"Mr. Higginson is a voluminous writer both in prose and verse, and has published several volumes. The sonnets I have selected are from The Afternoon Landscape , just published by Messrs. Longmans." ( Sharp Read a sonnet addressed to him by William Braithwaite.
The Snowing of the Pines
Softer than silence, stiller than still air,
Float down from high pine boughs the slender leaves.
The forest floor its annual boon receives
That comes like snowfall, tireless, tranquil, fair.
Gently they glide, gently they clothe the bare
Old rocks with grace. Their fall a mantle weaves
Of paler yellow than autumnal sheaves
Or those strange blossoms the witch-hazels wear.
Athwart long aisles the sunbeams pierce their way;
High up, the crows are gathering for the night;
The delicate needles fill the air; the jay
Takes through their golden mist his radiant flight;
They fall and fall, till at November's close
The snow-flakes drop as lightlysnows on snows.
The Baby Sorceress
My baby sits beneath the tall elm-trees

He also supported women's suffrage and encouraged many female writers. Thomas W. Higginson was born on Dec. 23, 1823, in Cambridge, Mass. He graduated from Harvard in 1841. In 1847 he graduated from the Harvard Divinity School and married a distant cousin, Mary Channing. The couple moved to Newburyport, M.A., where Higginson served the Unitarian congregation, preaching social reform in general and abolition in particular. He was asked to resign after 2 years. Free of the pulpit, Higginson worked for women's rights, the Free Soil party, and abolitionist causes, which brought him into contact with such men as Henry David Thoreau and Orestes Brownson. In the 1850s, while pastor of the Free Church of Worcester, Mass., Higginson lectured and wrote poetry and essays for the

    Biography Thomas Wentworth Higginson was born in Cambridge on Dec. 22, 1823. He was educated at Harvard, receiving his A.B. in 1841 and graduating from the Divinity School in 1847. While an undergraduate at Harvard, Higginson took the optional coursed in natural history offered by Thaddeus William Harris and developed interests in botany and entomology under Harris' influence. From 1840-1841, Higginson was corresponding secretary and entomological curator of the Harvard Natural History Society, and in the years after his A.B. continued to do some general botanizing. After Harvard, Higginson was involved in the Civil War, in religious activities, in Massachusetts politics, and in the writing of a number of general historical and literary works. During the course of his many other occupations, he maintained an amateur interest in natural history and botany: he was a member of the Boston Society of Natural History and of the Cambridge Entomological Club; he published a memoir of Thaddeus William Harris in 1869 and a book of general essays on plant lore ( The Procession of the Flowers and kindred papers ...) in 1897; and in his biographical blurbs in American Men of Science (1906 and 1910 eds.), he listed the flora of Boston and vicinity as one of his scientific interests.

As I thought, a few of you were able to identify Higginson as the somewhat uncomprehending mentor of Emily Dickinson: One of the few admitted into her presence during her long seclusion. He was invited twice, roughly equivalent to being invited twice for an audience with the Pope. He also was one of the few outsiders invited by her family to participate in her funeral. Actually, I knew some other things about Higginson besides this, because of my specializing in that area of American culture and history, but even I did not know the full range of his achievement until I picked up this book, The Magnificent Activist, a collection of his essays edited by Howard N. Meyer with an extremely informative introduction to Higginson. In the time allotted me, it would be impossible to give a full account of his contributions but I will touch some highlights. 1: The love of personal liberty.

    • My name is Mary and I'm an alcoholic. What is an alcoholic? That's a question many people have asked for hundreds of years. The only person who can decide whether or not a person is an alcoholic is the person themselves. Some say it's genetic, some say it's learned, some say it's a psychiatric ailment and some say it just is. The American medical association recognizes it as a disease. I know the results are all the same, death, prison, or recovery.
