better life, his family moved to the U.S. in 1878. He changed his name to honor Jean-Eugene Robert-Houdin, considered the father of modern magic. At first a card-trick performer, by 1900 Houdini developed his first escape act. "Treat me," he once advised, "as you would the most dangerous of the criminal insane." The 5'5" artist trained hard to develop physical stamina and dexterity. He was able to escape from any restraint chains, handcuffs, prison cells, padlocked underwater boxes. Anything. He dazzled. He amazed. He became an international star. A reviewer called him "the most mysterious and wonderful entertainer the world has ever seen." Self-confident with a flair for exaggeration, Houdini made things appear larger than life, creating things magical and teaching the amazing transforming power of the imagination "I have tried through many sleepless nights to invent schemes to make an audience appreciate some worthy effort of mine," he said and bequeathed his library of magic to the Library of Congress

Secret of Harry Houdini's Magic
About a possible solution to the magic of Harry Houdini.
Houdini's Secret Harry Houdini (1874-1926) was the best-known magician of the 20th century. He was famous, said Encyclopaedia Britannica, for his "daring feats of extrication from shackles, ropes, and handcuffs and from various locked containers. . . . In a typical act he was shackled with irons and placed in a box that was locked, roped, and weighted. The box was submerged from a boat, to which he returned after freeing himself underwater." The big mystery, in all of Houdini's stunts, was how did he free himself? How did he escape every time? Suffering an accident that would lead to his death, Houdini was rushed to a hospital in Detroit. One of our readers was present. She may have the solution to the great Houdini mystery. Here is her contribution. From: LOU NITZBERG (Pleasant Ridge, Mich.) I was the scrub nurse for Dr. J. B. Kennedy when he operated on Houdini. Then, after the surgery, I was the floor nurse. Mr. Houdini had very thick black hair and in it he kept a long metal spindle. Another one fitted into the callous part of his foot. They were probably used to help open locks, etc.

Curse of the Pharaoh End-of-the-World Prophecies Index ... Z At long last we're able to get this Encyclopedia up online. It's created with David Joffe 's dictionary compilation software TshwaneLex , and it's a labor of love on the part of my good friend Gilles-Maurice de Schryver . We are very grateful for their generous donation of talent, time, and dedication. Thank you, folks. When I decided to place the entire text of "An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural" on the Internet, it was suggested to me that this could cut into the sales of the printed version. However, experience has shown that, in the publishing business, making a book available on the Internet only stimulates sales of the actual book! Another mystery. As with all of my books, I dropped in a few jokes. I had a hard time getting these jokes accepted by St. Martin's Press, the original publishers. However, now that it's on the Internet, I not only can make sure that the full force of my wit is felt, but I can add new ones in response to my latest whims. Seriously, if you find errors here, I urge you to notify me and they will be promptly corrected. I must tell you that there is also a UK edition of this book, titled, "The Supernatural, A to Z." It was very interesting for me to compare the two editions, especially in view of the differing "sense of humor" we find in the UK. As an example, in the entry under "
