G. A. Henty was a 19th Century (1832-1902) storyteller who wrote many books and stories. He was so popular that he was dubbed "The Prince of Storytellers" in his lifetime. Fortunately, Henty’s books have been reprinted so they are not lost! His imaginative tales bring you learning in an enchanting manner, teaching English vocabulary, culture, geography, and history all woven together in a well-written story like a fine Persian rug. Since Henty wrote in a time when our language was different, being more refined and broader, and much more complicated than our speech of today. Therefore, if you would like to have your child learn a very extensive use of words, many of which are still perfectly usable and wonderful, as opposed to being archaic and/or "corny," Henty’s books afford your family an excellent opportunity. Among Henty’s titles are: "The Cat of Bubastes" set in Pharonic Egypt; "The Young Carthaginian" a story of Hannibal’s life; "For the Temple: A Tale of the Fall of Jerusalem;" "Beric the Briton: A Story of the Roman Invasion;" "St. Bartholomew’s Eve: A Tale of the Huguenot Wars (in France);" "By Pike and Dyke: A Tale of the Rise of the Dutch Republic;" "Under Drake’s Flag: A Tale of the Spanish Main;" "With Lee in Virginia: A Story of the American Civil War;" and "By Right of Conquest or With Cortez in Mexico."

"The Forgotten Monarchy of Scotland" by Prince Michael Stewart of Albany. Passionately written and researched by the the author, who`s passion is fueled by the fact that it is his own family and personal identity he is establishing in the face of a two century old conspiracy who`s source is one of the most powerful governments on earth. You can also read an interview given by him in 1999. Comments from Mark
I read the last couple of sections under Charles Edward Stuart, and confess to being slightly disappointed. It's still the best site on the Net. I was hoping, though, that you knew something about Charlotte's children as you seem to about everything else. According to The Last Stuarts , by James Lees-Milne, "...his daughter was the mistress of no less an exalted individual than the Prince Ferdinand de Rohan-Guemenee, Archbishop of Bordeaux...she was recovering from the birth of a son. The child, baptised Charles Edward was in fact the third of Charlotte's illegitimate children by the Prince Archbishop, and the only one whose history has been traced." Very few people know about that, and considering that Michael Alexander Stewart has not convinced me, I would like to know if there is a living descendant of the bonny prince. Oh, and there was something else in the book I thought might interest you. "His [Charles's] ghost is said to haunt a bedroom in Westbrook Place, Godalming."

The Canadian publishers of the three historical adventure novels under review aim to revive general interest in books that were once phenomenally popular and which remain noteworthy today for their innovative treatment of North American history, as well as for the celebrity status their authors once achieved. Both Formac and Inheritance Publishers emphasize the lasting educational and entertainment value of historical fiction by Evelyn Eaton (1902-1983), Alice Jones (1853-1933), and G.A. Henty (1832-1902), respectively. In reissuing the complete original texts, the publishers also share the goal of fostering a taste for historical adventure as well as a desire for unabridged historiography.

    "Zebros and elsophants":
Images of blacks in natural history adventure-empire tales read by young people in Wellington County, Ontario, 1880-1890 by lian goodall The four books under study were all written in the second half of the nineteenth century. They represent a volume of literature written on one of the most popular subjects for children in the late Victorian age: natural history. Such books taught children about the flora, fauna, and the British subjects in far-away colonies, serving to transmit altitudes toward other races and countries. The expansion of the British Empire, the increasing interest in natural history which was fueled by writings of Darwin and other scientists, and the development of middle class literacy all converged to make natural history the subject of a vast number of factual and fictional works. Children were especially enthralled by the stories of explorer-heroes. The tales of explorers provided the kind of detail that fed the natural scientific curiosity of children, while at the same time giving them more general information about the far reaches of the expanding British empire. Thus, these books satiated the youngster's curiosity about the "geography, resources and people"(3) in the empire, and, as well, they held romantic attraction for young readers. The names of Livingstone and Stanley, famous at the time, are still well-known today (4).
