The Antonine Wall, dating from Roman times. The ditch of this wall can be seen in Callander Park, and is still 6 - 10 feet deep. Callendar House, seat of the Livingstone family from the 14th to the 18th century, now a museum. The Parish Church, where lies buried Sir John de Graeme, follower of Wallace, who was killed at the battle of Falkirk in 1298. There is also a memorial to the Battle of Falkirk in January, 1746 - the last Jacobite victory before the defeat of Culloden. Falkland Palace - Fife
The Royal Palace built between 1501 and 1541, was the country residence of eight Stuart monarchs; including Mary, Queen of Scots, and her son James VI, who used to hunt here frequently. The renaissance building includes the beautiful Chapel Royal surrounded by internationally renowned gardens. The Royal Tennis Court, reputedly the worlds oldest, is still used today. Flora MacDonald's Grave - Skye
On the Uig-Staffin road, 25 miles north of Portree. A 10ft-high Celtic cross supported against the wind, high on the ridge overlooking the Uists from whence she came. Long after the legendary journey, her funeral in 1790 attracted the biggest crowd since Culloden. The present memorial replaced the original, which was chipped away by souvenir hunters. Dubious though the whole business may have been, she still helped to shape the folklore of the Highlands. Fort William - Lochaber
Fort William derives its name from the military fort built by William of Orange to station English Redcoat soldiers. They were garrisoned here to control the Jacobite Highlanders in the 1700s. Today, Fort William is a bustling town at the foot of Ben Nevis by the shore of Loch Linnhe, a deep sea loch.

The theme of the split personality, the alter ego of every individual, weaves its way through Douglas Gordon’s work.
Each of the three levels of the exhibition addresses a different, many-faceted perspective of the perception of the events. On the first floor the focus of our attention is on reading. In the reconstructed industrial-age printer’s shop replete with offset printing press the private notes of the justified sinner are printed daily page for page before the eyes of the visitors. Douglas Gordon’s handwritten version of the memoirs serve as the manuscript, allowing the artist, as it were, to slip into the role of the killer.
The second floor is dedicated to listening. A star-shaped room shuts out the architecture of the building thus completely blocking out reality as well. In an enclosed space illuminated solely by black light the visitor hears the voice of the alleged killer and the story of the young man caught in his dilemma.
On the third floor the visitor is expected to approach the work by visual channels. In absolute silence, confronted only by a filmic vis-à-vis, he watches the light-drenched, large-format film images projected on the front and back sides of a diaphanous screen.

William and Robert Chambers, Readings in English Poetry: A Collection of Specimens from our best Poets From A.D. 1558 to 1860, Chronologically Arranged with Biographical Notices and Explanatory Notes . (London and Edinburgh: William and Robert Chambers, 1865) Information about the collection: As the full title indicates, there are bio-critical headnotes for each author, with some bibliographic information as well. The contents of the volume are categorized and ordered in three different ways, as follows. The table of contents proper is followed by a "classified index of subjects," which contains these generic categories: sacred-moral-didactic; descriptive (the seasons, months, morning-night, natural phenomena, scenery, characters); historical; satirical; dramatic; miscellaneous narrative; miscellaneous lyrics (odes, songs); and sonnets. Following this is an alphabetical index of poets. There are quasi-baroque engravings of the dates that bound each chronological period before their respective sections in the volume. The names of authors in the TOC are in boldface, as you see here. The Preface: This volume, Readings in English Poetry, forms the poetical part of Readings in English Literature. The prose part is also published separately, under the title of Readings in English Prose. Both volumes are designed as Reading-Books for upper classes in Schools, while the complete work forms a suitable companion to such manuals as the

Robert Burns 1759-1796
Robert Burns was born near Ayr, Scotland, 25th of January, 1759. His father, though always extremely poor, sent him to school for three years in a neighbouring village, But it was to his father and to his own reading that he owed the more important part of his education and to have acquired a good knowledge of English, a reading knowledge of French, and a fairly wide acquaintance with the masterpieces of English literature. In 1766 his father rented the farm of Mount Oliphant, and in helping him with the farming work young Robert seems to have exceedingly exerted himself. In 1771 the family move to Lochlea, and Burns started to learn flax-dressing.
Burns' poetry falls into two main groups: English and Scottish. It is in Scottish poetry that he achieved triumphs of a quite extraordinary kind. Since the union of the crowns, the Scots dialect had largely fallen into disuse as a literary medium. Shortly before Burns' time, Allan Ramsay and Robert Fergusson had initiated a revival of the vernacular which Burns succeeded in carrying to its highest pitch, becoming thereby, the poet of his people par excellence.
He first showed complete mastery of verse in the field of satire. In some poems, he manifested sympathy with the protest of the so-called "New Light" party, opposed to the extreme Calvinism and intolerance of the dominant " Auld Lichts", such contributing to the theological liberation of Scotland.

Connie Braton Meek
The Three Perils Of Man: War, Women And Witchcraft, by James Hogg (1822) IMAGINE a world inhabited by brownies, kelpies, and bogles, and you’ve imagined the legendary and mysterious Borders area of Scotland. Throw in a couple of giants, a demon or two, some courtly love, and a very large measure of satire, and you’ve got James Hogg’s epic novel The Three Perils of Man. Perhaps best known for his supernatural character study Confessions of a Justified Sinner, Hogg (1770-1835), a native of the Borders, drew much of his inspiration from the ballads and folktales learned at his mother’s knee. The Three Perils combines elements of romance, fantasy, and the small-group adventure we have come to know well from epics such as The Lord of the Rings, but Hogg’s novel predated Tolkien’s works by well over a hundred years. The English have seized the Castle of Roxburgh. It’s all just a game between English and Scottish nobles, but Sir Ringan Redhough knows the political implications of the contest. To help him decide which side to join, he sends his ambassadors to woo the great Borders wizard, Sir Michael Scott of Aikwood, into a foretelling of the future. This group consists not of smooth-talking flatterers but of men chosen for their unusual talents and wiles, such as Gibby Jordan, the silliest laird in the Borders; the "Deil’s Tam," the crabbiest man in the Borders; and a monk who turns out, fortuitously, to be man-of-science Roger Bacon, the inventor of gunpowder.
