Hesiod
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Hesiod Hesiodos ) was an early Greek poet and rhapsode , believed to have lived around the year 700 BC . From the 5th century BC , literary historians have debated the priority of Hesiod or of Homer . Most modern scholars now agree that Homer lived before Hesiod. Hesiod serves as a major source for knowledge of Greek mythology , of farming techniques, of archaic Greek astronomy and of ancient time-keeping.

    Life
Hesiod lived in Boeotia and regularly visited Mt Helicon , the mythological home of the Muses , who, he says, gave him the gift of poetic creation one day while he tended sheep. The few details of Hesiod's life come from his own works. His poem Works and Days mentions that he lost a lawsuit with his brother Perses over their inheritance . However, some scholars have seen Perses as a literary creation, a foil for the moralizing of the Works and Days . In another biographical detail, Hesiod mentions a poetry contest at Chalcis where the sons of one Amiphidamas awarded him a tripod (ll.654-662).

(ll. 453-491) But Rhea was subject in love to Cronos and bare
splendid children, Hestia (18), Demeter, and gold-shod Hera and
strong Hades, pitiless in heart, who dwells under the earth, and
the loud-crashing Earth-Shaker, and wise Zeus, father of gods and

Cronos swallowed as each came forth from the womb to his mother's
knees with this intent, that no other of the proud sons of Heaven
should hold the kingly office amongst the deathless gods. For he
learned from Earth and starry Heaven that he was destined to be
overcome by his own son, strong though he was, through the contriving of great Zeus (19). Therefore he kept no blind outlook, but watched and swallowed down his children: and unceasing grief seized Rhea. But when she was about to bear Zeus, the father of gods and men, then she besought her own dear parents, Earth and starry Heaven, to devise some plan with her

Package: hesiod (3.0.2-15.1)
Utilities for Project Athena's service name resolution protocol
Hesiod is a name service library that can provide general name service for a variety of applications. It is derived from BIND, the Berkeley Internet Name Daemon, and leverages the existing DNS infrastructure of a network. It is used on a number of university networks, including MIT and Iowa State University. If you will not be using this system on a network that already uses Hesiod, you probably do not need this package.

Hesiod map support for autofs
Autofs controls the operation of the automount daemons. The automount daemons automatically mount filesystems when they are used and unmount them after a period of inactivity. This is done based on a set of pre-configured maps. The kernel automounter implements an almost complete SunOS style automounter under Linux. Automounter version 4 (autofs4) has to be enabled when compiling the kernel. Debian packaged kernels have it enabled. This package provides support for Hesiod filsys entries within autofs. These entries are used extensively at MIT, and may also be used at other sites.

NAME
hesiod.conf - Configuration file for the Hesiod library
DESCRIPTION
The file hesiod.conf determines the behavior of the Hesiod library. Blank lines and lines beginning with a `#' character are ignored. All other lines should be of the form variable value , where the value should be a single word. Possible variables and values are:
lhs
Specifies the domain prefix used for Hesiod queries. In almost all cases, you should specify ``lhs=.ns''. The default value if you do not specify an lhs value is no domain prefix, which is not compatible with most Hesiod domains.
rhs
Specifies the default Hesiod domain; this value may be overridden by the environment variable. You must specify an rhs line for the Hesiod library to work properly.
classes
Specifies which DNS classes Hesiod should do lookups in. Possible values are IN (the preferred class) and HS (the deprecated class, still used by some sites). You may specify both classes separated by a comma to try one class first and then the other if no entry is available in the first class. The default value of the classes variable is ``IN,HS''.

BUGS
There default value for ``lhs'' should probably be more reasonable.

November 19, 2003 Advice For Opera-Goers Actually, this is good advice for just about any man at any public event: Taking your drink with you into the men's room and holding it in one hand while you use the urinal is rather tasteless. It is all the more tasteless if your drink is precisely the same color as a urine sample, and in exactly the same kind of cheap plastic cup that a doctor would provide. I don't know whether this particular sample was beer that had gone flat, an unusually yellow shade of 'white' wine, or some kind of mixed drink most likely the first, since there weren't any ice cubes , but thanks a lot for the involuntary mental image, stranger. Otherwise, the Baltimore Lyric Opera's production of Don Pasquale was quite good. It was not until well into the third act that I realized one of the best things about it: a total absence of Eurotrashiness in the production.
