G.A. Henty Introduction Henty, George Alfred (1832-1902) English war correspondent and author, helped set the standard for 19th Century boys’ literature, primarily through his prodigious output of 77 historical novels for boys plus 11 intended for a more adult audience.Henty also produced numerous short stories and edited two short-lived boys’ magazines,
“The Union Jack” and “Beeton’s Boy’s Own Magazine.” Henty’s stories were influential on the generation that fought World War I—F. Scott Fitzgerald describes his protagonist in “This Side of Paradise” as having “all the Henty biases in history”—and continued to reach and inspire later readers, including historians A.J.P. Taylor and Barbara Tuchman and novelist Mordecai Richler.
G. A. Henty pioneered at the same time, adventure and historical fiction. He combined the two into a remarkable series of action novels and short stories that accurately portrayed the background of the British Empire in its glory years while weaving in a young hero whose interaction with large world events entertained the reader while educating. He followed on the heels ofWalter Scott, and developed his special genre to a point where scores of others looked to him for a blueprint.
Henty did even more than developing a great literary contribution. He brought the Empire to its citizens all over the globe. Through reading his novels, friends of England learned of the breath of the Empire and the moral values of loyalty, courage, dedication, and honesty. Later critics complain of denigration towards the real and imagined enemies of British power, and certainly various books reflect the lack of tolerance for cultural diversity endemic in the course of world domination by victorious armies carrying the Union Jack.

His heroes are diligent, courageous, intelligent and dedicated to their country and cause in the face, at times, of great peril. His histories, particularly battle accounts, have been recognized by historian scholars for their accuracy. In fact, the only criticism Henty faced by the liberals of his day was that his heroes were "too Christian." There is nothing dry in Mr. Henty's stories and thus he removes the drudgery and laborious task often associated with the study of history. H P reston/Speed Publications is delighted to offer again the works of G. A. Henty. Action-packed exciting adventure awaits adults and a whole new generation.

Rachel Johnson is Subject Collections Librarian in the Education and Sport team, and her contribution to the recent UCW Student Research Conference was within the subject area of Children's Literature with a research focus on 2 nineteenth century authors, George MacDonald (1824-1905) and GA Henty (1832-1902), both of whom wrote their main body of work during the second half of the nineteenth century against a background of social and political change and religious doubt and questioning. Though all except three of George MacDonald's works for children were written as fairy tales, the stories of G. A. Henty were written as boys adventure stories. Within this context her particular interest is in the contrasting value structures within their work and how they are communicated to the reader.
The aspect presented at the UCW Student Research Conference was the fairy tale motifs and narrative patterns found in the work of both authors indicating how these aspects fit into the main focus of the study, that is, the value structures within their work.

Along with a rigorous course of study, Henty participated in boxing, wrestling, and rowing. The strenuous study and healthy, competitive participation in sports prepared Henty to be with the British army in Crimea, as a war correspondent witnessing Garbaldi fight in Italy, being present in Paris during the Franco-Prussian war, in Spain with the Carlists, at the opening of the Suez Canal, touring India with the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and a trip to the California gold fields. These are only a few of his exciting adventures. G.A. Henty lived during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) and began his story telling career with his own children. After dinner, he would spend an hour or two in telling them a story that would continue the next day. Some stories took weeks! A friend was present one day and watched the spell-bound reaction of his children suggesting that he write down his stories so others could enjoy them. He did. Henty wrote approx. 144 books plus stories for magazines and was dubbed as "The Prince of Story-Tellers" and "The Boy's Own Historian." "MY DEAR LADS, In the following pages I have endeavored to give you a vivid picture of the wonderful events of...." This address marks the beginning of many of the almost 80 historical adventures G.A. Henty wrote for boys in the last three decades of the 19th century. Born into a comfortable family, Henty boxed, wrestled, and rowed his way through Westminster and Cambridge (where he did not complete his degree) before serving as a war correspondent in the Crimea, Italy, and Ethiopia. Enjoying the type of adventure that he wrote about so prolifically, he witnessed the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, journeyed through India with the Prince of Wales, and traveled to California. Henty's books touched on dozens of episodes in British history, including the Norman Conquest ( Wulf the Saxon), the establishment of British rule in India ( With Clive in India), and the Boer War ( With Buller in Natal). All followed the same basic formula: A boy-hero, generally age 15, finds himself on his own as a result of family circumstances; he meets up with a great man in whose company he has an adventure; in the course of the historical crisis he meets and rescues a girl destined to be his wife; the crisis is resolved, the British triumph, and the boy-hero returns as a man to settle down in England, modest but strengthened by the memory of his adventure. To the modern reader, Henty's books are notable for their hearty imperialism, undisguised racism, and jingoistic patriotism. To Henty's readers, though, devoted to his books in large numbers until World War II, British history was turned into adventure, and many boys learned that Great Britain became great and boys became men to borrow from another of Henty's titles "by sheer pluck."

His Masterman Ready, or the Wreck of the Pacific , first published in three volumes in 1841-42, is a desert island story in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson . It was ten years later before a second edition was called for, but many more followed. The reprint shown here, from Frederick Warne's Prize Library series in 1891, is open at a typical publisher's catalogue of the period, listing title after title suitable for gifts and school (or Sunday School) prizes. R. M. Ballantyne and boys' adventure stories R. M. Ballantyne (1825-1894), the son of an Edinburgh printer who was apprenticed to the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada as a teenager, created boys' adventure stories that both instilled the values of manly independence and conveyed (from the author's personal experience) an extraordinary range of information about exciting, dangerous new career opportunities. His best-known work Coral Island is shown in an earlier case. Displayed here are a reprint of Ballantyne's first book
