Hesiod (ca. 700 BC)

Greek philosopher who described his cosmology and cosmogony in the Theogeny . Hesiod's explanations of how the gods came about was probably derived from Near Eastern (Babylonian) lore. He created a family tree of gods in which Chaos (the yawning gap) produced Erebus (the Abyss) and Night, who produced Aether and Day. At the same time, Earth produced the Heavens, Mountains, and Sea. The Heavens and Earth then produced Cronos. He also divided the universe into Heaven, Aether, Earth, Erebus, Tartarus, and surrounded it by the Ocean. The difference in levels between Earth and Heaven was called Chaos.

Hesiod
He is one of the oldest Greek poets born in Askra of Boeotia in the 8th century. He wrote two great poems: "Works and Days" and "Theogony". In "Works and Days" he speaks about justice and hard work, which is the only way to success, and he gives advice about agriculture, commerce, navigation as well as about marriage, bringing-up children and other moral and useful precepts. "Theogony" is an Epic which consists of 1022 lines and his author treats the birth and the history of the Greek gods as well as the creation of the Universe. According to him Chaos was out there first, then Earth, Tartarus - in the depth of Earth -, and last of all Eros (Love). Eros is the natural power which caused the union of the identical parts of matter resulting in the formation of several bodies, and by keeping them united it kept the whole Universe in order. These four elements are mentioned as self made elements and not as coming from each other. By "chaos" Hesiod means the dark which dominated everywhere (or water). From Chaos came forth Erebus and Night and then night bare Aether and Day. And Earth first gave birth to Uranos (Heaven), then Mountains and Pontus.

Hesiod
Hesiod, a poor farmer, was believed to have written in the ninth, sometimes eighth century. Hesiod was the author of several significant poems, the most meaningful being the Iliad Odyssey , and Theogony . Hesiod was believed to have been the first man in Greece to wonder how everything had happened, the world, the sky, the gods, mankind, and to think out an explanation. The Theogony is an account of the creation of the universe and the generations of gods, and this has been proven to be very useful in increasing our knowledge about Greek mythology.
Aeschylus
Aeschylus was the oldest of the three tragic poets, the other two being Sophocles and Euripides. Except for Aeschylus' Persians , written to celebrate the Greeks victory over the Persians, all of his plays contain mythological subjects. Along with Homer , these works provide the main foundation of our knowledge of Greek mythology.
Apuleius
Apuleius, a Latin writer, was believed to have written in the second century AD. The famous love story of Cupid and Psyche is told only by Apuleius, who writing style and patterns have often said to have mimicked

Hesiod (c. 740-670 B.C.)
Hesiod from Ascra was a famous poet in ancient Greece, living about 740-670 B.C. His mentioning of the Pleiades and the Hyades in his work, "Works and Days," of about 720 to 700 B.C., is one of the first known documents related to these two open star clusters in Taurus; only Homer 's mentioning in his Ilias is probably a couple of decades older. Hesiod is commemorated by the naming of Moon Crater Hesiodus (29.4S, 16.3W, 42.0, named 1935), Mercury crater Hesiod (58.5S, 35.0W, 107.0 km, in 1976) as well as asteroid (8550) Hesiodos (discovered August 12, 1994 on La Silla by E.W. Elst, provisionally designated 1994 PV24, as well as 1979 WB6 and 1987 YB4 from pre-discovery sightings). Links

http://www.in2greece.com/english/historymyth/history/ancient/hesiod.htm
Hesiod
(8th century BC) Together with Homer, this poet is considered the earliest known writer in the Western world. He was born in Boeotia, but after his father died he settled in Naupaktos. According to a legend, Hesiod met the Muses while herding his animals on M. Helicon. They told him to narrate "the present, the past and what is to come".
Hesiod lived as a farmer for most of his life, and his work Works and Days, is a poetic manual to correct life: one should be hard working, there the world is in moral decay which days one should do certain things on ones farm according to religious calendar. He described the history of the world in five phases or periods, starting with the Golden age until the evil Iron age.
In his Theogony, Genealogy of the gods, he aspired to structure the Greek myths and described the creation of the world from chaos
and the births and adventures of the gods. He counted to 30000 divine beings.
In the lost work Catalogue of Women, he wrote about the exploits of the heroes whose mothers were mortal women.

from Hesiod's Theogony
Zeus Outwits Prometheus
The Creation of Women
For when the gods and mortal men fell to disputing
at Mekone, Prometheus, acting in a spirit of kindness,
divided and dished up a great ox, deceiving the mind of Zeus.
On the one side he put the flesh and the rich and fat inner parts
hidden under the skin, concealed in the paunch of the ox;
on the other side he put the ox's white bones, arranging them
well with skillful deception, concealed in silvery fat.
Then the Father of Gods and of Men addressed him as follows:
"Son of Iapetos, lord surpassing all others in glory,
ah my good fellow, how very unfairly you make this division!"
Thus did Zeus, whose plans are unfailing, chidingly speak. And Prometheus, the clever deviser, made him this answer, gently smiling the while and mindful of skillful deception: "Zeus, most glorious and greatest of gods eternally living, choose for yourself of these helpings the one that your heart desires." Thus he spoke with deceit, but Zeus, whose plans are unfailing, saw through the trick and wasn't deceived, but planned in his heart
