Robert Herrick
Robert Herrick is buried in Dean Prior Church, Devon. (See map...ref no. 4) He is buried in an unmarked grave but is commemorated by a tablet and a stained glass window in the church. Near the door, a showcase contains his poetical works. Herrick was vicar at Dean Prior from 1629-1647 and again from 1662 to the end of his life. At first he was repelled by rural life but over time became accustomed to it. He was said to be a dynamic preacher who once threw his sermon at an inattentive congregation. Herrick is renowned for his highly crafted lyrics on the subject on human mortality. A.C. Swinburne called him "The greatest song-writer ever born to the English race." Herrick (along with Carew, Suckling and Lovelace) was one of the cavalier poets. Although not a formal group, they were all supporters of Charles I and were heavily influenced by Ben Jonson

Herrick, Robert
English Cavalier poet, whose work is noted for its diversity of form and for its style, melody, and feeling. He was born in London and educated at the University of Cambridge. In 1629 he became vicar of Dean Prior in Devonshire, but in 1647, during the Great Rebellion, he was deprived of his position because of his Royalist sympathies.
Following the restoration of Charles II, Herrick was reinstated at Dean Prior, where he resided from 1662 until his death. His chief work is Hes perides; or, the Works Both Human and Divine of Robert Herrick, Esq. (1648). Within the same book, but under a separate title page bearing the date 1647, was printed a group of religious poems, His Noble Numbers. The entire collection contains more than 1200 short poems, ranging in form from epistles, eclogues, and epigrams to love poems. The themes are pastoral, dealing mostly with English country life and village customs. Herrick was influenced by classical Roman poetry. Many of his poems, such as "To the Virgins to Make Much of Time," "Corinna's Going a-Maying," and "Delight in Disorder," have been anthologized, and several were set to music.

Rubens and his young wife, Helene, the couple at the far left, are shown in a garden, about to join a group of obviously loving couples. [Rubens' own house in the background, and Venus and cupids on the left] ... The colors are soft and warm, light, gay, ripe, and sensous. The figures melt into each other in a soft, flowing rhythm. ...The courtly man in the broad-brimmed hat introduces us to a world that will be, more and more, the subject of arta golden time without pian or anxiety. Upon Julia's Clothes
Whenas in silks my Julia goes,
Then, then, methinks, how sweetly flows
That liquefaction of her clothes! Next, when I cast mine eyes and see
That brave vibration each way free,
Oh how that glittering taketh me!
    Upon a Child
    Here a pretty baby lies
    Sung asleep with lullabies:
Pray be silent, and not stir
    Th'easy earth that covers her.
    Upon a Child That Died
Here she lies, a pretty bud,
Lately made of flesh and blood,
Who as soon fell fast asleep
As her little eyes did peep. Give her strewings, but not stir The earth that lightly covers her. The first one is very sensual, no? I'd like to hear some comment on the specific words and images. The image (i.e., the metaphor) in the last three lines especially is an interestingly elusive one. Can you make it out? (I remember as a graduate student being in a class that was posed that question and I remember failing to see what the instructor was getting at!) Which of the two latter poems do you think is stronger?

Clergyman and poet, Robert Herrick was born in 1591 in London, the seventh child of Nicholas Herrick, a wealthy goldsmith. In November 1592, two days after making a will, his father killed himself by jumping from the fourth-floor window of his house. However, the Queen's Almoner did not confiscate the Herrick estate for the crown as was usually the case with suicides. There is no record of Herrick attending school. In 1607 he was apprenticed to his uncle Sir William Herrick as a goldsmith.
