Name: Heinrich Heine Birth Date: December 13, 1797 Death Date: February 17, 1856 Place of Birth: Place of Death: Paris, France Nationality: German Gender: Male Occupations: author Heinrich Heine Main Biography The German author Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) is best known for his lyric poems, a number of which are considered among the best in German literature. His essays on German literary, political, and philosophical thought contain remarkable and frequently prophetic insights. The career of Heinrich Heine spans the later years of the German romantic movement and the era of the socially and politically conscious literary movement called Young Germany. His work reflects the influence of both schools, but an ingrained satirical sense and a sharp wit prevent his complete subscription to the tenets of either. He hoped to secularize romanticism in a "new (pagan) Hellenism," but his liberal political philosophy rejected contemporary reactionary German regimes as well as revolutionary "mob rule." His self-imposed exile from Germany after 1831 demonstrates his independence and isolation in a lifelong search for personal and national identity.

Heinrich Heine

Heinrich Heine
Leben Heinrich Heine wurde am 13. Dezember 1797 in Düsseldorf geboren. Februar 1756 in Paris.

His father a tradesman, during the French occupation found new prospects opening up for Jews, but when his business failed he sent Heinrich to Hamburg where his Uncle Salomon a rich banker tried to encourage him without success into a commercial career. Heine studied at Bonn, Berlin and Göttingen universities, but his calling was for literature rather than law, although he did eventually take a degree in 1825.
Heine, like his teacher G.W.F. Hegel, Berlin university was passionate about Napoleon, so much so that he converted to Protestantism to make it possible for a civil service career which at that time was closed to Jews. He also changed his first name Harry to the Germanic Heinrich, although he never held a position in government service.
