Paul Johann Ludwig von Heyse was born in Berlin, Germany on March 15, 1830. Before receiving his doctorate at Bonn University in 1852, Heyse studied Romance and classical philology and literature at Berlin University. After college, Heyse traveled throughout Italy , continuing and deepening his knowledge of Romance studies and creative writing. In 1854, King Maximilian II of Bavaria presented Heyse with the opportunity to be a part of the royal order of poets, writers, and scholars in Munich. This group of intellectuals had an increasing sensation for writing in idealism and classical conventions of romance, folktales, and myths. Unfortunately, within a few short years Heyse was surpassed by new writers of impressionism and realism. Der Jungbrunnen . His first published tragedy was Francesca Da Rimini , completed in 1857, and Kinder der Welt (Children of the World) , published in 1873. During his lifetime, Heyse wrote more than 100 novels. He became considered an honored and prominent writer of short stories.

Paul Johann Ludwig Heyse Main Biography The German author Paul Johann Ludwig Heyse (1830-1914) is best known for his novellas. Marked by careful construction, nobility and dignity of content, and economy of form, these works reveal his relation to the classical tradition. Paul Heyse was born in Berlin on March 15, 1830. The son of a professor, he pursued studies leading to a doctorate in philology. During an extended visit to Italy in 1852, he determined to abandon formal scholarship for a career in literature. In 1854 he was summoned to Munich by Maximilian II, king of Bavaria, who granted him a lifetime stipend. His subsequent career as a leader of the Munich Poets' Circle was marked by professional and popular success. Heyse's half dozen novels avoid the political and sociological and tend to emphasize ethical views and goals.

Heyse, Paul Johann Ludwig
The year 1853 yielded even greater results in creative writing. In the spring of 1854 some of my publications persuaded King Maximilian II of Bavaria to offer me, at the suggestion of Emanuel Geibel, a position in Munich with an annual salary of 1000 guilders, to take part in his so-called symposia, weekly soirées at which scholars and poets were gathered. Before I moved I was married to Kugler's daughter Margarete, whom death took away from me in the autumn of 1862 after she had borne me four children. Five years later I married a young woman from Munich, Anna Schubart, with whom for forty-four years I have lived happily, except for the premature deaths of two children and a son from my first marriage. I have given a detailed account of the first four decades of my life until the death of my dear royal patron in my Jugenderinnerungen und Bekenntnisse (Berlin, 1900) [Memories of my Youth and Confessions]. From that time on outward events receded; my life has passed without particular events or adventures and has been devoted entirely to writing. Here is a list of books published by the Cotta Publishing House: Gesammelte Werke (1871-1910) [Collected Works], 36 vols.; Dramatische Dichtungen (1864-1905) [Dramatic Works], 36 vols.; Romane, Novellen, lyrische und epische Gedichte (1902-1912) [Novels, Novellas, Lyrical and Epic Poems], series I, 12 vols.; series II, 40 vols.; Italienische Dichter seit der Mitte des 18ten Jahrhunderts: übersetzungen und Studien (1889-1905) [Italian Poets since the Middle of the I8th Century: Translations and Studies], 5 vols.
