Academic Predators, Poseurs, and Heroes in Three New Academic Novels
By ELAINE SHOWALTER
When literature professors, especially English professors, write novels, they tend to write about what they know best: other people's books. Even in some of the most celebrated and familiar academic satires, rewriting literary conventions is as important as mocking campus attitudes.
In Small World, for example, David Lodge used the structure of the romantic quest as the basis for his comic view of jet-setting conference junketeers, BOOKS DISCUSSED IN THIS ESSAY

Lucchesi and the Whale by Frank Lentricchia (Duke University Press, 2001) and, in Nice Work, he played off the English industrial novel to describe the tensions between the modern university and the business world. Academic insiders often read these novels very differently from civilians. We know the in-jokes, the real-life figures being caricatured, the places and headlines being skewered; and we can identify and enjoy the literary references, the critical allusions, and the generic twists. Thus, while outsiders may read the novels for story, entertainment, and message, academics and others familiar with literary canons and scholarly trends will also decipher them as forms of literary criticism or literary celebration.

Learning Journeys James Hogg Biography James Hogg was born in 1770, claiming the same birth-date as Robert Burns (25th January), and lived and worked most of his life in the Scottish Borders. He attended school only briefly, mainly because when he was seven, his father, tenant farmer Robert Hogg, was declared bankrupt, and the young James took work as a cow-herd to supplement his family’s income. There were two main strands to Hogg’s early cultural experience: folk traditions and religion. The family were church-goers and his father was an elder, while his mother was steeped in the oral tradition, relating to her children folk tales and songs of kings, knights and supernatural beings. As a young man Hogg worked as a shepherd in Selkirkshire and Dumfriesshire, becoming interested in literature in his early twenties, when he attempted writing songs and poems, some of which were published in The Scots Magazine. He moved to Edinburgh in 1810 to pursue a career as a full-time man of letters, after having published poetry and non-fiction while maintaining his day-job as a shepherd. However, in 1813 he returned to Selkirkshire, where he lived and worked in the Duke of Buccleuch's Altrive Farm in Yarrow. He continued to publish regularly while maintaining a contentious relationship with the Edinburgh literati, including his friend and some-time mentor, Walter Scott.

Born in 1770 to a poor farming family, Hogg began to help with shepherding as a child. In the 1790s he was employed at Yarrow by Willie Laidlaw's father, and began to read and educate himself. A growing enthusiasm for Scottish poetry led to the publication of his dialect Scottish Pastorals in 1801, and to the friendship of Sir Walter Scott , whom he encountered over the Minstrelsy. In later years he published a number of volumes of verse, encouraged by Scott, and in 1824 his masterpiece, The private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. His popularity as a poet was due in part to his background as a shepherd, but this is his only professional treatise, about sheep, their care and diseases. It received a prize from the Highland Society. The surname of 'the Ettrick Shepherd' might be suppposed by English and American readers to have to do with pigs. In fact theword ' hog' in Scotland and parts of England, and as used in this book ('Of the Diseases of Hoggs, or young Sheep'), denotes a sheep older than a lamb but before its first shearing, and this probably reflects the ultimate derivation of the word (see OED).

James Hogg Collection
This collection of books and manuscripts was gifted to the University of Otago Library by the Gilkison family, who are related to James Hogg (1770-1835), the Ettrick poet. The collection is divided up into three: manuscripts works by Hogg , and works by others Although small in number, the manuscripts provide a small window in which to peer through at Hogg and his world. The letters from John G. Lockhart, Thomas Pringle, Anna Maria Hall, and Sir Walter Scott make interesting reading. As expected in such collections, there are later manuscripts that offer further details on Hogg and the family links. Apart from the remains of the Chaldee manuscript, which is registered as a de Beer manuscript, they were all owned by the Gilkison family.
Manuscripts Ms. letters to or about James Hogg. between 1820 and 1833. 8 sheets in an envelope.

John Graham of Claverhouse (1648 - 89)
Viscount Dundee - 'Bonnie Dundee'
Resulting from the reign of Charles I there was an attempt to suppress the Presbyterian style of religion and this led to opposition by those who were known as Covenanters. They were especially strong in the Moffat area and Southwest of Scotland. Claverhouse was sent by the Scottish Parliament to put down the Covenanters and he was posted to Moffat, setting up his lodgings at the Black Bull Inn.
This was a "bloody" time and anyone found to have taken part in the "blanket preachings" was under threat of severe punishment. This fight was finally won by the Covenanters in 1688, but Claverhouse remained loyal to the Jacobite cause. In a different location and in 1689 Claverhouse lead the Jacobites at Killiecrankie and although they won Claverhouse was mortally wounded.
Claverhouse was known by several names, the title 'Bonnie Dundee' is thought to have come from Sir Walter Scott's writings.

James Hogg- Famous Scots From Virtual Scotland
James Hogg- A Famous Scottish Poet James Hogg (1770 - 1835) was also known as the 'Ettrick Shepherd'. James Hogg was, indeed, a shepherd for much of his life, and was self-educated. His real training as a poet came from his fund of Scottish folk songs and legends, and it was largely in this tradition that he wrote. His work showed great interest in the supernatural side by side with holmely wisdom and racy language, and many of his songs are still well known. Of his narrative poems Kilmeny has lasted best. His outstanding work in prose was Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner in 1824. He contributed to numerous magazines, especially Blackwood's and from 1809-1811 edited The Spy , most of which he wrote himself. Back to : - Famous Scots

James Hogg
The Author
James Hogg, called the Ettrick Shepherd, novelist and poet, was born in Ettrick Forest, Selkirkshire in 1770. His father was a impoverished farmer and the boy had no formal education. At the age of 20 he became shepherd to a farmer for ten years. There he had access to books and began to write. In 1801 he published his collection of Scottish pastorals and poems. In 1802 he met Walter Scott, and their interest in traditional ballads led to a lifelong friendship. After various misfortunes as a farmer he moved to Edinburgh in 1810. There he started a literary magazine which folded after a year. His growing reputation as a poet led to friendships with De Qunicey, Wordsworth and Byron. In 1816 the Countess of Dalkeith bequeathed him a farm where he lived for the rest of his life until his death in 1835.
