HAGGARD, HENRY RIDER, 1856- This English novelist was born at Norfolk and received his education in the Grammar School of Ipswich. He was admitted to the bar, but gave up his profession for literary pursuits. He traveled widely. His works are not distinguished for artistic excellence and value, but the manner in which the stories are constructed and incidents are set forth get a grip on the attention of the reader. HAGGARD, H. RIDER Deals with antiquity. HARDWICK, MOLLIE Harry Harrison (A reader recommends:) I would like to recommend a trilogy that is probably best categorized as alternative history, but I think any fan of HF would enjoy these books. The trilogy (in order) is "The Hammer and the Cross", "One King's Way", and "The King and the Emperor." The author is the Harry Harrison. The trilogy chronicles the rise of a Saxon-Norse cast-off named Shef, who is part of a Norse civilization and religion that rivals Christianity. The trilogy starts in 9th century AD England but expands to cover Scandanavia, the Holy Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire and Islamic North Africa during the same time period. Cynthia Harrod-Eagles [Cressage comments:] slightly surprised to see that this author isn't on your or Besaw's list. She has written (so far) 21 books (dynasty series) which concentrate on the fictional Morland family based in Yorkshire, UK. First title is 'The Founding' starting in 15th century. Book 21 which was published in May (1998) is set around the American Wars of Independance.

By: Roger Childs
Henty was a writer best known for adventure stories that taught history to generations of impressionable British and American youngsters, along with all the benefits of manliness, honesty and self-reliance. Many biographies from readers of the time tell the same story of schoolroom classes, after the boys being told that they may read, echoing to the sound of desks being opened, noisily closed and every boy banging down a Henty volume onto his desk ! Henty wrote 122 books, contributed to 72 books and annuals, and 34 periodicals and newspapers. More contributions and stories continue to be discovered as researchers for The Henty Society continue investigations. This 'essay' was prompted by the errors of judgment that well-meaning sellers of Henty books make with their internet listings. My main complaint being that these errors are always seen as fact by the reader, thereby compounding the problem. Held Fast for England was published on 1 st August 1891 with the title page showing 1892. The American first edition of

CHAPTER XIX.
THE GARRISONS IN THE TRANSVAAL.
T HE On the 12th of February an ineffective attempt was made to take the Red Horse Kraal, seven miles from Pretoria, on the road towards Rustenberg. The force consisted of twenty-two officers and 533 men. The carabineers under Captain Sanctuary advanced and attacked a large stone building, 1000 yards from the kraal. They were received by a very heavy fire from the Boers, who advanced in such strength that Colonel Gildea thought it prudent to fall back. This movement, covered by the horse, was effected, the infantry taking no part in the fight. Captain Sanctuary and eight men were killed; Colonel Gildea and eight others severely wounded. No further sortie was made during the continuance of the war, but the Boers did not venture to attack the British position. The town of Potchefstroom stood in the district most thickly inhabited by the Boers. On the 14th of December, when it was reported that a large number of Boers were approaching, Colonel Winsloe, who commanded, sent Captain Falls with twenty men of the 21st Fusiliers, twenty-six men of a corps commanded by Commandant Raaff, and sixteen civilian volunteers to hold the court-house. The jail was garrisoned by twenty fusiliers, and the fort and earthwork, of some thirty yards square, situated about 1000 yards from the court-house, was held by 140 men of the fusiliers and a detachment of artillerymen, with two 9-pounders, under Major Thornhill. The three posts were provisioned as well as circumstances permitted.

A short biography of George Alfred Henty A GREAT Briton!! G. A. Henty (1832 - 1902). A contemporary of George Alfred Henty once described him as a man of strong will, reasonable ambitions and a hard, steady worker. He also said that Henty was a burly man with a good humored English sort of face, who always smoked a short, well-colored clay pipe. Henty was born on December 8, 1832 at Trumpington, near Cambridge, England. He was the eldest son of a stockbroker. He was educated at Westminster School and at Cambridge, where he enrolled in 1852, but he left without obtaining a degree. With the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854, Henty and his brother joined the British Army. They were put on the commissariat staff of a hospital, where they were concerned with supplying food for the staff and patients. In 1855, they were sent to the Crimea. The following year, Henty's brother died of cholera. Henty wrote about some of his war adventures in a series of letters which described the siege of the Russian fortress of Sevastopol. The letters were accepted for publication by a newspaper, but Henty did not show any interest then in writing as a career.

George Alfred Henty was born December 8, 1832, near Cambridge, England. George and his brother served in the British Army where they fought in the Crimean War. After serving in the military he helped his father manage a coal mine before discovering his true gift writing. He began working for a local newspaper and was soon reporting on battles around the world. In between news assignments he was working on these books. Henty wrote over 100 adventure books for boys. We are currently offering 39 on this CD. Great reading for the young men in your home! As a rule much of what boys learn at school is left behind them when classes are given up for the sterner work of the world. Unless there is a special demand for a certain subject, that subject is apt to become a thing of the past, both in theory and practice. This, however, is not likely to be the case with history, so long as G.A. Henty writes books for boys, and boys read them. History is his especial forte, and that he is able to invest the dry facts of history with life, and make them attractive to the modern schoolboy, says not a little for his power as a story-teller for boys. It is questionable if history has any better means of fixing itself in the minds of youthful readers than as it is read in the pages of G.A. Henty's works. This CD-ROM contains the unabridged text of 39 books by G. A. Henty in plain text format - you can read these on your computer or print out all or part of them. You can copy and paste into any word processing document or email and adjust the font and size to whatever is easiest for you to read. (I prefer a larger print myself!) Also, if you download the free program from www.readplease.com your computer can even read them TO YOU!
