By Bernhard Witkop
Deep in the intricate country of the mind
I took a twisting path that led me stumbling
To a wind-racked hill.
Those thickets, briary, tough to break
And swampy sometimes underfoot
Were well behind me now
Lost to sight and for the moment
Lost to mind. The hill I had reached was high enough To look on distances that dropped away fold upon fold Melting far to the Westward into a dim horizon They beckoned me. And my feet, so heavy as I had begun to climb the hill Were now uplifted to lighter pace, What land is this, I asked, in taking breath, What lies behind that seventh fold? Take heart, I told myself, Go farther on. Donald Adams The Seventh Fold WHENEVER PERCY JULIAN TOLD his friends about his life, and how he had overcome all the obstacles from his beginning as the grandson of a slave, born "at the corner of Jeff Davis Avenue and South Oak Street in Montgomery, Alabama, the Capital in the cradle of the confederacy," to scientist, inventor, business leader, humanist, protagonist of human rights, he liked to illustrate this long arduous climb by Donald Adams'

A Biography of Jim Fraiser
by Anna Elizabeth Hillman ( SHS) Mississippi is known as home to many of the South's most well known and respected authors. It provides a unique cultural setting for many writers. Jim Fraiser grew up in the Magnolia State which remains his home. Though he has been writing now for many years, he has only just begun his career as a Mississippi writer (Ole Miss 2).
Jim Fraiser grew up in the Mississippi Delta in a small town called Greenwood . He was born on October 27, 1954 . His name, John James Fraiser, III, was given to him after being passed down through the generations. In 1972, he graduated from Greenwood High School with plans of attending the University of Mississippi. While at Ole Miss, he received a Bachelor of Arts in English as well as history in 1976. Then in 1979 he received his law degree from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss 2).
From there, Fraiser acquired his first job in the legal profession as the assistant district attorney under Ed Peters for Hinds County (Criss 10). In 1983, Fraiser began his own private practice which he had until 1995 when he became the special assistant attorney general in the Civil Litigation Division. This is a position he still holds today. Between this stretch of time, Fraiser had many other occupations. In 1988 he practiced his writing techniques as a columnist for

Summertime, and the reading is easy....
by Seth Rogovoy WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., June 29, 1996 Summer's here, and the time is right for dancin' in the streets, according to the old Motown hit. But as far as magazines are concerned, the time is right for reading fiction. Something about being on vacation or lying in the sun at the beach, apparently, is supposed to make readers yearn for short stories, perhaps more than they do ordinarily. Whatever. We'll take what we can get.
Granta
The summer issue of the English quarterly Granta boldly heralds "The Best of Young American Novelists" on its cover. Inside, the literary journal presents works by 20 writers under 40, chosen in an elaborate, four-step process that winnowed over 200 contenders down to 52 nominees, before a four-judge panel selected the final 20. The whole process has been the object of some controversy, which editor Ian Jack alludes to in an introduction. The magazine has been accused of grossly overlooking some obvious choices, such as Donna Tartt, William T. Vollmann, Bret Easton Ellis and David Foster Wallace, none of whom were even nominated. It has been criticized for bending over backwards to select a multi-colored crew of authors for the sake of political correctness, and attacked for not naming enough authors of color. It has been lambasted for using the contest more to hype the magazine than to honor the writers, and condemned for the basic notion of pitting writers against writers in a spurious competition.
