William Sydney Porter (O. Henry)
O. Henry was the pen-name of William Sydney Porter (1862-1910) one of the most famous short-story writers. His life was a tragic one because he was sentenced to five years in prison accused of fraudulent appropriation of funds at the bank where he worked as a cashier. In spite of this, life gave him a profound knowledge of human character, especially of inhabitants in big cities who are unfortunate in life. As a story-teller, he is remarkable for his ingenuity in the use of ironical coincidences, for his skilful plots and because he was particularly clever at writing stories with an unexpected ending. Relationship to me: Cousin
PORTER family ODT Contents: a/k/a: HENRY, O. He led quite an exciting life until a prison term caused him to turn to writing to pass the time of his sentence. There he found his unique talent for writing short stories, of which he sold about a dozen to various magazines prior to his release in 1901. Settling on the pseudonym "O. Henry", he contributed at least one story a week to a number of magazines, until his death ten years later, when his hard drinking caught up with him and ruined his liver. O. Henry and Mark Twain are arguably the quintessential American writers.

O. Henry (1862-1910) was born William Sydney Porter in Greensboro, North Carolina. After rudimentary schooling he worked in a drugstore; then at the age of fourteen he moved to Texas, where he took a series of jobs over the next twenty years as a rancher, a bank teller, and the editor of a humorous weekly magazine called the Rolling Stone In 1896 he fled to Honduras after being indicted for alleged embezzlement of funds from the bank that had employed him. William Sydney Porter
Short Story Writer
Greensboro, North Carolina
The most popular short story writer of his era, William Sydney Porter was born on Polecat Creek in Guilford County, and raised and educated in Greensboro by an unmarried aunt who ran a private school. Young William Sydney Porter worked in an uncle's drug store until he moved at nineteen to Texas where he held a variety of jobs including paying and receiving teller at the First National Bank of Austin. To supplement his income, he wrote free-lance sketches, and was briefly editor and co-owner of a humorous weekly called The Rolling Stone . While he was working as a columnist for the Houston Daily Post , Porter was indicted for the embezzlement of bank funds during his time as a teller. His trial was delayed for two years first by his escape to New Orleans and Honduras, then by his wife's illness and death. Although it is not known for certain whether Porter was an embezzler or merely an incompetent bookkeeper, he was sentenced to five years in the Ohio Penitentiary. His jobs as the prison's night druggist and as secretary to the steward allowed him time to write, and he published his first short story from prison under a pen name. He used several pseudonyms, but upon his early release for good behavior, he chose to write as O. Henry. Porter moved to New York City in 1902, ostensibly to obtain material, although for the next few years his work continued to reflect his experiences in the southwest and Central America. All but 16 of the 115 stories he wrote in 1904 and 1905 dealt with New York, and on the publication of his second book

It was here that Mabel Wagnalls Jones was witness to an event of considerable significance to historians of America's literary community the funeral of O Henry. According to her account (published in 'Letters To Lithopolis,' a book of correspondences from the great American short story writer to Wagnalls Jones, an account which became the subject of a vitriolic but shortlived literary exchange in the New York Times) O Henry's death and funeral was a rather odd and O Henry-like affair.

O. Henry (1862-1910) was originally born William Sydney Porter in Greensboro, North Carolina. As a young man, he moved to Austin, Texas where he worked as a bank teller . He moved again to Houston, Texas in 1895 and became a newspaper columnist In 1896, however, he was called back to Austin, where he was charged with embezzling money from the bank where he had worked. Not wanting to go to prison for his crime, O. Henry fled to Honduras, and stayed there for six months before returning to the United States. Upon his return, the court tried him and put him in an Ohio prison for three years. While in prison, he began writing short stories and it is there that he took the pen-name O. Henry for his writings. After his release from prison in 1901, he moved to New York, which is the setting for many of his stories. He is the author of over 250 stories and is most famous for his use of surprise or 'twist' endings. Notice the twists and surprises in the endings to "The Last Leaf", "The Green Door", and perhaps his most famous story, "The Gift of the Magi". The Green Door The Last Leaf The Gift of the Magi map of ELLSA Vocab Checkpoint originally adverb Originally means at the beginning of something, in this case, at the beginning of O. Henry's life.
