Holmes, Oliver Wendell (1809-1894)
Beware how you take away hope from another human being. Don't be consistent but be simply true. It is by no means certain that our individual personality is the single inhabitant of these our corporeal frames... We all do things both awake and asleep which surprise us. Perhaps we have cotenants in this house we live in. One's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions. Pretty much all the honest truth-telling there is in the world is done by children. Sin has many tools, but a lie is the handle that fits them all. The mode by which the inevitable comes to pass is effort. To have doubted one's own first principles is the mark of a civilized man. Youth fades; love droops, the leaves of friendship fall; A mother's secret hope outlives them all.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr
“Everybody wants to have a hand in a great discovery. All I will do is to give you a hint or two as to names—or the name—to be applied to the state produced and the agent. The state should, I think, be called ‘Anaesthesia’ (from the Greek word anaisthesia, ‘lack of sensation’). This signifies insensibility.... The adjective will be ‘Anaesthetic’. Thus we might say the state of Anaesthesia, or the Anaesthetic state.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes

Biography of Oliver Wendell Holmes
Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809 - 1894)
Oliver Wendell Holmes the elder, (August 29, 1809 – October 8, 1894) was a physician by profession but achieved fame as a writer; he was one of the best regarded American poets of the 19th century. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the son of a minister. He was educated at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and at Harvard University. He first attained national prominence with his poem "Old Ironsides" about the 18th century battleship USS Constitution, which was to be broken up for scrap; the poem generated public sentiment that resulted in the historic ship being preserved as a monument. He went to Paris for three years to study medicine, then returned to get his doctorate at Harvard in 1836, the same year the first book of his verse was published. He then became a professor of anatomy and physiology at Dartmouth College. He was a contributor of essays and poems to the Atlantic Monthly from its inception, and also published novels. His son was Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
