Lieutenant (jg), United States Navy
Sunday, July 30, 2000
Bullet ends life of young Navy officer Scott Kinkele - a young Naval officer who had just earned his gold navigator's wings - was killed last week by a bullet shot through his car window by someone authorities said he probably didn't know. Kinkele, a lieutenant junior grade, was driving back Thursday (July 27) night to the Naval Air Station on Whidbey Island, where he was assigned temporarily, after a day of hiking at Mount Rainier with a family friend. He stopped for gas at a service station on Highway 20 near LaConner, Skagit County, around midnight and continued west toward the island. Just a few minutes later, police were called to investigate an apparent accident a mile down the road. Instead, they found Kinkele dead. He had been shot in the back of the head, through the rear window, and had died immediately, crossing the median and swerving across the nearly empty oncoming lanes. No arrests have been made, but detectives with the Skagit County Sheriff's Department said they are searching for two dark-colored vehicles - a late '70's 4x4 Ford pickup and a late-model Pontiac Trans Am - that were reported to be in the westbound lanes when the shooting occurred. Kinkele, who was bound for Spain after he finished a six-month training course in electronics at the Naval Air Station, was the youngest graduate in his 1998 class at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

The 1887 Conner Fight on the Sabine
By Paul N. Spellman
Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum

One of the crouching figures stood up, his shotgun pointed at the Ranger line. The movement attracted the attention of every man standing around the creek bed.
Then all hell broke loose.
But hunting down all the Conners in the thick East Texas Sabine bottomland was like catching a certain rabbit in the briar patch. The two brothers and their rescuers simply vanished from sight.
Capt. John Brooks Scott enlisted the help of locals upon his arrival on the Sabine, including Judge James Polly, Judge William W. Weatherred, Henry Harris, John Toole, Milton Anthony, and Redden Alford. These men seemed to know the lay of the land as well as the dangerous Conners.
On the morning of March 25, Scott divided his forces. He sent Crowder, Harvey, Fenton, and Caldwell with the locals on one patrol while he commanded the remaining Rangers.

31. Wilde Primes
Scott Scott Hemphill Hemphill@alumni.caltech.edu This isn t flying. Buzz Lightyear From Scott Hemphill Hemphill@Hemphills.net Sent 29 May 2004

Wilde Primes
Wilde Primes
A Wilde prime consists of any number as a stem, and then 1's are appended until the number is prime. For example, 16 becomes 161, which is composite, so it becomes 1611, which is also composite, and then 16111, which is prime, hence 16 is a Wilde prime. If the stem is prime itself, then we do not bother, as 1's suffice. This does disguise some anomolies, for example examine n=37. Are all numbers Wilde Primes? The answer is no. 176 is conjectured to be the lowest [Jack Brennen]. This is because 176 has a covering set of 11,3,13 and 7, which means that every Wilde extension to 176 is divisible by at least one of these primes. Proof 176=11*16. Adding an even number of 1's results in a number divisible by 11. 176 is 2mod3. So adding 1mod6 1's results in a number divisible by 3. 176111 is divisible by 13, as is 111111, so this covers 3mod6 1's. 17611111 is divisible by 7, as is 111111, so this covers 5mod6 1's, and the proof is complete. Are there an infinite number of non-Wilde primes? Don't know. Probably.

In fact, NeuStar will allow one .US application per serial number "per registrar". So to optimize one's chances of obtaining a desired .US domain during Sunrise, a mark owner should file applications based on each Serial Number that qualifies (i.e., application date prior to July 27, 2001), and file them with multiple registrars. Since the registry isn't charging an application fee (after the .biz problem), you shouldn't have to pay any up front application fees. Not just anybody can peer through a 16-inch telescope and make fabulous pictures of colorful nebula, galaxies and other deep-space objects. Well, actually, almost anyone can.
Teenager Scott Hemphill helped produce this image of a star cluster called M3. About The Images Many of the images in this gallery include objects identified with an "M" classification. This denotes a catalogue developed by Charles Messier in the 1700s. NGC numbers represent another catalogue, developed later, called the New General Catalogue of Clusters and Nebulae Science Tuesday Visit SPACE.com to explore a new science feature each Tuesday. A program at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona allows total amateurs to spend a night at the telescope, with a professional astronomer as a guide, and peruse objects of his or her choosing. The lead guide, Adam Block, and other staff help visitors create professional images of their favorite targets. The 5-year-old program has built up a wide-ranging photo album loaded with space images you would not suspect were produced, in part, by people who were taking their first serious look at the night sky.

VERN BLISS BECOMES FOURTH DIFFERENT LES LATE MODEL WINNER OF 2005 By Dave Buchanan Four weeks of racing are now in at Lake Erie Speedway and each week there has been a different face in victory lane for the Plyler Overhead Door Late Models. Vern Bliss of Arcade, NY becomes the most recent winner after holding off Glenn Gault Jr. for more than half of the 40-lap race. Bliss started third in the 23-car field behind pole sitter Ron Burkholder. On the opening lap Burkholder and Bliss would jump out in front of Nick Crassi to take the top two spots before a pair of quick cautions on lap one would slow the race down. One of the cautions involved points leader, Jay Sommers, who was involved in a multi-car spin in turn three forcing him to go to the rear. Once racing finally resumed, Bliss challenged Burkholder hard for the lead. Going into the race it had been a up and down year for the former NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series regional champion with a second place finish coupled with a pair of runs with disappointing mechanical failures while racing up front. Looking for some redemption, Bliss would take the lead on lap 10 during the race’s longest stretch of green flag laps. Glenn Gault Jr. would come through the field to challenge Bliss after starting ninth. The long green flag run would spread the field out around the 3/8

To date, every World War II tank simulation published, just plain stunk. I'm certain I'm not making a sweeping, unfair generalization here, seeing that there have only been three major ones so far. The first two were Microprose's Across The Rhine , which was a disaster, and , a Sherman simulation, which also received the short end of the praise stick. When these two games were released, the problem was that computers didn't have the processing power to create the varied terrain (hedgerows, trees, and buildings) needed in a good tank simulation. Then came i-Magic's

I computed the digits of pi using Borwein's method. I used a divide-
and-conquer multiply routine, hand coded in 68020 assembly language
It was capable of multiplying two 1.25+ million digit numbers in about 20 minutes on an HP 9000/370 (a 25MHz 68030?). The computation took a little over three days, at which point I had the answer in *binary*. :-( The binary to decimal conversion was no simple task. I checked my results by performing the same calculation to 2.5+ million digit precision, (9 days) and compared the binaries. The only independent check has come from David Bailey, whose results agree with mine to at least
