Part I
[Transcribed by Jane Devlin]

[Transcriber's note: Because the original is a typescript rather than a printed book, there are inheriant problems familiar to anyone who has ever used a manual typewriter. Some letters are illegible because of ink filling in the character so that it is only a blob. Other letters, especially the capital letters at the beginnings of names are "raised" because the shift key wasn't held far enough down to register the entire letter, and some pages even look like carbon copies rather than originals. Where the uneven type made it impossible to decipher the letters, I've either put the most likely numbers or letters along with alternates (ie: 1876 (5? 8?)) or used underscores ( ) rather than guess.
Also, this set of records has a number in which two surnames are given for women and I have transcribed them as given. In some cases, the record will actually state that the woman was the daughter in one family and the wife in the other, but given the tendancy at the time of using a family surname as the middle name for a baby girl, I would personally be a little suspicious of the records that do not make the "daughter of ...., wife of ...." connections and look for additional confirmation of a maiden name. jd.]

These two cemeteries are to the ordinary observer in the same yard. I was told there used to be a fence showing the dividing line, but there is none there at the present time. The division could not be told by the names either, for the same ones were close to both churches. The Episcopal Church was struck by lightning on 12 Sep 1912 and burned to the ground. - j.c.f.

In some cases, the people listed below had many more children, but for the sake of clarity, some have been omitted. Unless indicated otherwise, children are from a person's first marriage. In many cases, two individuals may be related in multiple ways, even if only one path is depicted. These relationships are shown for illustrative purposes only and are by no means exhaustive. Captains of 1847 1) Capt. John William Bewley: party consisted of 36 wagons when it started out. Left Independence, MO on May 7, 1847. Capt. Bewley was elected the permanent Captain after a shakedown period of several days. Included in the party were the Isaac Bewley family, the Prettymans, the Youngs, and the Victor Wallace family. Several days out of Independence they were joined by a train of 35 wagons from Oskaloosa and a party of American Fur Company trappers bound for the Lakes. Five months and three days after leaving Independence they had their first view of the Columbia. On Oct 10, 1847 they camped at the mouth of the Umatilla and the next morning the party began to separate and follow different paths. Some of the members of the train chose to go to the Whitman Mission where they became embroiled in the Whitman Massacre [follow the links under Missionaries to learn more about this event]
