43. Homer's Open Source Odyssey 2001: Classical Computing And A Brief History Of Ope
Elliot McGucken discusses classical computing and provides a brief history of open source.

Homer's Open Source Odyssey 2001: Classical Computing and a Brief History of Open Source: (On Patents, Trademarks, and Business Principles)
By Elliot McGucken
Today we are continuing along on the same open-source journey Homer set out upon three thousand years ago, when he shared the words of The Odyssey with an audience and enriched them with the knowledge of a classic's ineffable truths. The story was passed along from generation to generation as part of an oral tradition for a few hundred of years, before it was transcribed around 700 BC. The invention of the printing press and movable type by Gutenberg circa 1445 aided in the sharing of classical information, and suddenly the Bible, as well as works such as The Odyssey , found a far greater audience. With the advent of the Internet the content and the audience have augmented vastly. And of even greater significance, with the new paradigms afforded by information technology, classical computing has joined the ranks of immortal art, science, and literature. In the past few years, we have played witness to a revolutionary era of humanity's cultural journey, wherein technology and ideas have merged in a brave new digital world, rendering knowledge as affordable as it is eternal. Software is labor immortalized, as a programmer's algorithm, once written, may continue to function for eternity. Thus now, in addition to inheriting the cultural riches of our predecessors, we may also inherit the functionality of their programs. In a world where commerce is defined by the movement of information, that machinerythe hardware and softwarewhich moves the information embodies work, and thus the innovations of one's predecessors will not only bestow aesthetic riches, but they shall also provide a wellspring of eternal labor. A hundred years from now Hamlet shall still be contemplating the correct course of action, and the Linux kernel, along with Apache, shall still be providing the fundamental labor which transports Hamlet all about the watery globe.

I wish i wish i wish this fricking cold would be done. Anyone need some extra mucuous? Cause I'm a ready and willing donor.
Go wish Sam a Happy Birthday. He was the very first blogger I met and let me tell you, he's a charmer. His boyfriend Jeff is a sweet guy too.
Work has suddenly gotten busy again. I'm looking at a bunch of interesting projects. Yeah! A busy Homer is a happy Homer.
Speaking of which, I have to scrub the boring old Saturn tomorrow. It is getting so bad I could perform an archaeological dig inside it.

Cripes, I'm in a bad mood. Post-vacation blahs. A head cold. Watching the news this morning. A stupid decision while I was at home. Not-so-hypothetical question- which is worse? A). Not going to see a close relative because of the expected/usual unpleasantness, or B). the guilt factor when you find out they were 'hurt' because you didn't go see them?
The hurricane is endlessly depressing. So much of the bullshit didn't have to happen. A mixture of imcompetence, racial injustice, and more incompetence. We had a group of people arrive by plane yesterday here in Tucson. Some were forced out of their never-flooded homes at gunpoint by the authorities. Most were forced to leave their pets behind to starve to death. This is America?

L’Odissea fragment

Study Guide for Homer's Odyssey
updated 31 January 2002 By Robin Mitchell-Boyask , Temple University. These materials are intended for the fair use of all students and teachers. Any links should be duly credited to the author, and students should always cite in papers any help this guide has given them. Note that the Perseus links for character information are not current. If you click on names you will need to type the character name into the Encyclopedia search window Have you seen the new Epic Page? It includes wealth of on-line materials on Ancient Epic. References will be to pages, not line numbers, in Robert Fagles' translation. Important names, ideas or words are underlined, indicating hyperlinks to further information. When using the hyperlinks you must remember that you will often read variants in the myths which Homer uses; try to figure out which departures are significant and which myths help you understand the Homeric versions better. There is an on-line text with hyperlinks for more extensive study.

Her catalogue is a landmark in Homer studies. It puts Homer in his true relationship to illustration, to other American art and to the European and English examples he followed, from Ruskin to Millet ; its vivacity of argument matches that of the paintings. Cooper has brought together some two hundred watercolors-almost a third of Homer's known output. It is a wholly delectable show, and it makes clear why watercolor, in its special freshness and immediacy, gave Homer access to moments of vision he did not have in the weightier, slower diction of oils. "You will see, in the future I will live by my watercolors," Homer once remarked, and he was almost right. He came to the medium late: he was thirty-seven and a mature artist. A distinct air of the Salon, of the desire for a "major" utterance that leads to an overworked surface, clings to some of the early watercolors-in particular, the paintings of
