The dating of the poetic work of Hesiod is not clear, but is always related to a historical event. We know that the poet won the song contest at the funeral games of the hero Amphidamas, who was killed at a naval battle during the Lelantine war . The war between Chalkis and Eretria must have taken place at the end of the 8th century or at the beginning of the 7th century B.C. We also know that Hesiod's father left Cyme in Aeolis and settled in Ascra in Boeotia, at the foot of Mount Helicon. This happen circa the middle of the 8th century B.C . and from the writings of Hesiod we conclude that his family was not very prosperous. We do not know important details about him with certainty , whether he was literate or not, for example. However, it is a fact that his works were influenced by the oral Ionic tradition of hexameters, according to which the Homeric epics were created. Moreover, it is certain that the use of writing played a more important role at the survival of his work than in the case of the Iliad and the Odyssey.
