103. The Classic Text: Homer
Homer The Classic Text Traditions and Interpretations Most recently is James Joyce s Ulysses which revisits Homer s Odyssey in a nineteenth century
http://www.uwm.edu/Library/special/exhibits/clastext/clspg023.htm
B ecause the facts of Homer's life when he was born or died, where he lived, who he was remain unknown and shall most likely never be known, many scholars have doubted the existence of a "Homer" and point to his texts as the work of a collection of authors over a long period of time. This criticism stems from a disbelief that epics such as The Iliad and The Odyssey could have been formulated, maintained, and transmitted within an oral culture. However, new research on human memory and careful analysis of text reveals evidence that the textual style of each poem does emanate from one author. N o matter who wrote The Iliad and The Odyssey , we can assume that the texts which survive today are not as they were originally composed. Aside from actual textual emendations, the language changed over time, including the introduction of Attic forms and the replacement of archaic terms and usages, all done slowly over time. W hile popular throughout the classical period, The Iliad and The Odyssey lost their popularity during the medieval period until Petrarch received a Homerian manuscript in 1354. Petrarch was probably the first to conceive the idea of a complete translation of Homer into Latin; and it was on his initiative and at his expense that Leontius Pilatus, who was for that purpose installed in Boccaccio's house in Florence, rendered both The Iliad and The Odyssey into Latin prose. Crude and imperfect as these translations were, they acquainted the Italian humanists for the first time with the world of Homer; and they greatly influenced all later translations for more than a hundred years to come. Complete English translations did not appear until the very end of the sixteenth century.

Castellaneta, Dan - voice of Homer Simpson
By: Dominick A. Miserandino Besides being the voice of Homer Simpson, Dan has acted in dozens of plays, movies and television shows ranging from Tracey Ullman to being the voice of the Genie in television's Aladdin to being a member of Chicago's Second City. The list of voices and characters he's done goes on and on, but the man who created them all is always down to earth. DM) I received the newest album called, "I'm not Homer". Why did you choose that title? DC) I just thought it would be a funny parody of the famous Leonard Nimoy book, "I Am Not Spock", plus most of the comedy is not the typical Homer comedy.

The Greek Poet Homer

There has been a great deal of controversy about the identity of Homer. He is the author credited with "writing" (or creating) the two great epics from ancient Greek civilization: the Iliad and the Odyssey . Scholars debated (and some still do) for decades about whether there was an actual man known as Homer, or if instead the pair of epic poems were composed over time, by a series of storytellers, and were eventually written down. Although this is a fascinating issue, as it reveals that the Greeks were at one point a primarily oral society, the question itself is essentially moot. The fact is these two stories are profoundly moving tales of the heroic and legendary aspirations of the Greek people. Whether they were created by a single individual or by an anonymous collective makes no difference in the end. Controversy aside, there is no question that both the Iliad and the Odyssey had a deep and far-reaching effect on the legends and myths of the ancient Greeks. Some of the most renowned characters of mythology play roles in either one or both of these epics: Achilles, Ajax, Agamemnon, Menelaus, Helen, Paris, Hector, Odysseus, Penelope, etc. are all vividly portrayed. They are heroes and heroines, but they are also human, with flaws and foibles like the rest of us. The Greek gods and goddesses also take active parts in the stories, and it is in the

To Homer Standing aloof in giant ignorance,
Of thee I hear and of the Cyclades,
As one who sits ashore and longs perchance
To visit dolphin-coral in deep seas.
So thou wast blind;but then the veil was rent,
For Jove uncurtain'd Heaven to let thee live,
And Neptune made for thee a spumy tent,
And Pan made sing for thee his forest-hive; Aye on the shores of darkness there is light, And precipices show untrodden green, There is a budding morrow in midnight, There is a triple sight in blindness keen; Such seeing hadst thou, as it once befel To Dian, Queen of Earth, and Heaven, and Hell.
