Beginnings
Growth Excellence O AK P ARK continued to grow as the vacant land was built upon with homes, churches, businesses and schools. Oak Park became widely know as the World's Largest Village. As a mature community, Oak Park struggled to remain vibrant. As part of its efforts, Oak Park embraced its rich heritage and noted legacy of Wright, Hemingway, and others. But post-war America was not to be so simple. Percy Lavon Julian was born on April 11, 1899 in Montgomery, Alabama. He received the A.B. degree from DePauw University in 1920 (where the Percy L. Julian Science and Mathematics Center in named in his honor) and the Ph.D. degree from University of Vienna in 1931. Percy Julian's life in research often made use of soybean products and led to discoveries in the manufacture of drugs, hormones, vitamins, amino acids, paint and paper. Percy Julian's research yielded over 100 patents. The DePauw citation says it best: "Revered Scholar, Teacher, Research Chemist, Mentor, Business and Civic Leader, and Humanitarian"

In reading great literature I become a thousand men and
yet remain myself. Like the night sky in the Greek poem,
I see with a myriad eyes, but it is still I who see.
Here, as in worship, in love, in moral action, and in knowing,
I transcend myself; and am never more myself than when I do.
C. S. Lewis, An Experiment in Criticism Great literature, of which C. S. Lewis speaks, is the gateway to that vast range of human experience which can be expressed and can be shared with a countless multitude, only by means of verbal language transfigured by the moral imagination.
At the beginning of the English curriculum, the student acquires the skills required for composition and critical reading through a comprehensive study of traditional rhetorical and literary forms in the context of analyzing and appreciating major works of imaginative literature. These skills are learned not only through an understanding of literary terminology, but also from close readings of classic texts. The Literature Department does not employ large anthologies, in which small fragments of texts are quickly scanned; students are expected to read and master complete works.

other. This session is devoted to a discussion of the complicated relationship between Faulkner and Hemingway as contemporaries, and their subsequent cultural and critical trajectories as American writers. The session welcomes a variety of approaches and premises for comparing the two figures, focussed primarily on the complex relationship between personal and literary reputation. Papers should offer a reasonable balance of biographical and textual analysis. Suggested subjects: the correspondence between the two men and their intermediaries; their critical estimations of each other and the degree to which these estimations reveal more about the estimator than the estimated; their inadvertent collaboration on To Have and Have Not

Essay 2: Assignment , sample green essay red and blue samples.
The assignment
Write an interesting, tightly-built, well-proven argument about Susan Douglas’s "Narcissism as Liberation". You will be proving a thesis about the Douglas essay, but bring in the Percy essay as contrasting evidence.
Choose from one of the following approaches:
-Defend the essay. Prove that what seems like weakness or self-contradiction is actually a surprising or subtle strength of "Narcissism as Liberation". Hone in on any of the topics listed above ("narcissism," ad technique, sisterhood), or come up with another topic that has particular power to sway someone who might have doubts about Douglas’s message. Make sure to include in your defense at least one specific contrast to a passage in the Percy essay.
Sample Essay Susan Douglas is a writer who is outside the confinements of formality, dignity, and even absolute credibility. Walker Percy seems entirely dependent on all these things. At first it would appear that these writers have nothing in common, this is not true, these essays are much more alike than actually apparent. Their differences, while strong, are matched equally by several general characteristics that cross between each piece of writing, and even a common thread between their topics.

FOUR DECADES OF LIBRARY SUPPORT
From the Modern Literature Collection
LITERATURE
Special Collections's holdings in American, British, and Irish literature constitute one of the most important collections of its kind in the world. Although they include numerous works from earlier centuries, Special Collections's literature holdings are especially strong from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries. The collection encompasses a wide range of genres and formats and includes first and variant editions, manuscript and archival collections, broadsides, visual materials, ephemera, and sound recordings. Eighteenth and nineteenth century holdings include first or early editions of the works of virtually every important American, British, and Irish literary figure from the period. Of particular note are holdings of the work of the British romantic poets, notably Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and their circle, and nineteenth-century American fiction, including comprehensive collections for such authors as Nathaniel Hawthorne, James Fenimore Cooper, Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and a host of others. The University of Delaware Library's holdings in twentieth-century literature are internationally-renowned and are consulted daily by students and scholars from throughout the world. Printed holdings include strong collections of the work of a wide range of twentieth-century authors, runs of little magazines, and the publications of small and independent literary presses. Of particular interest are the Library's holdings in twentieth-century poetry and in contemporary Irish literature. Two other collections of significance include the Frank W. Tober Collection, a central component of which is an extensive collection on literary forgery; and the library of Waldo Frank, which includes more than four hundred volumes from this important American author, including inscribed presentation copies of works by many of the most celebrated authors of the twentieth century.

Salt, as all dedicated foodies know, is riding the crest of a wave of culinary chic. Recently we tasted a French fleur de sel , “a premium first harvest sea salt from Brittany” made by M. Gilles Hervy, an “ artisan paludier du pays Guerandais .” According to Corti Brothers, the Sacramento grocer from whom we obtained this salt, a recent hurricane nearly destroyed the salt operations on the Guerande Peninsula and the Hervys are one of the few remaining families of paludiers , or salt-marsh workers, who continue to harvest sea salt in the traditional manner. It is an ancient, time-consuming process in which sea water is captured in reservoirs at high tide and then directed into a maze of channels ending in shallow pools. Along the way, the water slowly evaporates and at the end, the salt crust that remains is raked into piles of grey sea salt, in itself a superb seasoning full of trace minerals that give it a wonderful flavor. As Patricia Wells explains in The Paris Cookbook , the finest, whitest crystals appear at the rim of the ponds only when a dry wind blows from the east; these fluffy crystals are skimmed and left to dry in wicker baskets. About My Mommy : Stevi Foxx I decided to make my mother a webpage because she is one of the most interesting people I know. Stevi Foxx is the pseudonym she uses for writing, Foxx being her maiden name. Stevi is just a name she likes. This page has camouflage accents because she says camouflage is her 'favorite colour'. If you point out that camouflage is a pattern and not a colour, she says neon green is her favorite colour. She drives a station wagon painted camouflage with neon green 'trimmings' (windshield wiper arms, license plate frame, etc.). You know when you go out in public with her, there is a very good chance she will get you in trouble. At theatres she talks to the screen and throws JuJu's over her shoulder so the people behind her think someone behind them is throwing them.
