In addition, she chronicled the homely events and hard work that set the rhythm of life for country women as the local color writers of New England did. Like Stowe, Jewett, and Freeman, Holley re-created the voices and manners peculiar to her fictive landscape, in this case Jonesville, New York. Taking the notion of home-centeredness and the plot and character conventions that the domestic novelists had used, Holley turned it to her own purposes by showing the failure of gentility to provide a safe, satisfying life for women, and she melded three American literary traditions in a way no other writer had: the attention to regional detail of the local colorists merges with the conventions of the domestic novelists and the vernacular comedy developed by earlier humorists.
Holley used humor for a new end: to make accessible and palatable the ideals of the temperance and suffrage movements. Whereas the earlier comedians had made the woman—particularly the woman's rights advocate—the butt of their comedy, Holley created characters of both genders who embodied the absurdities of anti-suffrage and intemperance. Her early work was enormously popular with a wide audience, including reformers such as Susan B. Anthony and Frances Willard, who sought her support. Holley was often invited to address audiences, including the U.S. Congress, but because of her intense shyness and a slight speech impediment, she always declined. "Samantha Allen, Josiah Allen's Wife," spoke for her.

Marietta Holley (18361926) Every year at traditional gift-giving holidays, mymother got me a book in the Samantha series written by Josiah Allen s Wife
http://www.slaveindvstries.net/phallus/holley.html
Marietta Holley (1836-1926):
Every year at traditional gift-giving holidays, my mother got me a book in the Samantha series written by "Josiah Allen's Wife." Initially, I put the books aside thinking that they were just quaint old books about married life at the turn of the century but one day, for reasons I am unable to recall, I picked up Samantha Among the Brethren . I was astonished to find that the character was feisty and challenging, a supporter of what some call "sensible" women's rights. Holley is frequently compared to Mark Twain both in her use of vernacular and not-so-subtle sarcasm. Born in upstate New York in 1836, Holley never married, choosing instead to pursue writing as a career and remain a spinster until death. She used her Samantha books to question the status quo and poke fun at popular social opinions.
"She raised questions concerning history's treatment of women and their powerlessness before the law. She insisted that a woman, upon marriage, gave up control of her body, her property, her wages, even her personal possessions. She was not allowed to testify in court, sue, contract, hold title to property, sign papers as a witness, or establish businesses. A wife's will had to be signed by her husband in order to be legal. Husbands, even proven drunkards, had control of children after a divorce and were generally able to secure a divorce on broader grounds than were women."

PROGRESS MADE VISIBLE
INSPIRED BY THE WORLD'S FAIRS
World's Fairs have been used as settings or themes for numerous works of fiction, film, and music. The Fair may be merely a colorful background for a romance or adventure or it may be a key element in the plot. Visiting a World's Fair may motivate a writer to develop his or her own utopian city. For example, the Emerald City of Oz was inspired by Baum's visit to the "White City" at the Columbian Exposition. The books shown here are merely a selection; others range from The Education of Henry Adams to the Elvis Presley film It Happened at the World's Fair. Frances Hodgson Burnett, 1849-1924.

GERSTENBERG, ALICE. Unquenched Fire, A Novel by Alice Gerstenberg. Boston: Small, Maynard and Company, Publishers, [1912.] 417p. Jane Carrington, daughter of a Chicago millionaire, becomes dissatisfied with the limitations of Chicago society and decides to try life in the theatre. Success comes to her on the New York stage, bringing with it the problem of coping with her explosive temperament and moods. Only the first portion of Unquenched Fire is set in Chicago, and that portion does not hold the sparkle, the interest, or the insight which becomes apparent as the story progresses.
