The Romantic Period, 1820-1860: Essayists and Poets: Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)
Index Oliver Wendell Holmes, a celebrated physician and professor of anatomy and physiology at Harvard, is the hardest of the three well-known Brahmins to categorize because his work is marked by a refreshing versatility. It encompasses collections of humorous essays (for example, The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table , 1858), novels ( Elsie Venner , 1861), biographies ( Ralph Waldo Emerson , 1885), and verse that could be sprightly ("The Deacon's Masterpiece, or, The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay"), philosophical ("The Chambered Nautilus"), or fervently patriotic ("Old Ironsides"). Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the suburb of Boston that is home to Harvard, Holmes was the son of a prominent local minister. His mother was a descendant of the poet Anne Bradstreet. In his time, and more so thereafter, he symbolized wit, intelligence, and charm not as a discoverer or a trailblazer, but rather as an exemplary interpreter of everything from society and language to medicine and human nature.
Holmes was the father of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr

My father was very familiar with the sailing ship, Old Ironsides , and we went to see it when he visited me when I was living in Boston. The timber for that ship came from Liberty County, Georgia, and of course it was Abiel's son and Justice Holmes' father the doctor who wrote the famous poem ``Old Ironsides'' which helped organize the preservation of the ship.

Old Ironsides
By Oliver Wendell Holmes
September 16, 1830 Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!
Long has it waved on high,
And many an eye has danced to see
That banner in the sky;
Beneath it rung the battle shout,
And burst the cannon's roar; The meteor of the ocean air Shall sweep the clouds no more. Her deck, once red with heroes' blood, Where knelt the vanquished foe, When winds were hurrying o'er the flood, And waves were white below, No more shall feel the victor's tread, Or know the conquered knee; The harpies of the shore shall pluck The eagle of the sea! Oh, better that her shattered bulk

However, the Holmes family was of the same general group of Puritans in Mass. as the Ways and others of the Midway group Justice Holmes' grandfather Rev. Abiel Holmes was pastor of Midway Congregational Church from 1785 to 1791; then he was pastor in Cambridge, Mass., for 40 years. That latter period, 1791-1831, overlapped with the period, 1823-1849, that Rev. Robert Quarterman was pastor at Midway. Hm, that leads to an interesting question. I wonder if the Cambridge church preserved any correspondence between them? The Holmes family, which mostly resided in Woodstock Connecticut, is also part of the Connecticut connection. As late as the Justice's father's generation there was active communication between the Midway people and some descendants of the other branch of the Dorchester Mass. church that had moved to Windsor, Conn.

Oliver Wendell Holmes
At once a well-known and easily mistaken identity, this name has meaning for the literary, legal, and medical communities the world over. This page is offered as a starting point for those who would like to know more of the Oliver Wendell Holmeses, the family, and their works. A brief introduction will be useful. Let's start from a point just about two hundred years ago, with a minister of religion (who was also an author) named Abiel Holmes (1763-1837). His second wife, Sarah Wendell, and he had five children: Mary, Ann, Sarah, Oliver and John. This first Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894), doubtless somewhat influenced by family precedent, became a physician. He also became a writer , and was much in demand as a speaker. Doctor Oliver Wendell Holmes married Amelia Lee Jackson when he was thirty. They had three children: Oliver Wendell, Jr. (1841-1935), Amelia Jackson Holmes, and Edward Jackson Holmes.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, M.D., 1809-1894 s we approach the 158th anniversary of the use of sulfuric ether by William T.G. Morton at the Massachusetts General Hospital to produce insensibility during surgery, it is appropriate to remember that only 36 days after this seminal event, the eminent Boston physician and poet Oliver Wendell Holmes (Sr.) in a letter to Morton dated November 21, 1846, proposed a name to describe this most peculiar state of mind. This was considered by many to be the greatest contribution to the world of practical medicine originating in America.

Oliver Wendell Holmes : Contagiousness Of Puerperal Fever, 1843
Introductory Note Oliver Wendell Holmes was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, August 29, 1809, and educated at Phillips Academy, Andover, and Harvard College. After graduation, he entered the Law School, but soon gave up law for medicine. He studied first in Boston, and later spent two years in medical schools in Europe, mainly in Paris. On his return he began to practise in Boston, but in two years he was appointed professor of anatomy at Dartmouth College, a position which he held from 1838 to 1840, when he again took up his Boston practice. It was soon after this, in 1843, that he published his essay on the "Contagiousness of Puerperal Fever," his only contribution of high distinction to medical science. From 1847 to 1882 he was Parkman professor of anatomy and physiology in the Harvard Medical School. He died in Boston, October 7, 1894. In spite of the importance of the paper here printed, Holmes' reputation as a scientist was overshadowed by that won by him as a wit and a man of letters. When he was only twenty-one his "Old Ironsides" brought him into notice; and through his poetry and fiction, and the sparkling talk of the "Breakfast Table" series, he took a high place among the most distinguished group of writers that America has yet produced.
