Old Ironsides
Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)
"Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!"
Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!
Long has it waved on high,
And many an eye has danced to see
That banner in the sky;
Beneath it rung the battle shout,
And burst the cannon's roar;
The meteor of the ocean air
Shall sweep the clouds no more. Her deck, once red with heroes' blood,
Where knelt the vanquished foe, When winds were hurrying o'er the flood, And waves were white below, No more shall feel the victor's tread, Or know the conquered knee; The harpies of the shore shall pluck The eagle of the sea! Oh, better that her shattered hulk Should sink beneath the wave; Her thunders shook the mighty deep, And there should be her grave; Nail to the mast her holy flag, Set every threadbare sail

The Chambered Nautilus
Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)
"This is the ship of pearl, which, poets feign..."
This is the ship of pearl, which, poets feign,
Sail the unshadowed main,
The venturous bark that flings
On the sweet summer wind its purpled wings
In gulfs enchanted, where the Siren sings,
And coral reefs lie bare,
Where the cold sea-maids rise to sun their streaming hair. Its webs of living gauze no more unfurl;
Wrecked is the ship of pearl!
And every chambered cell, Where its dim dreaming life was wont to dwell, As the frail tenant shaped his growing shell, Before thee lies revealed, Its irised ceiling rent, its sunless crypt unsealed! Year after year beheld the silent toil That spread his lustrous coil; Still, as the spiral grew, He left the past year's dwelling for the new

Ancestry and Childhood.
Like Emerson and Lowell, Holmes was a typical representative of what he himself termed the "Brahmin caste" of New England. arMenu1[9] = '1Elsie Venner, chap. i.'; His father, a descendant of one of the early settlers of Connecticut, was Rev. Abiel Holmes, for forty years a minister in Cambridge, and an author of some note. The poet's mother, Sarah Wendell Holmes, whom he closely resembled in slightness of figure and vivacity of spirits, was a lineal descendant of Governor Bradstreet and his wife, Anne, best remembered for her poetical gifts and celebrated in her generation as the Tenth Muse. arMenu2[9] = '2Tenth Muse.'; His great-grandmother was the Dorothy Quincy whose portrait is so charmingly presented in the poem Dorothy Q . Wendell Phillips was his cousin. The poet was born at Cambridge, August 29, 1809, in a picturesque gambrel-roofed house on the edge of the Harvard campus. arMenu3[9] = '3Described in The Poet at the Breakfast-Table, first paper.'; His earliest literary explorations were, like those of Lowell, associated with his father's study, where, as he says, he "bumped about among books," from the time when he was hardly taller than one of his father's folios.

the last leaf
by Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894) I saw him once before,
As he passed by the door,
And again
The pavement stones resound,
As he totters o'er the ground
With his cane. They say that in his prime,
Ere the pruning-knife of Time
Cut him down,
Not a better man was found
By the Crier on his round
Through the town. But now he walks the streets, And looks at all he meets Sad and wan, And he shakes his feeble head, That it seems as if he said, "They are gone." The mossy marbles rest On the lips that he has prest In their bloom, And the names he loved to hear Have been carved for many a year On the tomb. My grandmamma has said Poor old lady, she is dead Long ago That he had a Roman nose, And his cheek was like a rose In the snow; But now his nose is thin, And it rests upon his chin Like a staff, And a crook is in his back, And a melancholy crack In his laugh. Joseph Warren, M.D.
Trained in the holy art whose lifted shield
Wards off the darts a never-slumbering foe,
By hearth and wayside lurking, waits to throw.
Oppression taught his helpful arm to wield
The slayer's weapon: on the murderous field
The fiery bolt he challenged laid him low,
Seeking its noblest victim. Even so
The charter of a nation must be sealed!
The healer's brow the hero's honours crowned,
From lowliest duty called to loftiest deed.
Living, the oak-leaf wreath his temples bound;
Dying, the conqueror's laurel was his meed,
Last on the broken ramparts' turf to bleed
Where Freedom's victory in defeat was found. June 11th, 1876 (Text from American Sonnets

Famous Quotes By: Holmes, Oliver Wendell 1809-1894 American Author Wit Poet
People who honestly mean to be true really contradict themselves much more rarely than those who try to be consistent.
Holmes, Oliver Wendell
Contradiction

Speak not too well of one who scarce will know himself transfigured in its roseate glow; Say kindly of him what is, chiefly, true, remembering always he belongs to you; Deal with him as a truant, if you will, But claim him, keep him, call him brother still!
Holmes, Oliver Wendell
Brotherhood

A great calamity is as old as the trilobites an hour after it has happened.
Holmes, Oliver Wendell
Disasters

The freeman, casting with unpurchased hand the vote that shakes the turrets of the land. Holmes, Oliver Wendell Democracy What a comfort a dull but kindly person is, to be sure, at times! A ground-glass shade over a gas-lamp does not bring more solace to our dazzled eyes than such a one to our minds. Holmes, Oliver Wendell Dullness Even the wisest woman you talk to is ignorant of something you may know, but an elegant woman never forgets her elegance. Holmes, Oliver Wendell
