James Hogg -whose surname meant 'a sheep older than a lamb but before its first shearing' in the Scottish dialect of his time- started to write after being exposed to his employer's collection of books as a young shepherd in Blackhouse farm, Yarrow. Following the change, he began to make his living partly through various farming projects, and partly as a writer.
Poetry dominated Hogg's writing attentions until his late fourties (when he began to write novels;). A growing enthusiasm for Scottish poetry led to the publication of a collection of dialect pastorals in 1801, and to a friendship with Sir Walter Scott, the famous novelist. Scott encouraged him to write, and he published a number of poetry volumes. Perhaps his most well-known work is the novel

SCOTTISH E-BOOKS - QUEEN HYNDE
QUEEN HYNDE by James Hogg (Abridged) A stirring account of adventure and romance set in the early Scotland of saints and swordsmen. A young Scottish queen must rule, and seek a husband, whilst in imminent peril from a sea-borne Viking attack.
The author claimed the tale to be true, handed down in story and song, and without doubt many characters are historically authentic. The remnants of Beregonium, first palace of the Scots and original home of the Stone of Destiny, still exist on a vitrified, rocky hill in Benderloch Argyll.
Whatever the truth, standing on the mighty cliff of the 'Fort of the King' and gazing westwards over the magnificent bay it is easy to imagine that great deeds once chose this land as their stage. And that some beautiful, royal lady gave birth to a legend whose shadows cling here for ever. Illustrated, color photographs and line drawings. Sample contents To order:

Lay Sermons
James Hogg. Edited by Douglas Mack and Gillian Hughes James Hogg (1770-1835) ranks alongside Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson as one of Scotland's leading writers. Yet only a few of his works have been released in modern editions. Lay Sermons, which was first published in 1834, a year before Hogg's death, is the first reprinting of the original classic. In his last work, Hogg playfully adopts the role of preacher, casting meditations on life, religion and literature in the form of sermons on such subjects as "Young Women," "Soldiers," "Reason and Intellect," "Marriage," and "Reviewers." Witty and revealing, Lay Sermons gives insight into the mind of a 'justified sinner.' With a complete introduction, explanatory notes and editorial comments accmmpanying each text, Lay Sermons is a definitive work for one of Scotland's greatest writers. About the Authors
Douglas Mack is reader in English at the University of Stirling. Gillian Hughes is editor of the journal Studies in Hogg and his World.

The Three Perils of Woman
James Hogg. Edited by David Groves and Douglas S. Mack, and Antony J. Hasler "Both stories [of The Three Perils of Woman ] are generically diverse, self-consciously impure. Hogg described them as 'domestic tales', apparently soliciting a female readership whose delicacy he then assaults with speculations about promiscuity and prostitution, and with prayers so chattily informal that reviewers found them blasphemous. Both stories modulate suddenly from comedy to tragedy, though one - but which?- struggles through to what may be a happy ending. [...] What matters about The Three Perils of Woman is not the conclusions it has to offer about the issues it raises, but the fact that these are addressed with such painful urgency. They have become urgent once again, and will continue to be so; and if the book provides an especially useful way of thinking about them, it's because it offers an 'unflinching' account of a violent national past while acknowledging the temptation, the impulse, even the need, to flinch."
London Review of Books "Commentators once dismissed Perils of Woman as a bad book because it trampled on the flowerbeds of early-nineteenth-century decorum; they now acclaim it a masterpiece for the very same reason, reading subversive craft in the place of oafishness."

James Hogg (1770-1835) was born in the Ettrick Valley in the Scottish Borders. When he was seven, his father, a sheep farmer, went bankrupt and Hogg left school hardly able to read; he could only shape letters "nearly an inch in length," he wrote later in his autobiography. For many years, he worked as a cowherd and later as a shepherd. His mother, however, steeped him in ballads and folklore, and his grandfather was apparently the last man to talk with the fairies. Only in his twenties, when Hogg was exposed to books once more, did he begin to write, his first creations being "songs and ballads made up for the lassies to sing in chorus." At forty, he set out for Edinburgh and, after starting the short-lived satirical magazine The Spy , he wrote poems and stories for Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner , first published in 1824, has long been considered his masterpiece. The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner
This work of black humor, acute psychological insight, and, in the end, deeply compassionate humanity is one of the masterpieces of literature in English.

James Hogg in 2000 and Beyond
Douglas S. Mack
The call for submissions for the present special number of Romanticism on the Net posed a question: What new texts (texts newly edited from manuscript, those recovered from the less-read literature of the period, or texts that have been substantially re-edited) will shape discussion of British literature 1780-1830 in the first decade of the next century? This question brings to mind various texts by James Hogg, whose Collected Works are currently being published by the Edinburgh University Press. Hogg was for long regarded as a minor writer, and this view of him can still be encountered. Margaret Russett, however, has argued: The minor is to be distinguished [...] not only from the major but also from the disenfranchised marginal writer, of whom, again, Romanticism presents many examples, ranging from peasant poets like John Clare and James Hogg to then-famous women writers like Felicia Hemans, Mary Robinson, and Ann Radcliff. Hogg can indeed be seen as a 'disenfranchised marginal writer', but the present essay will suggest that his extraordinarily powerful and interesting texts nevertheless have a part to play at the heart of current discussion of British literature of the Romantic era.
