James Hogg
Come, all ye jolly shepherd lads that whistle thro' the glen
I'll tell ye all a secret that the courtiers dinnae ken
What is the greatest bliss that the tongue o' man can name
Is tae woo a bonnie lassie when the kye come hame Chorus (after each verse):
When the kye come hame
When the kye come hame
'Tween the gloamin' and the mirk When the kye come hame 'Tis no' beneath the burgenet, nor yet beneath the crown It's no' on couch of velvet, nor yet on bed of down It's beneath the spreading birch in the dell without a name Wi' a bonnie, bonnie lassie when the kye come hame See yonder pawky shepherd lad that lingers on the hill His sheep are in the fauld, and his lambs are lying still But he daurnae gang tae bed for his heart is in a flame To meet his bonnie lassie when the kye come hame Awa' wi' fame and fortune, what comfort can it gie?

104. Scottish Flotsam From The Shetland Islands - People, Scottish Kings, Quotes, And
But O, her artless smile s mair sweet, Than hinny or than marmalete. JamesHogg (17701835), My Love She s But a Lassie Yet
http://www.scottishradiance.com/flotsam/flotsam1201.htm
I imagine the first question anyone will ask is what is a column called "Scottish Flotsam". I guess we will have to begin with what is "flotsam". Among the definitions of the word are "things washed ashore" or "miscellaneous trifles". Well, we believe you can find some great treasure on the ocean shore. But you will never know what you will find or its value. So we decided that is what this column is - flotsam. We wanted a place to put things that didn't fit anywhere else and might be of interest. Each item could be a column itself and might be some day but for now it will be the flotsam, which washes our way. Now lets look at a Scottish King: Duncan I (1034-40) Duncan was the first of the royal House of Dunkeld. He added Strathclyde to his grandfather's kingdom, thereby being the first monarch of a united Scotland. The hereditary right to the throne of his two sons, Malcolm Canmore and Donald Ban was threatened by his cousin Macbeth who claimed the kingdom on the grounds of tanistry. The matter was settled in 1040 near Elgin when Macbeth killed Duncan in battle. Source: http://www.nwlink.com/~scotlass/houseof.htm
